I have now had this Nikon camera for over a year and now can give a decent review on this Nikon camera.
Pros: Nice 38X optical zoom lens, exposure controls, easy to use, great sized rubberized hand grip, nice tilt-out rear LCD view-finder, takes SD cards, uses 4 AA batteries, has really good battery life & takes a pretty very good photo indoors [with flash] or outdoors in full daylight conditions.
Cons: It feels so cheap with so much plastic, the auto focus sometimes is a bit slow, cumbersome menu system & no mode wheel on top of the camera since there are very few manual settings this camera can do.
Overall photo quality seems quite good with this camera. Indoor photo quality with flash & outdoor photo quality in full daylight are actually quite good for me. Taking photos in low-light conditions is a bit harder with this camera & photo quality drops considerably unless you use the flash, but none of my digital cameras really never took a halfway decent low-light photo anyways. Digital video quality is great. It has wi-fi for those that use it. Overall, I am very fairly pleased with the photo & video quality this digital camera produces.
I have had similar Nikon "P series" digital cameras including Nikon P-500, P-510 and a P-520 and this L-840 from Nikon compares better against the P-500 and P-510 and equals the P-520 in photo qualities. I am rather pleased overall with this Nikon camera.
If you need a fairly basic, larger, inexpensive digital camera with a decent-sized zoom that takes pretty good photos & fairly easy to use, I think this Nikon digital camera is about the best you can find in the price range and compares very favorably to similar Canon digital cameras including the SX-510HS [30X optical zoom] and SX-520HS [42X optical zoom] in photo qualities. I gave this Nikon digital camera 5 of 5 stars because I simply think it's a great basic super-zoom bridge digital camera.
UPDATE: I have now had this Nikon L-840 for over 7 months & overall photos are pretty good still, no change there. Indoor photos are still very good and really a periodic issue with the "freezing up" of the camera and me removing and reinserting the 4 AA batteries once in a great while is the only problem that has popped up. No other issues and the camera is still working pretty good. I kept the rating at 5 stars because nothing serious has happened yet with this camera for me.
Love it so much!

Love it so much!
user manual. You need the user manual. For instance, you can't even
load the batteries without difficulty. There's no marking whatsoever on
the camera for which way the batteries go (hint: There are three
batteries in a line, then one outlier. The outlier and the middle of
the three have "+" up. The other two have "+" down).
You can download the user manual from Nikon's site.
You can also download PC software from the Nikon site. However, the
user agreement that you're required to accept says it's okay for them to
snoop and collect information from your PC. I declined, so I never got
the Nikon software installed. Windows 8.1 lets you transfer your photos
using the (supplied) USB cable without any add-on software.
Auto focusing is slooow and not always successful.
Red-eye elimination is done via post-processing in the camera.
Mode selection is done via a menu. That means it takes some time.
Big plus: Camera takes regular AA batteries, not something proprietary.
Obviously, the large zoom range is a major feature.
You can set exposure compensation to adjust the resulting picture.
It doesn't work with flash. I wanted to brighten up a flash picture,
so I re-took it with compensation. The result was identical.
They say you need a tripod for max zoom. They're right: their
stabilization isn't up to the task. I tried bracing against a
surface, but it wasn't good enough. A completely stable setup
gave me a sharp max-zoom picture, proving it was shake, not lens
quality or focus that was the problem.
The SOFT mode selection choice is misleading. It gives you a submenu
where only one of the choices is SOFT. There are useful non-soft
choices in that submenu. One of them is the very useful choice:
Backlighting. This is also misleading. If you select YES under
Backlighting, it's designed to handle high contrast range pictures. It
takes one "normal" picture and multiple temporary pictures. It merges
them and adjusts to give an adjusted contrast picture that it saves
after the "normal" one. In my test shots, it did a pretty good job.
Quality of my test pictures was fine. If you consider this to be a big
point-and-shoot camera rather than a near-SLR, you'll probably be
content with this camera.
1. The Nikon L840 is a great grab and shoot, budget camera. 2.Delivers very nice photos at lower ISO. Glamour mode and touch ups are very flattering. 3. Night shots on a tripod outside do okay. 4. The zoom on this camera is a Beast reach. You can get more. But you'll pay more with other cameras. 5. Not sure what he's framing, there a cool snap back button.to see the object... aim.. release the button...and click. 6. The select-able scene settings are useful and practical. Panorama is fun!! 7. This camera shots on the soft side. 8. And that's fine, this is where you get to learn the camera nuances. 9. We don't do a lot of post editing with PNS', we post to Instagram. The "WiFi" works fine. 10. The Nikon Coolpix L840 is a bare-bones travel zoom point-and-shoot. It has a 38x zoom lens, with a 16-megapixel sensor, and a simplistic control scheme. Not only does this camera produce decent photos and video considering its price, there's nothing cluttering the experience. Uses 4 AA batteries.
