From the manufacturer
Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker Distortion/Sustainer
The Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker taps into the sonic power of the legendary Big Muff Pi, but creates new tonal possibilities at the flick of a switch -- or two. Use the Wicker switch to open up three high-frequency filters for raspy, sustaining distortion with top-end bite, or flick on the Tone switch to bypass the tone control for unabated tonal slam. Want the original Big Muff sound? Just switch off the Wicker and turn on the Tone. The ability to create your own personal Big Muff sound is what truly makes this the Wicked Wicker.

Volume knobThe volume knob sets the overall output level of the effect. |
Tone knobThe Tone knob allows the musician to dial in just the right setting between deep bass and high treble. |
Sustain knobAs in the original Big Muff Pi, adjusts the amount of sustain and distortion. |
Tone & wicker switchesTone Switch - The Tone switch allows the user to activate the Tone knob or to completely bypass the tone circuitry. When the Tone switch is set to ON, the Tone knob is active, just like a standard Big Muff. When the Tone switch is set to OFF, the Tone knob and all of its circuitry is bypassed. This setting yields a totally new Muff distortion with a powerful drive and uncolored gain. High output with attitude. Please Note: When the Tone switch is set to OFF, turning the Tone knob will produce no change to your sound. In addition, it is normal for the output volume of your Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker to increase when moving the Tone switch from ON to OFF. Status LED - When the LED is lit; the BMPTW effect is active. When the LED is off, the BMPTW is in True Bypass mode. The Footswitch toggles between effect and bypass modes. Wicker Switch - Activate Wicker mode by flipping the Wicker switch up to the ON position where the high frequency bandwidth is opened up for a bright and clear top end. Set the Wicker switch to OFF to obtain the classic Big Muff Pi sound. |

I play through a Peavy Classic 30 using a PRS Semi Hollow, Fender Strat(single coils), and Fender Jaguar with P90's. This pedal responds and colors the unique tone of each of my guitars. I just can't say enough good things about it! I am especially fond of decreasing the tone knob on the guitar and the tone knob on the pedal. It gives a smooth but powerful growl sound. Very QOTSA like.
This was the added texture that I needed for my pedal board.
P.S. If you're into The White Stripes, Electric Wizard, Sleep or other fuzzed-out rock groups, this thing can get you there, even with a small 15w practice amp.
I really like the construction - all of them feel very durable and they feel like they will last a long time.
For this pedal, I'm still working to find the "right" tone for me. This is my first "fuzz-type" pedal so I understand that it will be a little more "muddy" than other distortion pedals....with that in mind, I'm working to find a tone I like. It's been a challenge (albeit a fun one - HA!). I find that either there is too much "mud" or the sound is just not "punchy" enough....again, this is my first foray into EHx pedals and the Big Muff and I am still learing about how they work and sound. I've recently paired it up with a Boss Overdrive pedal and am getting some interesting sounds now - so maybe it's just a matter of blending the Muff with other pedals to get what I'm looking for :)
The one thing I don't like about the EHx pedals are their very noisy switches. They all make a very loud "CLICK" when they are engaged. I wish it could be an option to get a "silent" switch. Like I said, I've typically used Boss pedals and they can be engaged/disengaged in a silent fashion which is great. It would be difficult to engage these pedals quietly.
Overall I would recommend - heavy duty construction, great sound.
the only reason i was hesitant to buy a muff in the first place was that i think the standard muff tone can be a little muddy and on the bassy side of the tonal palate. i was borrowing my roomates russian version (the big camo green one), and basically had the tone turned all the way treble. it was too "full" for my taste; playing thru single coils, and switching to distorted sound, there was still a tonal "shift" to the bass end of the spectrum, even with the tone dialed to the treble. (like when you turn the volume down on your guitar and lose some of your high-end response - the tone circuitry in most muffs i've played through muffle your tone in a similar respect).
with the tone wicker, you can add extra top-end boost. my favorite, tho, is the tone switch - you can bypass ALL of the tone circuitry. this leaves a full spectrum coming thru the pedal, and almost allows for a more "transparent" fuzz (if a fuzz could ever be called transparent). now i switch to my fuzzy, distorted sound and my overall tone is fuzzed - WITHOUT any tonal spectrum shift!
i compared this side-by-side with the russian version, and in standard muff mode, it's pretty similar, not a difference i'd be able to pick out unless they were side by side. but it is NOT as full. so if you want a full-sounding muff, this might not be the muff for you (from what i've heard, the tone-wicker is based on the NYC reissue).
