From the company that has been developing robust, dedicated wearable technology to improve training metrics for athletes for more than a decade comes the GPS smartwatch for the active lifestyle. Introducing vívoactive — the ultra-thin, lightweight smartwatch with built-in Garmin sports apps that you can wear every day to help you keep a healthy balance between work and life.

    From Work to Workout

Play harder, work smarter, live better with vívoactive. Built-in sports apps keep you active while smart notifications allow you to stay in contact with pressing work matters — all so you can keep your life in balance. The high-resolution, color touchscreen stays readable in direct sunlight, so you can view your stats when you step out of the office for a run. The ultra-thin profile — 8 mm — is comfortable to wear all day and can easily transition from office to golf course. You won’t have to worry about vívoactive keeping up with your active days. The rechargeable battery lasts through all your activities with up to 3 weeks5 in watch/activity-tracking mode or up to 10 hours using GPS.

    Built-in Sports Apps

vívoactive features built-in sports apps that track your stats — even when away from your phone. Simply tap to choose among GPS-enabled running, golfing and cycling apps plus swimming and activity tracking.

    Hit the Ground Running

Whether you’re training for a 5K or just for life in general, the running app uses GPS to capture essential running data such as distance and pace. A built-in accelerometer and wrist-based speed and cadence trackers eliminate the need for a separate foot pod when running on an indoor track or treadmill and also when GPS is unavailable. You can set up vibration alerts for heart rate¹, pace and run/walk intervals. Other training features include Auto Lap and Auto Pause. Automatic sync with Garmin Connect Mobile gives you a post-run summary, including calories burned and if you scored any personal records, such as your fastest or longest run to date.

    Get In Gear

The GPS-enabled cycling app measures time, distance, speed and calories. Compatible with sensors² such as speed, cadence and heart rate monitors to measure your progress on training rides as well as daily commutes.

    Tee Off

Pair with your smartphone³ to download course maps from our golf course database — with more than 38,000 courses worldwide — to play favorite and new courses. The golfing app keeps maps updated and tallies hole number and par. GPS measures layup and dogleg distances, as well as distances to the front, middle and back of the green, to improve usability over the entire hole. Individual stroke play scorecard lets you see if you’re under or over par. Measure shot distance at the press of a button. Round timer counts up time on the course, while the built-in accelerometer tracks your steps.

    Dive In

Auto Length accelerometer-based technology automatically gauges total and interval distance; laps; calories burned; session average, interval and length pace; and stroke count, including number of strokes per length and interval and session averages. Let the swimming app calculate your efficiency with swolf, which adds the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length. View your time and interval distance at a glance. Interval Count lets you seamlessly pause and then resume your workout.

The thin profile cuts through the water, and its 5 ATM water rating means you can swim, sweat and shower with it on, worry-free.

    Step It Up

vívoactive follows your progress even when you’re not engaged in a specific activity. The activity tracking app tracks your steps to learn your current activity level, then assigns an attainable daily step count goal. As you meet your milestones, the device will adjust your goal for the next day. The red move bar appears on the display after 1 hour of inactivity and builds when you’ve been sitting too long. Just walk for a couple of minutes to reset the move bar. Set the sleep mode when you go to bed and vívoactive will monitor your rest. It also tracks your calories burned.

    Stay Connected

vívoactive gently vibrates to alert you to all the same notifications you receive on your compatible Bluetooth-enabled device4. Receive caller ID and missed call information for incoming calls. Text messages include sender information and message. Email messages come with sender and subject. vívoactive also displays notifications from Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, as well as other mobile apps, including weather alerts and temperature. Simply touch and swipe the screen to read more, or clear the screen with the press of a button.

    Advanced Smartwatch Features

vívoactive lets you control the tunes on your music player, locate your phone and let your friends and family track your activities in real time with Live Track. You can also remotely control your VIRB Elite action camera.

    Custom Apps and Watch Faces

Personalize vívoactive with free downloads from our Connect IQ store. You can customize your watch face, add data fields and get apps and widgets that provide information at a glance.

    Challenge Yourself

Stay up to date on your progress for each of the built-in activities with automatic syncs with . You can earn virtual badges for extra motivation, join online challenges and connect, compete and compare with friends and family around the world. View your history and stats right on the smartwatch.

Customers like the ease of use of the wearable computer. They mention that it's pretty easy to use, pairing with their phone was a cinch, and the Connect store is limited but decent for helping to configure the interface. The running features are pretty straightforward, and it integrates quite well with their iPhone via the Garmin Connect app. It's easy to begin your workout on the watch and the GPS works great, and integrates well with the iPhone via a magnetic snap. Customers are also impressed with the tech idiot proof and the fact that it simply snaps itself into place to the rear of the watch.

They love how thin it is and it comes loaded with very useful apps. The app shop also works well, and there are several great apps with Connect IQ. It has built-in apps for indoor and outdoor walking, running, and biking, and you can download golf courses to the app. It connects great to the Garmn app, and transfers data wirelessly. Size/Comfort/Use, Female Runner/Swimmer (4yr+ Use) + Vivosmart Comparison
Update >4 yrs of hard daily use: I am very hard on watches and had expected I’d need to replace this one after a couple of years but it has really exceeded my expectations. To give you an idea of how rugged this watch is, I accidentally washed and dried it yesterday after I got back from the pool and was in a rush. When I saw it in the dryer I was crestfallen thinking it was surely done for, but it had no problems at all!I’ve added swimming to my workout list since my original review and it’s held up in the pool without issue. The small bit that holds the band did eventually break, but a replacement from Amazon was cheap and it was easy to swap out myself. I noticed it wasn’t charging as well as it used to about 6 months ago and used a q-tip to clean the two metal charging points and that’s no longer an issue either.ORIGINAL REVIEWI've had this watch for a little over 6 months and use it as an everyday watch, for some aspects of my job, and for exercise. I'm training for a 10K and a half marathon over the next few months and will update the review to include how it performs on longer distant runs.SIZE & FIT (for a woman, see photo and ignore the judgmental border collie)The size of this watch on is a little larger than I'd like, but as advertised. This makes it hard to fit perfectly without being too tight or sliding around so it's difficult to see the watchface while running. I'm 5'11” but I've always had problems with watches being too large.DIFFERENT LIGHTING CONDITIONSOthers have said they have trouble seeing the watch indoors but for me it's the opposite. In bright light outside it's hard to see, but as I'm outside, I just walk a little and it solves the problem.SETTINGSOnce you figure out how to set the watch for your use, it's pretty easy to use, but I would recommend googling youtube videos to learn. There are lots of watchfaces you can add and other apps to increase function, but once I got the core settings down this became an additional feature I never really use. This has been great for run-walk intervals when just starting running. The watch vibrates to let me know when I'm supposed to transition so I don't have to look down. When I became more concerned with actual performance and not just survival, I can quickly swipe the watch to see stats.BATTERY LIFEI'm not a heavy runner, but having a dog and walking to work makes me relatively active. I track 2-3, 45 minute runs per week as well as a 1-2 casual outings. The GPS function drains the battery quicker than general use/ step counter, but both are good in my book. If I have several heavy use days in a row, I'd need to charge the watch every 3-4 days. My longest distance tracked lasted for about 6 hours while hiking and I still had ~35% of life left from a not-completely charged start. While injured and only using the stepcounter and watch functions, I had to charge the watch every 7 days (not dead yet, but close enough I wanted to recharge). I've not seen a decrease in battery life overtime, though it's never been as long as they claim on the website.RECHARGINGThis is extremely easy. I don't mind not tracking my sleep every night, so when the watch gets down to 20-30% I plug in the charging USB plate and clip my watch in overnight. It charges very quickly, so overnight isn't a requirement it just works best for me. I've taken this on vacation once and charged it while sitting with friends and it was completely charged in less than 2 hours. I travel with the ANKER multiport charging station to make charging multiple devices very easy, so charging while traveling has also not been an issue.WATERPROOFI haven't completely submerged the watch for an extended time (e.g. swimming) but I have done dishes and cleaned in the watch with no issues. After several months of daily wear (while sweating) the inside of the band became dirty. I used an old toothbrush and didn't pay particular attention to getting the rest of the watch wet and all was fine. I walk to work and have been caught in several complete downpours and never had to worry about this watch getting wet, which is also nice if you're caught on a run outside 3+ miles from home.INDOOR USEDuring the winter months in New England I was stuck on a treadmill and used the indoor exercise option for both walking and running and both worked great.SYNCThis is my largest complaint about this watch. You can't manually sync the watch to your phone and it loses the connection much more frequently than it should. I've had to uninstall and reinstall the app twice, and reset the watch an additional time to try and force the sync so my watch would recognize the phone's connection. None of the data is lost, and once the connection is reestablished all the data is uploaded (this isn't the same as losing bluetooth because of distance from your phone).GPS DETECTIONThe watch syncs pretty quickly into GPS mode (which I keep off unless I want to track an activity) allowing for me to start whatever I want to do right away, instead of standing around waiting until it's finally ready to go.BLUETOOTH DISTANCE (higher than they claim)I am not allowed to have my phone in the lab with me, so I use this option to receive messages on my watch. My desk is about 30 yards from my desk and I've had pretty good luck with it always detecting the connection at that distance. Some parts of the lab are better than others, even when a smaller distance, sometimes I'll lose the connection, and I assume that's because of other rooms between me and the phone (the hallway and my office wall seem to be fine).VIVOSMART COMPARISON (see photo)I got my husband the VivoSmart 14 months ago and think this is a better option. While many of the basic functions are the same, his VivoSmart had display issues at the 6 month mark. By 9 months it's barely readable and at a year he had to stop wearing it. I'm now waffling if I should get him the VivoActive HR, VivoActive, or a different brand. You can see in the photos attached the difference in size and height. The VivoSmart is much thinner width wise on the wrist, but the height it sticks up is bigger.Functional differences between the basics for both watches are almost identical. Both track activity and can be set for running or used as a general stepcounter. Both have a movement minder that reminds you to get up and walk around (a function you can disable if it bothers you). Both have a large display for the time though the Smart is not able to be customized. It's easier to view stats on the Active, but if you don't want a lot of extra features it would be fine (except for the display going out after 6-9 months).REPURCHASE?I would likely repurchase the next model of this watch, particularly if the deadspace around the touchscreen is smaller/ removed, making the overall watch size smaller.PHOTO GUIDE1: photo of the watch on for reference of size and band size2: side profile of the watch for height comparison3: VivoSmart display problem, general comparison of size difference between the two models. The link below has nice side views of this watch.PRODUCTS MENTIONEDGarmin Vivosmart - Black (Large)
