We have had two of these Marathon timers for over 4-1/2 years and they are still working perfectly. Just thought I’d let you know how reliable they’ve been.
ORIGINAL REVIEW 3-10-17:
After purchasing several other kitchen timers, and finding all of those lacking in on way or another, we decided to buy the Marathon 24 Hour Digital Timer. The main reason we decided on this one was the 24 hour timer function as we do a lot of slow cooking, sauces, etc. This is a very easy to use timer. There is a switch to select one of three functions: Timer, Clock, and Count Up. When in the Timer position, and the set time reaches zero, it beeps loudly enough to hear from a few rooms away and automatically starts counting up. I didn't think we would find the count up very useful but have come to appreciate it. In the actual Count Up position, it basically does just that, it counts up from zero. I guess this would be useful for doing exercising or when you just want to time how long it takes for you to do something. And the Clock setting is just that, it's a clock. We don't use it in that regard in the kitchen but my wife said she would like one for the upstairs bathroom to use as a clock as well as a timer. So we purchased a second Marathon for that room. The timer uses one AA battery (included) and appear to be well built. The battery cover is very tight, which I think is a good thing, but some people might find it a struggle to open to change the battery. And I should note that the timer display is always on, there is no shut off switch. I imagine the battery will have to be changed once a year but that is only a guess. We have only had the timers for about a month so can't speak for longevity or durability but so far we are very happy with both and have no problem recommending them.
So I started looking at what might be a better quality timer and found this one. It is great! Sure it costs a bit more than twice as much, but this one is beefy. In addition, it has a countdown timer, and count up timer, and when you're not timing something, it can go into clock mode, regular or international. And the timer times up to 24 hours!
While there some decent things on Amazon for a low price, in this case it makes sense to spend a bit more and get something to looks like it's going to last!
The plastic case is made in two parts, which snap together. I recently dropped one, from waist height, onto an area rug overlaying a hardwood floor. The case snapped open. It could have been snapped back together again, except that the two halves of the case are connected by two very, very thin wires - like lengths of sewing cotton. The wires were broken by the impact at the point of their soldered connection to the other half of the case. (I could, I suppose, have tried re-soldering them but that would entail finding my soldering iron, etc.). Putting electrical tape over the joint between the two halves of the case would definitely increase the chances of the timer surviving such a fall.

Cordialement,
