Product Description
Product Description
The Phantom 3 Professional continues the proud tradition of DJI's Phantom series and brings several important innovations to the Phantom's rich feature set. The Phantom 3 Professional carries a fully stabilized 3-axis 4k UHD video camera for smooth, crisp videos and still photos. To allow you to see what the drone sees, DJI has engineered a new generation of their Lightbridge technology that allows 720p HD digital streaming of live video directly from the drone. You can control the camera and see video in real time as you fly and you can even share the video using the DJI Pilot app's advanced features. To aid indoor flying, the Phantom 3 Professional includes an integrated array of optical and ultrasonic sensors call Vision Positioning that allows you to fly precisely indoors without a GPS signal. The Phantom 3 Professional includes all the tried-and-true features you'd expect from a DJI drone, including GPS navigation with auto takeoffs and auto landings, intelligent high power flight battery, a built-in safety database of no fly zones, and a powerful mobile app for your iOS or Android device.
Note: DJI has locked your Phantom from being able to even start the motor if you live within a 15 mile radius of the White House. This encompasses not only D.C. but much of Prince Georges County, Arlington, Fairfax, Silver Spring, Falls Church and Montgomery County. DJI does not warn you of this prior to purchase. Outside of this 15 mile radius, the drone works great, but be aware, that if you bought it and live within the restricted zone, you will not be able to fly it, even on your own property.

The aircraft itself is extremely well built, though it is evident upon inspection that the weak part of this setup (and by weak I mean 'delicate'), is the camera and gimbal. As such, I have added two items (see list below), the Gimbal Saver and the Gimbal Guard to protect this incredible unit. I have also added propeller guards to protect the props themselves, but more importantly...people, houses, animals, etc. The power of these new motors combined with the construction of the props will result in horrific lacerations to flesh and considerable damage to wood or other soft structures. Other items to consider are a USB sync cable (1 foot), a sun visor for your remote control interface device (not listed below), a high speed (class 10, 95MB/smicroSDHC flash card, such as the Lexar noted below (32GB should suffice in most cases). I recommend getting a UHS-1/U3 flash card with 95MB/s Read. USB 3.0 wouldn't hurt if your PC or Mac is setup for it. One final item I have yet to install and test on the Phantom 3 is the camera filter set designed for the Phantom 3. There is a polarizer, an ND-2 and an ND-3 lens for different lighting conditions. Reviews are mixed on this product, but as my flight skills develop, I want the flexibility to enhance my videography and photography results based on weather, light and location conditions.

As a purely theoretical exercise I wrote a web scraper program in Python and collected a ton of web data suggesting more problems interfacing the DJI GO app with Android devices (lockups being chief among the complaints after customer service) than iOS. I normally use Android tablets, and prefer them, but agree that they are more prone to fits than iOS devices. I just can't stomach the idea of this high $$ technology dropping 400 feet out of the sky because Android pharted. As such, an iPad Mini 2 or 3 is on my list, as the larger screen size would make flying via the DJI Go app even more enjoyable, though the iPhone 6 plus is good enough for now. In my experience, which is albeit somewhat limited, iOS simply works with the phantom and the DJI GO app. I have experienced no loss of connection to the aircraft, crazy flight or calibration issues. 720p video is transmitted from the Phantom flawlessly to the iPhone 6 plus via the RC. A careful balance between line of sight and app-based flight/camera control is needed. While basic flight control is a breeze, utilizing this highly agile and advanced flying camera to produce professional quality video and images will take some time and practice.
The 4K video is simply just too much for my laptops' dual-core Intel processor, and playback is jerky when using an i5 quad core Mac. In retrospect, the Phantom 3 advanced with 1080p video recording would have been sufficient...most of the world is not ready for 4K yet, and won't be for a few years. There are multiple video recording quality modes to choose from, and I find that recording at 1080p is producing a video quality that I can barely appreciate on my current monitors. It goes without saying that the quality is excellent. Previous Phantom cameras had a much more noticeable fisheye effect. The Phantom 3 Pro does not share that history.
The remote control (RC) works flawlessly and is a delight with respect to interfacing with my iPhone 6 plus. The controls are well laid out and the handset feels well made. It takes only a few test runs at low altitudes to get the feel for flying. For the iPhone interface, I'm using the iOS DJI Go app, and the firmware version as of 08/21/2015 works flawlessly. I am a cautious new pilot. After two weeks and maybe six flights I've only been able to bring myself to fly at a max altitude of 200 feet. Without question, it can go much higher (know the max altitude allowed and don't exceed it). I have not fully tested the range of the device, but will be gradually extending my flights. I recommend finding a good location, away from airports, buildings, trees, power lines, metal structures, people and animals. A large, wide open space without significant iron deposits is ideal. People and animals will be drawn to you. Sometimes they will be concerned about the video recording capability of the aircraft. But in most cases they have never seen one up close and are simply curious.
My interest in drones has increased dramatically, and while enjoying the personal/hobby use of the Phantom, I must admit that I have investigated the commercial possibilities. Getting an FAA exemption to use the DJI Phantom (some 80% of drones having received FAA exemptions for commercial use have been DJI Phantoms) or other drone is no easy endeavor. Nevertheless, once you've piloted one of these it is difficult to deny that early movers in the drone industry will be well-positioned in future labor markets.
There are other choices out there. Yuneec comes to mind, and I will be watching them closely. Overall though I have to recommend the DJI Phantom 3 Pro 4K. I have not needed DJI customer service, and I hope I never do. There are a lot of complaints about DJI's customer engagement and repair times. As they scale up their company to meet production and R&D goals, they will have to invest some time and resources into building their customer services. They have nailed the technology, and the rest will come with time.
Buy and enjoy!

I first got exposed to hobby drone flight by my boss, who had one of the more expensive Phantom 2+ models. For my first foray into the world of GPS drones, I made the mistake of choosing the Walkera "equivalent". Boy was that ever a bad idea. It would drift all over the place, couldn't seem to reliably connect its video feed, the controls didn't always work properly, and it actually fell 100 feet because of the low-voltage cutoff malfunctioning (a well-known issue). If you're really interested, you can find my review of said Walkera drone on my profile.
This drone has *NONE* of those issues. I am quite pleased with this drone's performance. It quickly grabs GPS signals, and holds a VERY steady position in-flight. The controls are very responsive and well thought out. The controller is incredibly simple to use - only the essentials are on it. Control sticks, power button, camera & gimbal controls, return-to-home, and a couple user-mappable buttons on the bottom. Everything else is placed in the DJI mobile app. The KISS principle was definitely in effect here, and it makes it easy and comfortable to fly. You don't have to remember what 10 different switches and 20 different buttons do, because all those extra functions are neatly tucked away in the DJI mobile app.
Let's talk about the DJI mobile app. For starters, I don't think you strictly speaking need it to fly, but I really don't recommend flying without it. This drone actually includes a phone/tablet clamp built-into the controller for that reason. In order to get video feed, you need a phone or tablet plugged into the controller. Without it, you have no idea what the camera can see. There's also a LOT of functions built into the DJI app. You can configure the throttle curve, change the camera mode and quality, see the drone's GPS position in real-time (including a Google maps view), get a real-time video feed from the camera, etc.
One of the neatest functions of the app is its auto-launch button. Because the GPS is so accurate and the drone so responsive, the software can automatically spin up the rotors and launch the drone to approximately 4 feet up in the air, where it will hold position and await further input. I find this to be a lot easier than launching it myself, as the software is a lot faster and more precise than I am able to be with the throttle. Once it's in the air, it's a simple matter to provide gentle inputs to send the drone on its way, wherever I want to fly it.
The battery life on this drone is pretty much what is advertised. I get an average of 20 minutes per battery. I purchased 2 extra batteries so I could have approximately 1 hour of total flight time before having to pack up. So far, I haven't actually used all 3 in a single session, but I like having the option. Unlike the Phantom 2 batteries, these don't seem to have any issues with swelling during use, so they are really easy to put in and take out, even when they are warm from being freshly used.
The camera on this drone is quite the piece of technology. It can actually record proper 4k resolutions, and it also has the option for "consumer" 4k (which isn't 4k at all, and I have no idea why it exists). It can also record 1080p60 if 4k is a bit much for your computer to handle when editing. The video comes in very clean, and the gimble does a pretty good job of keeping things stable. It doesn't take much post-processing to fully stabilize the raw video. Do note that the drone does not have a microphone, so you will need to add your own audio. Honestly, having a microphone on the camera would be useless anyway, as all it would capture is the sound of 100 angry hornets thanks to the motors and rotors.
Since owning this drone, I have had to update the firmware twice. It's a bit time-consuming, but rather easy to do. You update the main drone (and batteries, if applicable) by putting the firmware on the camera SD card and booting the drone. You update the controller firmware by connecting it to your mobile device and using the DJI app. It's nice to know that DJI continues to support its products through firmware improvements. One of the biggest things that firmware updates deliver is updates to the list of known "no-fly" zones. These prevent you from accidentally committing a felony by flying too close to an airport, military base, etc, and is a very nice touch on DJI's part.
If you purchase this drone within the US, do note that it falls under the FAA's new UAS hobby flight restrictions. This means you are required to apply for a UAS registration here: [...]/ and keep the registration card with you at all times while flying. You will also have to attach your license number to the drone somewhere that does not require tools to access, and in clearly legible writing. You can use a permanent marker, but I personally recommend printed label tape; that way you can remove the license number if you ever decide to sell or give away the drone. If I remember correctly, the cost is currently $5, and has to be renewed every 4 years. (I got my registration fee waived because I registered at the beginning of the new program, and they were offering a 100% rebate on initial registration fees.)
