Product Description
Ideal for backpacking, camping as well as home and auto emergency kits, the small, ultralight Esbit Pocket Stove folds compact enough to fit in a pocket. Constructed from durable, electrolytic galvanized steel that resists corrosion, the Esbit Pocket Stove features two selectable cooking grades and is suitable for use with cups, pots, and pans (not included). The solid fuel tablets work at high altitudes and sub-zero temperatures, are smokeless and have almost no combustion residue, can also be used as a fire starter for a campfire or BBQ, and if kept dry will last for 10+ years. The Esbit Pocket Stove makes an excellent survival or emergency stove and works equally as well for the solo hiker at camp. I pack both my cooking gear and my water canteen together inside my MOLLE II canteen cover, giving me a compact, lightweight, and efficient system for carrying and getting to those items. My Esbit Ultralight Folding Pocket Stove with four 14-gram Esbit Solid Fuel Tabs (both inside the heavy-duty zip-lock bag) fit easily into the bottom of my Official U.S. Military MOLLE II Canteen Cover, followed by my Rothco Stainless Steel Canteen Cup Lid #11512 below my Rothco G.I. Type Stainless Steel Canteen Cup #512, which holds my Nalgene BPA-free Tritan Oasis 32 oz. Canteen with my Rothco Canteen Cup Stove/Stand #918 slipped down over my canteen. While this pack arrangement may look a little goofy, compared to the appearance of a "typical" canteen in a canteen cover, and is definitely not mil-spec, the top flap of the canteen cover keeps everything in place and the strap buckles easily into its latch, just like it is supposed to do. I can also pack my bottles of Potable Water Purification Tablets with PA+, Crystal Lite Natural Lemonade Packets, Drip Drop Oral Rehydration Powder packets (to prevent dehydration if I become ill on the trail -- a not unheard of problem), my UST BlastMatch, and my Laser Jet Butane Lighter, all fit neatly into the two Velcro-secured side pockets on my U.S. Military Molle II Canteen Cover. The space my Esbit stove would have taken up if packed in my backpack can now be used for another freeze-dried meal or beverage package, or an extra 70% cocoa chocolate bar, or another piece of gear to make the hike easier or more enjoyable.
In case you are wondering why I have both the Esbit Stove and the Rothco Canteen Cup Stove/Stand in my pack, here is the reason. I have found the Esbit Stove to be more stable and more efficient at allowing the solid fuel tabs to produce their maximum amount of heat and more effectively reflecting that heat up to the bottom of my canteen cup than the Rothco stove/stand. I use the Rothco stove/stand as a compact, easily packed windscreen for the Esbit stove. I sawed through the Rothco stove/stand in the center of the large rectangular opening on one side so I could spread it open to easily fit around the base of the Esbit stove. This helps keep the wind from blowing too much of the fuel tabs' heat out of the stove, before it can get to the bottom of my canteen cup and get the water in it boiling as quickly as possible, which gets the hot food or beverage inside me as soon as possible.
The Esbit Ultralight Folding Pocket Stove and the Esbit 14-gram Solid Fuel Tablets help me enjoy hot meals and hot beverages quickly, simply, efficiently, compactly, and economically when there's no mess hall nearby. It works great for me, and might make meal-time easier or more enjoyable for you on your next hike.
To test it, I measured 500 ml of water (about 2 cups), per the description, into a metal cup. The water’s initial temperature was about 70 degrees. I used a tablet that came with the stove. It took one match and about 15 seconds to get the tablet lit. At 8 minutes I used a meat thermometer to check the water. The max temperature I got was 195 degrees. The tablet lasted for about 11 minutes before it was consumed. For reference, the air temperature was about 75 degrees, no wind and the altitude was about 640 feet above sea level. There were air bubbles at the bottom, and some water movement and vapor, but I never got to a full rolling boil. I repeated the test with another tablet I got in a box set of 12 tablets (several months older than the stove or about 4-1/2 years old). I got a max temperature of 205 degrees.
While not a true boil of 212 degrees, I suspect the water was hot enough for rehydrating a freeze dried meal or making hot drinks. And the tablet lasted about the time Esbit says it would, about 11 minutes. I suspect had I used a lid on the cup and/or a windscreen, I might have gotten a higher temp or a quicker time to the max temp.
The tablet left a lot of soot on the bottom of the cup. The new aluminum cup was black on the bottom after 11 minutes over the lit tablet. However, I got the soot off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.
A lot is said about the odor. The sealed tablets did not have any significant odor that I could notice. But the open tablet did have a strong odor. Interestingly, I have a Bradford Pear tree in full bloom next to my house. The blooms have a very distinct “fragrance.” The Esbit tablets smell just like the tree blooms.
The tablets are sealed with a thin plastic sheet that the tablets can be pushed through. It’s probably a good idea to keep the tablets sealed in a heavy plastic bag for extended shelf life.
I gave it 4 stars because I could not get a full boil as the description says.
