Makita 5377MG 7-1/4" Magnesium Hypoid Saw
Hypoid Gears Deliver More Power to the Blade for More Efficient Cutting
The Makita 7-1/4” Magnesium Hypoid Saw features highly durable magnesium components and a powerful 15 AMP Makita-built industrial motor with a hypoid gearing system for maximum power output. The 5377MG seamlessly balances weight, power, durability, and ease of use for optimum cutting performance.
Saw features a Makita-built 15 AMP industrial motor that delivers 4,500 RPM, combined with well-balanced magnesium components for a lighter weight saw that delivers true power the professional user demands. Users will benefit from the precision-machined hypoid gears, which deliver more constant power than worm drive gears. Hypoid gears have greater surface contact so more power is transferred over a wider surface, providing increased power and durability. In addition, hypoid gears are in an oil bath for consistent oil coverage. The saw has a large cutting capacity (2-3/8” at 90°) with a maximum bevel capacity of 51.5° and positive stops at 22.5°, 45° and 51.5° for quick back-and-forth changes.
Ergonomic and Ease-of-Use Features
Magnesium components allowed Makita to engineer a saw with less weight (13.2 lbs.) that is well-balanced and jobsite tough. Additional design details include greater clearance between the rear handle and the blade case to provide a better grip for larger hands or for users with gloves, as well as a wider space between the blade and housing for a clearer view of the blade and measurement scale.
Engineered for a Range of Applications
The 5377MG is built for framing walls, floors and roofs using a range of dimensional lumber and dense engineered lumber, including LVL, PSL and I-Joists, headers, and microlams; as well as ripping panels such as plywood, OSB, particle board, and dense structural panels. Other applications include plunge and bevel cutting.
Other Features
- Better fit with comfortable rubber grip on handle
- Retractable hook allows tool to remain close by, but never in the way
- Make quick, one-handed adjustments using large, rubberized levers
- Settings are easy to read with oversized number and ruler markings
- Blade wrench is attached to saw for fast and convenient blade changing
- Reinforced 10 ft. power cord withstands jobsite abuse and lowers repair costs
- Includes a premium 7-1/4" carbide tipped framing blade that cuts 50% faster and lasts 2x longer

Ergonomic and Ease-of-Use
Features Magnesium components allowed Makita to engineer a saw with less weight (13 pounds) that is well-balanced and jobsite tough. Additional design details include greater clearance between the rear handle and the blade case to provide a better grip for larger hands or for users with gloves, as well as a wider space between the blade and housing for a clearer view of the blade and measurement scale. Worm drive (or hypoid gear) saws are heavier than standard circular saws, but have several advantages.
- their gearbox slows blade rotation to about 4400 rpm from the typical 5800 rpm (e.g., Porter Cable Sidewinder). Makita says this is to increase torque and cutting power.
- the motor is parallel with the cut line, so the saw is long and relatively narrow. This increases tool control since there is less potential for the saw torquing away from the cut. E.g., it's easier to control this type of saw with one hand once the cut begins.
- having the blade on the left side of the tool is a boon to right-handers, because you can see the blade as it cuts.
I sold my first generation Makita hypoid saw recently, even though there was nothing wrong with it, and immediately purchased the 5377MG as its replacement.
Pros:
- as of this writing (November 2011) no saw of this type is lighter than this model's 13.2 pounds. Magnesium is used for the motor case, the blade shroud, the blade guard, and the baseplate. No doubt, other makers will soon make lightweight magnesium saws...
- hypoid drives (see Customer Image) run cooler than worm drives, which allowed Makita to seal the gear box. As a result, no oil changes are ever required. Hotter running worm drive saws used frequently will require periodic gear-case oil changes and the gears wear faster - at least according to Fine Woodworking.
- excellent ergonomics - well balanced and comfortable for my XXL hands. The rubber coated rear handle is really nice.
- all control levers have a thick non-slip rubber exterior. It's quick and easy to set depth of cut, angle, and to control the blade guard.
- the blade guard is much improved over my old hypoid; it doesn't seem to hang up, regardless of the material width, thickness, etc., and its placement is just right.
- the baseplate on my 5377MG is perfectly flat.
- cutting angle is easily adjusted between 90 and 51.5 degrees. To go over 45 degrees, there is a separate knob to turn, just in case you didn't mean to set it that high.
- includes a stored-in-the handle Allen wrench for blade changes.
- heavy-duty rafter hook is easily swivelled out of the way.
- 10', 14 gage, 3-wire rubber cord with a superb cord protector at the motor end. Cord stays flexible even in very cold temperatures.
- includes a 24-tooth carbide thin kerf blade
Cons:
- Steel reinforced magnesium or all steel, base plates, available on competing models, are less prone to bending (if dropped) than the all magnesium 5377MG plate, according to Fine Woodworking's Tool Guide.
- There is a small torque-kick when it first starts - just be aware of it.
Other:
- there's no blade brake, but a spinning blade under zero load will stop in just over 3 seconds.
- A rip fence is an extra cost item. If you need one, do an Amazon search on "makita rip fence". This is a con if you need a rip fence - for everyone else, it's lacking makes the tool cost less.
Summary:
This excellent lighter rear handle saw should be on your short list.

Summary:
This excellent lighter rear handle saw should be on your short list.
I almost went with the considerably less expensive Ridgid worm drive, but after researching all the advantages of a hypoid gear over a worm gear the final choice required little thought.
They only complaints I have are in the product description:
1) I wish they provided the actual at the blade torque specs on these. It would make comparative shopping much easier.
2) The description specs state in 2 different boxes that this is “brushless”. It absolutely is not a brushless motor. I did how ever know this was wrong before I ordered it because in the picture you can clearly see the 2 black caps on the sides of it for replacing the brushes.
UPDATE - Certainly one of the best if not the very best. Great value for the price. Very comfortable. A solid saw. Extremely pleased and would definately buy the same saw again.
PROS Cuts very smooth. Noise is less than I expected. Adjustments are easy. Cutting guide is on point. The blade is very good quality. Very comfortable. Has lots of power. Lighter than some but heavier than sidewinder saws.
CONS the blade depth scale is black with white letters - smeared paint on the gage. The scale would have been better if it faced the sawyer - not to the side.
