Ok, I've had this for a few weeks now and I've found fun and durable. I've dropped it out of the sky several times, hit my fence full speed and nicked my raspberry bush a half dozen times in the back yard. The blades fly off but are easily put back on and I've had no damage to the quadcopter. I will say that the advanced mode makes the quadcopter really scream across the sky and has caused me a bit of trouble as far as it getting out of range. Intermediate mode is fun and a nice compromise. Relatively agile and fast but still very controllable in a backyard setting.
Update. I've had this quadcopter for two months now and fly it several times a week. I still am surprised at it's durability. I have smacked into almost everything in the backyard several times with little to no damage. I did have to re-solder the negative connection going into the quadcopter. I then wrapped it with a little bit of electrical tape and it has been holding together very well. I am sure younger kids could destroy this thing but being a bit older and having some RC experience I have found the durability to be amazing. After getting used to it I have found I can fly it in any reasonable wind conditions in the highest rate mode and it handles great. I am upgrading from a four to five star. For $40 you can't beat it. Also once you get really comfortable with the controls the "aerobatics" are much more fun and capable than I originally experienced.
I'm actually on my third one but the review only gets better. The first one I was flying in high winds, 15 or 20 mph and I got cocky and took it up high and a gust came along and took it away forever. I immediately bought another one. I had it for almost thirty days and the red led lights quit working. I sent holy stone an email with a video an eleven second video showing / explaining what happened and they replaced it for free. I did not expect that for a toy grade quadcopter. I was just fishing for a discount on another new one. Not that it isn't flyable with the lights out but even during the day they help with orientation. I can't say enough good things about the product or the company.
As a total novice, my son found that the drone controls took a little while to get used to, but once he started getting the hang of it, he had a ball. The drone is small enough and agile enough to use indoors in a decently sized room, and we wanted to practice inside before going outside and risking the thing getting stuck in a tree or going off of our property by accident. The trickiest thing was learning to keep the vertical height of the drone steady (with the left joy stick), while simultaneously getting the drone to move backwards and forwards and side to side (with the right joy stick). The drone doesn't have any automatic vertical stabilization, so you have to constantly adjust the vertical height, and the vertical control is touchy, so it's easy to go zipping up and down faster and farther than you intend. In this sense, outside might actually have been an easier place to learn to fly the drone, without a low ceiling to bump into whenever the vertical movement went a little overboard. But after a few days of practice, my son was confidently zipping the drone all around the house and having a blast. (In the name of helping my son learn to fly the drone, I felt it was my duty to do a little flying myself and was immediately addicted, too!) In all, I think this is an excellent starter drone with great agility and a reasonable (though not trivial) learning curve.
That said, we did have one issue with the drone. After a couple weeks of getting the drone, it began to have trouble binding to the controller (each time you turn on the drone, you have to go through a series of steps to link the signal from the controller/transmitter to the drone, and you cannot do anything with the drone until you get the controller and the drone talking to each other, which is called "binding" them together). We would go through the proper steps to bind the drone and the transmitter, but it simply wouldn't work half the time. If we tried over and over, it might eventually bind, but then the next day it would not bind again. This happened increasingly, until the drone simply stopped binding to the controller at all. At that point, the drone was useless. I contacted Holy Stone customer service, and they requested that I submit a video showing the problem. I made a little video with my phone showing that we were going through all the right steps but the drone wouldn't bind to the controller. The Holy Stone rep quickly responded that the motherboard apparently was damaged and promptly sent me a replacement drone at no cost. The replacement has worked fine (so far), and we are back to having tons of fun with this drone. If there were a way to give a 4.5 rating, I would do that, because it's obviously not ideal to have the drone fail so soon after getting it. But the customer service was so quick and pleasant, and the replacement has been working well, and the drone is so much fun to fly, and my son is so happy with it, that I'd rather err upward and give it a 5 than go down to a 4. I'm definitely very happy with this purchase.
