The cd came in perfect condition.

J.D. Allen is the real deal. His tenor sax tone is his own while being rooted in the great tradition, and his musical ideas come from life, hard listening, and hard work, not practice book exercises. His trio of bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston means business. They have something to express, and it is not played to impress other musicians and hipsters, though it probably will. On this album, Allen reclaims the term "Americana" for ancestral jazz and blues tunes. The results are deep and magical. Do NOT sleep on J.D. Allen.

This album is for personal listening, and I use it to reflect and listen to Coltrane, Adderly, and other saxophonists.

This artist has real depth. Another reviewer likened him to some of the bebop greats. I can't say he is another Monk or Coltrane, but his material has deep originality. A true artist for today. I was impressed.

JD Allen opens his liner notes with a profuse apology for creating yet another album of blues-derived jazz. True, it's a field that's well mined, but since I happen to like bluesy jazz, I bought it. It's not possible, is it, to truly exhaust a particular field of jazz music?
Well... maybe Allen was just being honest.
The album does benefit from tasty extra texture added by the bass and drums, and JD Allen is in the front ranks of young saxophonists so he's going to do right by the material, whatever it is.
But maybe I do have enough blues based jazz in my collection for the time being.
I prefer the other album by him that I have in my collection, "The Matador and the Bull," which seems fresher and more creative.
So, 3-1/2 stars with another 1/2 star for "Honesty in Liner Notes."

J.D. Allen is in outstanding soulful and lyrical form. Basically, it's as close to John Coltrane style and technique as any artist performing today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Den Jazz ins richtige Leben zurück gebracht
Reviewed in Germany on April 17, 2017

"If You 're Lonesome, Then You 're Not Alone."

Profundo y asequible a cualquier oido.
