"Halloween was made for carefree Mercy Watson." — School Library Journal

When the Watsons decide to zip their porcine wonder into a formfitting princess dress for Halloween — complete with tiara — they are certain that Mercy will be beautiful beyond compare. Mercy is equally certain she likes the sound of trick-or-
treating and can picture piles of buttered toast already. As for the Lincoln Sisters next door, how could they know that their cat would lead them all on a Halloween "parade" of hysterical proportions? Kate DiCamillo’s beguiling pig is back in a tale full of treats, tricky turns, hijinks, and high humor.

Read the adorable series by America's beloved storyteller Kate DiCamillo! The instant New York Times bestseller! In a delightful origin story for the star of the Mercy Watson series, a tiny piglet brings love (and chaos) to Deckawoo Drive — and the Watsons’ lives will never be the same. To Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig — she's a porcine wonder. And to Mercy, the Watsons are an excellent source of buttered toast, not to mention that buttery-toasty feeling she gets when she snuggles into bed with them. One day the Watsons' car ride takes an unexpected turn when their elderly neighbor Baby Lincoln pops up in the backseat in hopes of some "folly and adventure" — and in the chaos that ensues, an exuberant Mercy ends up behind the wheel! Leroy Ninker is a small man with a big dream: he wants to be a cowboy, but for now he's just a thief. In fact, Leroy is robbing the Watsons' kitchen right this minute! Little does he know that Mercy is stirring from sleep. When the Watsons decide to zip their porcine wonder into a formfitting princess dress for Halloween — complete with tiara — they are certain that Mercy will be beautiful beyond compare. Return for a tale full of treats, tricky turns, and high humor.

Mercy's appetite has got her into trouble again. When Eugenia Lincoln's pansies go missing, Animal Control Officer Francine Poulet arrives on the scene. But as she soon discovers, not just anyone can think like a pig - especially Mercy Watson! Some may find it wonky to take a pig to the drive-in. But not the Watsons, who think the movie’s title, When Pigs Fly, is inspirational. And not Mercy, who is inspired by the theater’s Bottomless Buckets of popcorn. Tune in for the latest adventure! When Stella gets the idea to go caroling, she has a little trouble getting someone to join her. Will Stella need to sing by herself, or does the evening hold a miracle Stella hadn’t expected? Perfect for read aloud, and a Mercy ornament is included! Read the first book in Kate DiCamillo's new warm and funny early-reader trilogy about Orris the kind rat and Timble the naive owl — and the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Ideal for Mercy and Deckawoo fans!

Editorial Reviews

Review

As always, the Watsons' enthusiasm for their porcine marvel is both hysterical and heartwarming. There is something reassuring about the way they regard Mercy: She is beautiful. She is wonderful. She is adored. Which actually sums up the way I feel about Kate DiCamillo’s series.

Kate DiCamillo’s writing journey has been a truly remarkable one. She grew up in Florida and moved to Minnesota in her twenties, when homesickness and a bitter winter led her to write Because of Winn-Dixie — her first published novel, which became a runaway bestseller and snapped up a Newbery Honor. The Tiger Rising, her second novel, was also set in Florida and went on to become a National Book Award finalist. Since then, the best-selling author has explored settings as varied as a medieval castle and a magician’s theater while continuing to enjoy great success, winning two Newbery Medals and being named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. She now has over 40 million books in print worldwide.

We love the Mercy Watson books! I read a few chapters a night to my 7 year old. These books hold his attention, and they are a nice transition between pictures books and longer chapter books.

I bought this for my first grader and she absolutely loves it. The illustrations are colorful. The story is fun. The reading level is a little above her for reading alone, but it was perfect for her to read a page here and there and for me to read the rest. The book is divided into chapters - which isn't necessary but it makes a first grader feel sophisticated because she's reading a "chapter book." That said, it's a longer book than most of the books she reads, but the story moves along and keeps her engaged.

My kids have LOVED Mercy Watson since we discovered her several years ago - now my daughter is seven and STILL loves them - the illustrations are beautiful and plentiful, the story never stops making them laugh, and I love that they are hard-covered for the durability. I would recommend ALL of the Mercy Watson books to everyone (and I frequently do). These are the chapter books that got my daughter into really reading on her own when she was in kindergarten, and they are the best 'begining' chapter books I have ever found - simple and colorful enough to read to a 2-3 year old, and still favorites of my 7 year old (who will read several of them in a sitting)... really, truly, fantastic books!

My four year old loves these stories. Mercy Watson is a hilarious character - with or without her homemade princess dress. I love Eugenia Lincoln and my son loves Baby Lincoln. We got into these books since Chris Van Dusen is the illustrator. His pictures add genius to all of the Mercy Watson characters. Every child will love this 'porcine wonder' series. We started with the first three and he wanted more. My son is four but this book is definitely appropriate for older children as well. The books are a bit long for kids under 4. I would highly recommend the Mercy Watson books!!

We love every one of the Mercy Watson books. The only negative, she didn't write more. Mercy Watson and the neighbors on Deckawoo Drive are so fun to read. I love the humor and the wit of Kate's writing. I don't mind reading these books over and over and over and over again. How often can a parent say that?
Your children will love the adventures of Mercy Watson as she explores her neighborhood and eats toast with a great deal of butter on it.

Favorite of the series. Cute book with plenty of repetitive wording making it fun for children. Great introduction to chapter books. 4 year old granddaughter loves these, this one in particular being her favorite of the series as well.

Mercy Watson books are my favorite books for this age group. It's an easier chapter book - great for kindergarten or first grade, but my second grader enjoys them as well. They're great for boys or girls, and they're funny and entertaining. The illustrations are great. The book itself feels very well-made, with quality paper and binding. We will definitely keep buying the books in this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series and Worth Every Penny
Reviewed in Germany on June 17, 2017
The entire Mercy Watson series is either a great introduction to chapter books for parents to read to 3 to 5 year olds or is a great book for children, who are at the early stages of reading (end of the first grade to beginning of second grade), to read by themselves. What I liked about this series was: 1. the story is a good, wholesome story and unlike many first readers does not give the impression of being a first reader, 2. the illustrastions are awesome and really help that first time reader understand what he or she is reading and 3. the paper used is durable and very good quality for little hands getting used to turning the pages of a paper book.
