Works well
Amount needed - I treated an extra large sofa and a small fully upholstered chair with two coats each and used 4.5 cans (10 oz size). Found that using painters tape to mark the untreated areas helped me remember where I had or had not spayed since I couldn't really see a significant change in the fabric's appearance and when I would look away to open my second can of Scotchgard I would lose my place.
Smell. If you've ever stepped into a small nail salon that applies acrylic nails, that's about what this stuff smells like to me. Since I currently live in a high rise, I was concerned about the ventilation requirements since I can only open a patio door and crack a window. I applied one coat to my sofa, got caught up on a phone call and didn't leave the room, causing a slight headache (totally my fault). When it came time for the second coat, I was sure to go to a different room after spraying the item and had no issues whatsoever. Just sharing my mistake in case anyone else without outdoor space is thinking of using this product - it's very possible and very much worth doing, but just be sure to leave the area until the odor dissipates.

jose Guerrero: Initial Question/Comment: I applied the Scotch Guard fabric cleaner to remove stains on my 4 fabric chair. The product removed the stains. However, becomes hardened and rough. The seat used to be soft as to be expected from a fabric. I water sponged the chair with no change. Is there anything I can do bring back the softness of the fabric?
System: Welcome jose Guerrero! Thank you for contacting 3M. You are important to us. A 3M Scotchgard Support Representative will be right with you.
System: Richard H has joined this session!
System: Connected with Richard H. Your reference number for this chat session is 152306.
Richard H: Thank you for contacting 3M where we apply Science to Life, my name is Richard. I see you are having issues with the Scotchgard Fabric Cleaner.
jose Guerrero: Yes
Richard H: Do you know what exactly the fabric is of the "4 fabric chair"? Is it a microsuede?
jose Guerrero: Looking at the label. It says the fabric consists of acrylic 50%, cotton 30% and polyster 20%
Richard H: Did you do a color fast test of the fabric? How did you apply the product?
jose Guerrero: I sprayed the product into the fabric and then used a damp cloth to spread evenly the product and to dry the fabric.
Richard H: Did you saturate the fabric where the stain was?
jose Guerrero: I did a little bit but not too much. I was afraid the product will go deeper into the foam underneath. In any event the stains disappeared after light saturation of the stained areas.
Richard H: To remove the Scotchgard, one will have to clean the material according to the material's cleaning instructions. It is best to reach back to the manufacturer of the chair to do that.
jose Guerrero: It sounds like passing the buck after the questions. You could have started with don't ask me ask the chair manufacturer. How about a 50 year old chair?
jose Guerrero: Is there a way to send me a copy of the chat by email
jose Guerrero: I could have googled for the answer. Do you want me to forward you by email the solution from google search?
Richard H: The 50 year old chair, do you know what the fabric is of that chair?
Richard H: We do not send the discussions, I am sorry per company policy.
jose Guerrero: I don't think you're reading the chats. I already gave the you what the fabric of the chair
Richard H: If what you gave me is the composite of the chair, then, you also did not answer me if you did a color fast test in an inconspicuous area nor did you respond to me if it were a microsuede.
jose Guerrero: what the fabric is of that chair? - this was your odd question recently which was already answered earlier
jose Guerrero: It is not a microsuede and I did a color fast test
Richard H: We suggest to do a color fast test in an inconspicuous area of the fabric to see if the color is transferred and if there is a change in the consistency of the fabric.
jose Guerrero: I did all that in the beginning on small side of the chair
Richard H: To remove the scotchgard; which it appears is now the desire to do, To remove Scotchgard from fabric, carpeting, leather, etc., you need to clean the material according to the material's cleaning instructions. If the customer does not know the cleaning instructions for the item with the Scotchgard on it, they need to check with their item's manufacturer.
jose Guerrero: You are repeating your answers which I already my response. Please read the chats
Richard H: I am repeating yes, because at this point, it seems one would need to go back to the manufacturer to further identify the proper way to clean the fabric. The Scotchgard should be able to be removed according to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
Top reviews from other countries
I generously applied multiple coatings of the spray and left the same to dry. Initially, the fabric felt a bit rough, but after using the sofa for a couple of days, the texture of the fabric seemed to be back to normal.
Some months later, I was having packing a container of fish curry and used the sofa to hold it. Unfortunately, I managed to spill a significant amount of the gravy on to the sofa and the cushions. I was able to immediately open the cushion cover, but the only thing I could do with the sofa was to wipe it with a damp cloth.
Once it dried, we found absolutely no signs of the spilled curry. Hats off the 3M fabric protector!
