I was excited when Microsoft Announced the Performance Base. I had been waiting to purchase a SurfaceBook but needed the better Graphics subsystem and RAM.

Issue 1 - Amazon - I have no idea what happened to Prime where shipping is concerned but it is flat out BULL. I paid for Overnight and recieved the item A WEEK later. This is becoming the norm, but when you drop $3k, you kind of want your new toy now.

When it showed up, the unboxing was great and I was VERY IMPRESSED with the unit itself. Well made, sleek, light, just a geeky geeky dream.

Issue 2 - Amazon - This was sold as NEW, at unboxing, I find the pen did not have the battery blocking plastic piece. I seriously doubt I was the first person to use this item after it left Microsoft. The pen DID NOT WORK.

So, I went online, no easy way to call Amazon, I ordered new batteries for the pen (in case that was the issue). Waited 2 more days (Yay Prime SHipping worked for 6 batteries). I inserted the new AAAA per instructions, still dead.

Issue 2 - Microsoft Service - So, I went online to Microsoft Support. I thought "surely they will just send me a new pen for my $3k product". I was wrong. After dealing with a non-English speaker reading from a script, I was told to return the unit to Amazon.

So, I did. I did not ask for a replacement and I am not buying the new Surface Desktop as planned either. I vote with my $$$. I'll keep my $6k, Amazon and Microsoft can keep thier broken pen!

I am not telling anyone else what to do here, just relating my experience.

    URGENT UPDATE: November 2019
I live in the East and it can get pretty cold. I also have two metal tables that I use as my desk. I rarely do it, but I decided to turn my computer off for the night. I "Believe" that having the off but still hot computer sitting on the cold metal desk caused the bottom of the computer bubble and now it split at the seam on the right underneath part of the computer. There is now a gap that I'm going to have to cover with tape to keep out dirt and dust. The computer itself is still working great, thank goodness. I've never had this happen before on any of the many many computers I have owned so it was a bit of a shock! I'm not docking any stars only because this computer has been a great workhorse for the past two+ years. I'm hoping that this is an exception and not common for the rest of you.

    *Six Months Later*....
I am still in luv with this machine. My primary use is for graphic design and I have had no issues running any of the Adobe CC products. As far as gaming, One of the MMORPGs that I play made the computer overheat (graphics card related) but that was easily taken care of by adjusting the graphics options in the game. Being able to transform the computer from PC to Tablet is fantastic.

I have absolutely no regrets for choosing this computer over any of the others that I researched before purchase.
    *****

I have had my Surface Book w/ Perf Base for a little over a month now. Overall I LUV everything about it and I wish I could give the machine 5 stars however....as of March 2017 the computer does not support the connection of unpowered external hard drives from the USB 3.0 ports or via the Surface Dock. This is a big issue for me as I have accumulated quite a few external hard drives with data I still want to access.

The scenario I ran into was when connecting an unpowered external hard drive to the machine, it would work for a brief time (I'm talking minutes not days) and then I was unable to move files from the machine to the drive or vice versa. Also, during the shut down process, the computer would get hung up until I pulled the cable on the external hard drive. My first thought was that my brand new hard drive was defective or I needed to update the driver, then I found that none of my drives worked on this machine (Seagate, WD, HP, and Silicon Power). All of them work with my other Win 10 computer, so the drives were not the issue.

After a lot of web research I was finally able to connect my Western Digital Book (1TB) which has its own power supply, but it would only work with a USB 2.0 extension cable. I also chatted with Microsoft and the support person confirmed that the ports would work with USB flash drives but not drives that required more power. I'm not giving up quite yet - I've ordered a USB 3.0 dual power y shape Type A to Micro B cable. I'm also going to try to go through a powered USB hub, but people don't tend to carry a hub around so this isn't a great solution. I'll update this review as soon as I finish more testing.

UPDATE: The USB 3.0 dual power y shape Type A to Micro B cable worked perfectly. It's not the optimum solution for me since I use a wireless mouse and the cable uses the only two USB ports on the machine. I'm still much happier since I found a work around. People who use the onboard trackpad and don't require a constant USB device when undocked will have no issue - just get the additional cable.

I got this because I needed something portable for school. This is lightweight and travels as easy as a tablet. In fact, this is only marginally heavier than my old Samsung tablet, despite being considerably larger.

I might have gotten a Surface Pro tablet, which would have suited my needs well enough, but I chose the Surface Book for a couple reasons. First, I do a lot of work on the bus and Surface tablets use a kickstand to remain upright, which would have required me to bring a lapdesk with me everywhere I go. Since the dock for this is more like a single-piece laptop, it's more convenient to just sit on my lap whenever. Second, I've used a Surface tablet before. I like this keyboard better. I prefer the touch-pad mouse to finger-scrolling on the tablet itself. Third, and what most would probably view as the main draw, is that this has actual USB and SD card ports.

If none of those things are an issue for you, save your money and just get a tablet. They're less expensive and function the same.

As for how the computer runs, it's about as well as you'd expect--functional with some hiccups. It struggles with media heavy websites (gifs, videos, etc... Tumblr is the bane of its existence, Facebook can slow it down depending on how video heavy my feed is). I'm not sure if that's because I use FireFox instead of Edge, but I'm not sure why that should make a significant difference. On my (also Windows 10) desktop I never have such an issue, so I suspect it just doesn't have the computing power for such web content.

It runs the Office programs very well. I've rarely had issue with unresponsive programs (though it does happen). I haven't installed many non-Microsoft products on it, yet, but iTunes works on it better than on my desktop. It tells me that using FireFox instead of Edge drains my battery quicker, but I'm not so sure. I'll get to the battery in a second.

It comes with the Windows Ink Workspace: Sticky Notes, Sketchpad, and Screen Sketch.

Sticky Notes is pretty straightforward: It works as a Post-It on your desktop. Easy to edit and delete, plus you can change the color of the note to match your theme, if you care that much. I don't really use this.

Sketchpad--I hate it. It's the most basic of the basic. You get one pencil shape in adjustable sizes and 30 preset colors, one pen shape in adjustable sizes and 30 preset colors, one highlighter shape in adjustable sizes and 6 preset colors. The eraser tool erases the entire line, rather than just a small portion of it. No layers. So far as I can tell, there's no way to start a new image, you just have to save as and then clear the current image. If you want to draw on this thing, definitely invest in a proper program. Sketchpad is the digital equivalent of doodling in the margins of your high school math notes, but with less control.

Screen Sketch is the exact opposite; I love it. It takes a screenshot of whatever the user is currently working on and immediately opens it for editing. It has the same incredibly basic set up as Sketchpad, but it's only meant for making quick notations on your screen, so I don't suspect the average person would need as much editing power for it.

The battery... confuses me. 90% of my use so far has been browsing the internet--online shopping, Facebook, video streaming. I will be streaming video one day and it will say "65% battery, 7 hours remaining" and the next day I will be just browsing Facebook and it will say "78% battery, 5.5 hours remaining." I understand that different tasks require more or less computing power, and therefore drain the battery at different rates. But I can't imagine that aimlessly scrolling through Facebook takes more power than streaming video, especially when the battery has a higher charge.

Overall, I don't regret this purchase, the Surface Book performs as I need it to, but I'm not sure I would buy it again. Even getting it on sale at Christmas, this is much more expensive than the Surface Pro tablets, with an insignificant amount of performance difference. Knowing what I know now, I think I would forego being able to work on the bus and the touch-pad mouse to save a couple hundred bucks. Having the USB port is nice, but I can easily access my work through OneDrive and am rarely anywhere where I can't access WiFi of some sort, so they aren't a total necessity for me.
