Absence is as crucial as presence.

The decision to stop dating has made Vaughn Hargrave’s life infinitely simpler: he has friends, an excellent wardrobe, and a job in the industry he loves. That’s all he really needs, especially since sex isn’t his forte anyway and no one else seems interested in a purely romantic connection. But when a piece is stolen from his art gallery and insurance investigator Jonah Sondern shows up, Vaughn finds himself struggling with that decision.

Jonah wants his men like his coffee: hot, intense, and daily. But Vaughn seems to be the one gay guy in Toronto who doesn’t do hookups, which is all Jonah can offer. No way can Jonah give Vaughn what he really wants, not when Jonah barely understands what love is.

When another painting goes missing, tension ramps up both on and off the clock. Vaughn and Jonah find themselves grappling not just with stolen art, but with their own differences. Because a guy who wants nothing but romance and a guy who wants nothing but sex will never work—right? Not unless they find a way to fill in the spaces between them.

So there are a lot of things I loved about this book, a lot of which have to do with representation and how wonderful it was. But first and foremost, I just loved the writing! Lennox has this lovely narrative voice, fresh and engaging, and I adored it. It was funny -- so funny! -- and I even appreciated that she remained true to the Maple Leafs and had my Bruins win the game referenced in the story >>

The characters were so lively and realistic, and the dialogue! So great. These characters came across as real people and they spoke that way, too. And if I don't get a book about Zay, I will cry many tears :D I *did* cry when Vaughn had his moment of realizing he was asexual. It was familiar, I think, to many of us who finally have that moment where a label exists to tell us "You are not alone. Other people feel this way." It was lovely. Jonah's issues were realistic and provided drama to the story without feeling contrived.

Basically I think Ms. Lennox is a super talented writer and can't wait to read more of her work in the future, and I'm stoked to see there are more books in this series.

What really impressed and delighted me -- DELIGHTED ME -- about this book was the phenomenal rep for non-traditional relationships. It was probably one of the best I've read.

I LOVED how this book ended. The idea of open sexual relationships -- where partners are free to explore their sexuality with others and not necessarily form emotional bonds while doing so -- is something I so rarely get to read about, and when I see it, 99% of the time it's portrayed negatively. I get that it's not for everyone -- I really do -- but hey, it's also *for* someone and it's nice to see that portrayed in a positive and affirming fashion. I love how sex-positive this book was, that Jonah's enjoyment of sex had reasons, perhaps, in his upbringing but also he was aware of that and totally owned it. It didn't mean he had to change or stop having the kind of sex he liked, and that was really awesome to read.

Vaughn's support of Jonah's needs was so lovely, and what I just adored about this book was how they were able to make their relationship work *for them* regardless of what people might think about it, or how others would view it, because *they knew what they needed to work together*. This is so important, because when your non-trad relationship structure is either not portrayed at all or is portrayed negatively *ALL THE TIME*, when society's view of love and romance is so rigidly defined that it's alienating to be outside of those celebrated norms, you do feel like it's you and your partner against the world (or just you against the world). Seeing this kind of accepted and celebrated relationship was just...man, it was just *great*. I can't express how much it thrilled me to read about it being one that worked. It does, for a lot of people. We just don't always talk about it, because we're used to keeping quiet.

I had no idea how much I'd like seeing an open relationship that simply was about sex, because there's nothing wrong with that. If it works for both partners, if it provides them the structure and framework they need to be happy and fulfilled, then that's all that matters. I especially loved the detail of Vaughn commiserating with Jonah after a failed hook-up, that they had a moment of shared amusement over it -- *swoons* -- and they did this because they're on the same page, and they communicate, and their relationship really works for them. This little detail was one of my favorites, because it *happens* and I loved being able to relate to it.

I also really enjoyed how Vaughn's asexuality was written, as it was also very positive and affirming. People discovering their sexuality is one of my faves to read about, especially when it's so joyful. Vaughn might have struggled at first, but being able to come to that place with him, as a reader, was just a delight.

So, yeah, I loved this book for a lot of reasons, and I will happily read everything Ms. Lennox writes from now until the end of all things xDD

An endearing opposites-attract romance, with a side of art theft mystery and class difference, between quiet asexual artist Vaughn Hargrave and brash insurance investigator Jonah, a gay former foster child who deals with stress by having quasi-public and often rough sex.

This book has positive reviews on Goodreads from people on the ace spectrum, and Cass Lennox is ace, so yay for #ownvoices and good ace rep. Plus, this book has two of the most interesting, well-developed character growth arcs I've seen. Vaughn doesn't find the asexual identity that makes sense of his underwhelming sexual experiences until partway through the book. It's a lightbulb moment for Vaughn that gives him confidence to negotiate for what he wants with Jonah. Baffled Jonah has to struggle to accept that someone might value him as a person, and freely give him affection and comfort. That's more of an emotional barrier for him than his and Vaughn's different sexual preferences. So proud of both these guys! Who are fictional characters, yes, but still!

Content note: If you are not cool with the idea that leads in a romance novel might have sex with other people, this is not the book for you, for various reasons.

I seldom pick books for the cover but I love this one and the book is just as good. Vaughn works at an art gallery that keeps getting robbed and Jonah is the insurance investigator on the claim. Vaughn is an asexual gay and Jonah is promiscuous and into hookups. Vaughn comes from money and is an artist while Jonah went through the foster system and is making it on his own.
So, opposites attract, as they say. And these two are just lovely together as they learn about each other. Oh, they have to investigate the art thieves also, but that's more of a side story. The two men learn to compromise while also admitting their very different attractions to each other. Vaughn wants romance and Jonah wants sex.
They're both lovely characters, Vaughn especially, but I grew to like Jonah a lot too as I learned more of his backstory. The Toronto setting is nice. The romance is tender and sweet.
What else do you want from a romance book?

Hmmmmmm, I liked this book (with reservations). I probably should have read more of the reviews because the blurb does not accurately reflect the relationship between the two MCs.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Vaughn isn't just "meh" about sex. He comes out as asexual. And Jonah doesn't just like to sleep around a lot. He HAS to have public, anonymous, rough sex to make himself feel better about his lack of self esteem. The open relationship these two agree on (at least they agree) doesn't feel Happily Ever After to me at all, which is really what I want when I invest time into reading a book. It feels much more like Happily, I Found Someone Who Says I Can Continue To Have Sex With Anyone Anytime I Want. That's just not romantic to me. I know it's MY hang-up. I have friends in open relationships and they love each other and it seems like it works, but man, I just don't get it. So I don't really love reading about it. It doesn't feel like a balanced relationship (again, MY view). As a result of this relationship, there is really only one mild sexytime between the two MCs. I don't always need the sexytimes in the books I read (Cullinan's AntiSocial comes to mind), but I'd like to know if it's going to be MCs who we don't get to see make much of a physical connection.

The art thief is obvious from the very beginning. When the thief is caught, they break down like a Scooby Doo or 1960s Batman TV series villain and spill everything. "I would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for you meddling kids!"

I did like Vaughn's drunken night. That seemed very realistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolut mitreißend

5.0 out of 5 stars So interesting I couldn't put the book down

I started the book and couldn't put it down before having finished it. More than a gay story, this book shines a new light on topics that aren't easily addressed and usually stay out of books. It was so interesting to follow Jonah and Vaughn, see how they handle what's happening to them and how they deal with their differences. The story is beautiful, heartfelt, and despite my worries at first, I finished it with a content smile. I'd recommend it without a doubt.

Such a fantastic book. Vaughn's storyline especially hit so many emotional notes for me. I saw so much of my own identity journey in his that sometimes I had to put the book down because it was so accurate to moments in my own life. This is not something I find often in books and I have to applaud Cass Lennox for Vaughn Hargrave.

Just a head's up though to any sex averse/repulsed individuals (or anyone uncomfortable with explicit sex scenes) that the few in this book get pretty detailed, but I didn't find that they interfered with the flow of the story and were well integrated. The explicitness just kind of surprised me at first, but that's probably because of the personal stuff I mentioned in the first paragraph, ha.

All in all I loved this book and would love to see more like it in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

It’s been a while since I couldn’t put a book down. This was excellent! I laughed. I cried. I could totally relate to Vaughn. Reading some of his thoughts and comments, I felt the author did a great job portraying an asexual character. I also appreciate how Zay mentions that not all men are promiscuous or in “need” of constant sex. (Otherwise, some readers might feel that Lennox is lumping all men in the Jonah category.) The story is sweet and romantic, yet very real.
