The GOOD:
Just about everything about this installment in the FF franchise is good. But I'm a very biased opinion. Don't get me wrong, despite my fan-boy excitement, I did not hang on all FF games in the past as "the best game/RPG there is". However, World of FF is one of the "good" ones.
* The graphics (while never was a make or break for me) is brilliant!! Lighting is soft and colors are subtle and fitting for the areas in the game. The animation is just so fluid. Some reviewers and critics have been hating on the chibi character style, I but I find it pleasing and a different way of imagining iconic characters from the franchise. Scenery flows from one area to the next. Character animation is seemless and makes you feel like you're watching cartoon or animated movie.
*The music is a blast from the past that's been re-mastered. For those who have played previous FF games, you'll immediately identify most of the areas BGM that you'll be traversing through. The nostalgia will hit you like a brick to the face! For those not so familiar with FF series or maybe have not played some of them, the BGM will still be pleasing as it is a comfortable composition that has roots from back in 8 and 16 bit eras. It comes together harmoniously! Even the areas that are specific to World of FF like the central hub zone has enjoyable music.
*Story is your typical RPG-esque or FF-ish story-line. Someone out to destroy the world. There's some sort of shrouded mystery about the game's protagonist. You know the drill if you're a RPG guru. If not, expect some twists and turns revolving the protagonists, their background, their goal, the antagonists, etc. :)
*The dialogue... now, I bought with the day-1 edition which came with a download code to have the original Japanese voice overs as an option so purchasers may not have this option later or may have to front some $$ on PSN to get the JVOs. But, don't be disappointed if you're only getting the English voices. They are done brilliantly!!! So many well received VAs put so much work into making the acting in this game just one of the best, if not THE BEST voice acted games I've played. The dialog moves smoothly and transitions from one speaker to another without weird awkwardness lingering between lines. The banter that goes back and forth between Lann and Reynn makes you feel like they're truly twin siblings in the way they bicker and poke fun at one another. I have not yet had an issue with pronunciation of anything spoken in the game. Usually with fantasy games and FF games that have voice overs, there's some sort of discrepancies with pronunciation of made up names or words. This has yet to happen by the 10th chapter (roughly 15 hours into the game). EVERYONE is voiced by the way. Even the townsfolk that you may or may not speak to.
*Gameplay is your typical overworld exploration, RPG random-encounter, turned based RPG battles. But what's cool about this one is that it adds a splash of Pokémon (collection of different FF themed monsters to do fighting along side the protagonist) and Kingdom Hearts (visiting different themed areas with a special side character or two to make an appearance and help move the story along. Your monsters (Mirages) level up, learn abilities a-la-FFX style sphere grid type system. They even evolve into bigger, stronger mirages. When you are stacked with your mirages, (one on top of your main characters) you can develop combo attacks such as Cross Slash and Fira (from two beasts that know Fire). The humor in the game will have you laughing along and just chuckling when you get the subtle and not so subtle references. Lots of "Dad jokes/humor"! So stele yourself!
The BAD:
With good, there are some bads, and they may be focused more in other reviews. I'll touch on a few things I've immediately noticed and some minor annoyances with the game.
*At the start of the game, I noticed some framerate and fragmentation issues with the opening scene. Now this may be because I couldn't wait for the 1.3GB update to finish before getting my feet wet. This may have been addressed and corrected with the patch. I won't know unless I start a new game save.
*Tama's speech practice is the-tiresome. After a while, you get use to it, and it isn't as prevalent (or I'm just acclimated to how Tama talks now). but at first, it's kinda the-annoying to have the- put in front of every other word.
*This may be minuet but the way in which the game is saved is a minor nuisance. You activate a save crystal, you select save, then the PS4 asks if you want to save, defaulting to No. It may just be me, but this shouldn't have to ask if I want to save, and if it does, default to Yes. There have been a few times I thought I saved, got to a boss, died, and then realized I had not saved. Ungh...
*Pretty much the only audience that will truly appreciate everything in the game other than the Pokémon collection completionist nightmare, will be FF fans. Not that this is bad, but I think that is what is inspiring a lot of the "RGAE! I HATE THIS GAME!" that have been blasted on metacritic and other review sites.
*Future DLC.... I can't gripe about this enough but I know it's the "thing to do" that developers have all moved to with just about every game that has come out in the past 5 years and that will come out in the next 5. There will undoubtedly be DLC for purchase coming in the next months. From Summons (ie. Sora from Kingdom Hearts) to new Mirages, to additional "worlds" to probably additional BGM. There's an option on the main screen menu for "Online Content" that currently isn't populated but will be soon. Ungh.... for someone who spent full price on this to play it now, and that will probably find something desirable through the DLC, this can inflate what the game Actually Costs. Not to mention, 6-12 months down the line, prices will drop, Game of the Year editions (or something like it) will happen, and all that stuff will be bundled with the game for a lower price than what was paid when the game came out. Annoying. And rather disappointing.
So, there you have it. The GOOD definitely outweigh the BAD, even the prospect of DLC. You and I don't HAVE to get it... but let's face it, we probably will.
1. Chibi. You can be a lilikin or a jiant. Chibi or normal size. Switch at will out of battle.
2. The story. It's got the best story line since ffx /x2... seriously. If you were disappointed by ffxii (sorry Ashe, but no one cared after your husband dies in the opening. It was obvious this was going to be depressing) ffxiii (movie play through for so long that I felt bad for the afro chocobo) and ffxiv (a boy band goes on the road, cooks, takes pictures, and the end was so bad), then you'll be pleasantly surprised! You're going to love the characters! The story is deep, but it maintains a level of humor that keeps you coming back for more!
3. Active? Wait? A little of column A, a little of column B? It's up to you! Same with the controls! You can set it up to have quick spells mapped, or you can FINALLY return to the CLASSIC layout. If you're not sure what that is, think FFVII thru FFX-X2. Oh, and you're not a boy band! (I really disliked FFXV ... really)
4. Pokemon? Yeah, but WAY cooler ... let's just say I enjoy riding my MARLBORO around! But seriously, the catching system is more in depth. The skill grids for each Mirage are similar to Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance (Or as I call it, Rainbow Hearts: Dream Drop Children) Btw, I love EVERY Kingdom Hearts, if you do too, you'll love this! Unlocking evolutions isn't hard, per say, but finding the stuff to do so is challenging, and FUN!
5. Tonberry, Cactaur and Moogle! It is a MUST to play the side stories. Not to catch fantasymon(tm) but because they are the FUNNIEST thing to come from square enix in ... ever?? Yeah, ever!
"...My hex life is great..." mine too?
6. Who needs a map? Well, we do, and we get one, but you don't really NEED it to find where to go in terms of story line, but it's useful to get your bearings in zone. Really useful!
7. CHOCOLATTE MART! No more running from town to town to find the latest stuff to help you progress. Chocolatte has it all, or at least she will! As you progress Chocolatte will as well in terms of items available for purchase. Thanks Chocolatte!
8. Our depressed prismarium keeper. Her voice and attitude are perfect. Like Pokemon, you can't always access the prismarium(pokecenter), but if you go over the quota of mirages you can carry, you can choose to swap it for one of the ones in your line up or send it to play with the other mirages chilling in the prismarium.
9. The only gripe I have is that I can't swap between my lilikin and jiant stacks in battle. I even the-love Tama!
Over all, one of the best final fantasy games to date. Biggs, Wedge and I give it 3 thumbs up! We're sure you will too!
