I thought this album is a lot darker than "Black Widow" but I think that's a really good idea for a band like In This Moment. But I love the songs they did "Oh Lord". Yet this album is darker but "Oh Lord" is a darker spiritual song to get into. I love the song "Black Wedding" Featuring Rob Halford from "Judas Priest" because it reminds me of "White Wedding" from Billy Idol but a darker song. "In The Air Tonight" was brilliant to redo a "Phil Collins" song in a darker album like this. I thought this album was darker but I enjoy every song they did. I recommend it to if you love to ROCK!!!.

Being a long time In This Moment fan, I pre-ordered this album off of the strength of "Oh Lord" and "Roots". The next song to release was "In The Air Tonight" (a Phil Collins cover). Then they announced Rob Halford (of Judas Priest) doing a duet on "Black Wedding" as some sort of take on Billy Idol's "White Wedding". I was starting to worry that this was going to be a very strange cover album. Turns out those fears were completely unfounded.

This album is deep, heavy, and powerful. Some will lament the catchier hooks on some songs and reduction in Maria's screaming compared to previous albums, but the trade off is absolutely worth it. We get a fantastically dark soundscape painted though the instrumentation's heavy drive and the overall theme (witchcraft, trials of faith, re-birth). And Maria's performance is fantastic throughout.

Sure, the songs on this album sound relatively clean, catchy and "radio-friendly", but no less amazing than what one would expect following 'Blood' and 'Black Widow'. This band continues to be genuine and talent driven. There's nothing here that was lazily composed for sales and popularity. The lyrics are absolutely top notch. The music ranges from various types of rock to dramatic, heavy moments, all compiled to perfectly compliment each other. While I love Maria's screams, this album demonstrates how much we've been missing from other albums that lack her singing.

In very few ways this is album is different than what we'd expect from ITM, but this isn't a criticism. Most of the components that make this band incredible are further evolved and enhanced on 'Ritual'. In conclusion, it's a great album.

Great album and following with ITM's constant evolution (as Maria Brink states). Some people might be complaining that this album (and their last one Black Widow) aren't as hard as their earlier stuff, and they are right. However, Ritual keeps inline with the bands direction of evolving and maturing their musical style instead of constantly making music that sounds the same (looking at you Bullet for my Valentine). In my opinion, the style and songs are consistent with the theme of the album, which is the Salem Witch Trials. It has an earthy, rhythmic drums, somewhat classic country feel while still being metal and having Maria's amazing vocal range to make it familiar. Some fans will like it, others won't, but this fan thinks Ritual is a must have for your collection.

'Ritual is the culmination of 'Blood' and 'Black Widow'. While 'Ritual' may not be better than 'Blood' in my opinion, it is superior to 'Black Widow' in consistency and embracing the sound they set out towards.

With 'Black Widow' there was about 4 or 5 songs, mostly in the opening of the album, that were shredding and brutal. However, more than half was dragged down by overtly dark and slow songs, where Maria spent too much time whispering spoken word vocals for entire songs, instead of actually singing. 'Black Widows' strong songs were fantastic, but as a whole, I felt the album lacked consistency, pacing and energy. They were in the growing process I believe, torn between 'Blood' and where they wanted to go next.

'Ritual' has embraced their 'Hell Pop' sound to the fullest yet. The album is dominated by electronics tones, from the guitars, bass, drums and even Maria's vocals, they all have twinges of electronics applied to them. The songs vary in sound and pace, going from the very bluesy 'Oh Lord' to the poppy up beat 'Joan of Arc', ballad 'No Me Importa' and Bloodesque 'Roots', 'Ritual' is a colorful and fun romp through a mixture of sounds. Surprisingly In This Moment do it all very well, most enjoyably, Maria is singing through it all with emotion and variety, very rarely going back to the spoken word sound.

'Ritual' also has plenty of guitar, bass and drum work, but is used to add texture to the songs. You can hear the heavy chug of Chris and Randy's guitars and the well implemented bass lines of Travis throughout. Kent, the new drummer, has some good work as well. All the band members can be heard, but unlike the usual rock or metal band, their parts are woven in to make up the whole song, instead of being driven specifically by one instrument. It's all pretty well done, but I wish there was a guitar solo or two on the album.

A few cool notes is their cover of Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight", transforming the song to fit In This Moment perfectly with a great build up. 'Black Wedding' features guest vocals from Rob Halford of Judas Priest and had writing contributions by Billy Idol himself.

In This Moment has completed their transformation. If you've enjoyed 'Blood' and 'Black Widow', you'll most likely enjoy 'Ritual'. Definitely check it out.

I would also like to say the packaging is pretty cool and the booklet has neat and interesting pictures in it.

Favorite songs - 'Black Wedding' 'Joan of Arc' 'River of Fire' 'Half God Half Devil' 'No Me Importa' 'Roots'(All of which happen to be the more guitar heavy driven songs).

This is a really excellent album. After several albums of basically show tunes, which by the way I liked quite well, they went back to putting out some serious quality music. The instrumental music is great & Maria's lyrics& her vocal presentation couldn't be much better. What a voice! The whole album is good, but "Black Wedding". the cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" & "Roots" really stand out. I hope the new album, coming out in 2020 is as good.
