Revival
Karen and Dean Andreola were largely responsible for igniting the modern-day revival of Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education among home educators. While serving in a Christian literature mission in London, Karen began homeschooling in their tiny rented flat. In an age before the Internet, Karen asked Dean to find Miss Mason's long-out-of-print writings. Astonishingly, none could be found for sale in the whole of England. As Providence would have it, an elderly bookshop owner told Dean of the Charlotte Mason College in the Lake District. Soon after, Dean made the trip. He received on loan from their archives all 6 volumes of CM's Home Education series. Karen began reading. Experimenting through trial and error, she began adapting the principles to her home life. Upon returning to the States in 1987, the Andreolas arranged for the republication of the 6 volumes. They kept the pink books in print for 25 years.
The Gentle Art of LearningTM
In the 1990s the convenience of podcasts, videos, blogs, and FB communities did not exist. Karen often felt alone. But help was on the way. One day she received on her doorstep 77 hardbound volumes of the Parents' Review from the CM College archives. The heavy cartons came with a big international freight bill. Thus began the years of sifting through articles some over 100 years old to find golden nuggets of wisdom relevant for today. Karen shared her discoveries and experiences: in homeschool magazines, her own magazine, and as key-note speaker at conferences. Her interpretation of CM's philosophy, trademarked The Gentle Art of Learning, attracted many to the method. It gave parents the confidence to say, I can do this. Homeschool leaders privately acknowledge they first understood the ideas of CM through Karen's book, A Charlotte Mason Companion.
Freelance Reviews
From 1995 to 2014 parents looked forward to reading product reviews the Andreola family wrote for several Christian homeschool catalogs.
Mother Culture® Discovery
An obscure article, anonymously written, was published in 1892. It lay quietly undisturbed in the Parents' Review until Karen discovered it. What was the article that intrigued her? It was titled "Mother Culture". It struck a chord in Karen's heart. As she considered how it might benefit mothers today, ideas bubbled over into her own magazine in 1993. Over the next decades, she revived, expanded, and introduced Mother Culture to a new generation. Her articles, books, speaking, and catalog reviews (later, blogging and FB) created enthusiastic interest. In this way, Karen popularized Mother Culture among busy, hard-working home educators. Privately she answered hundreds of letters from stressed or discouraged moms. Heartfelt sympathy and a desire to encourage led her to choose Mother Culture ® as the hallmark of her work, ministry, and trademark. Today, the original Parents' Review article is linked as an online reference without mention or knowledge of Karen's origin-story. Yet had it not been for Karen Andreola, Mother Culture® as we understand it today might have gone undiscovered for perhaps another 100 years.

This book also emphasizes self learning (not unschooling) and ample outdoor exploration. Before reading this book, my children were scheduled 2 outdoor times per day of 1 hour. I have extended the length of time to include nature journaling.
If you believe lessons should be shorter and make personal connections with the child, this book will resonate with you. It covers how to handle main subjects, how to track progress, and how to instill long term retention through self learning/personal connections with the content or subject at hand. Hands down the best homeschool book I have purchased. I have been recommending it to all homeschooling parents I know. It’s life changing.
No bookstore, library, etc had it within an hours drive from us. I plan to donate copies to local libraries and homeschool groups.
I began to research all of the Homeschooling Approaches I could find and Charlotte Mason seemed/s to be a perfect fit for our family.
Incorporating and exercising as much as I could understand of the CM Approach, I began to see some results, but I still needed more input as to how this "thing" REALLY worked.
After purchasing this book, I can say that I am really starting to "get it" now. CM allows for so much flexibility and there are no dead ends to any (lesson) topic. CM focuses on the specialness and wonder of each child and her approach is clearly guided from the motive of their godliness, security, betterment and love.
Karen Andreola 'gets it' and I am SO grateful that she is sharing her understanding, experiences and insights in her CM research, visits to the CM college, and in rearing she and her husband's own children with this teaching methodology.
Mrs. Andreola makes me excited about teaching my children CM, which is completely out of the box, Biblically based/inclined, fun, and FAR MORE effective than any other method I have yet to come across. My children love CM and so do I.
The possibilities to your child's learning are limitless using this methodolgy. It brings the saying, "Learning is its own reward," to life. You learn that you don't need to bribe your kids with stickers/incentives, or berate them get them to study and to learn. Follow this methodolgy and they will BEG you to teach them more, as THEY begin to teach themselves.
Get this book for a better understanding of the CM approach and shake off the stress of homeschooling. I am a witness and my children are living testimonies as to how one can enable their own children to learn better and RETAIN more. All instruction and learning really do begin at home.
The only reason I rated the book 4 stars is that it is very prescriptive, and Euro-centric. If you follow the method and plan laid out in its pages to a T your children will know a lot about the ancient Greeks, British literature, and the paintings of the Monet…but they will know next to nothing of Indigenious legends, American slave narratives, or the prints of Hokusai. It is understandable that a Victorian English educator would neglect to think globally. We 21st century educators have the resources to offer our children the very best thoughts in the world (not just Europe) however. It is easy enough to round out the education advocated for in this book, and so it is still a useful tool to any homeschooling parent.

Two thumps up for Charlotte's work and intricacies of activities for children.👍👍
I think this title describes this lovely book perfectly. It is indeed not a clear guide to Charlotte Mason's ideas, but a companion to them, and the book is made up of Karen Andreola's personal ideas, and her stories of how she taught her children the "Charlotte Mason way."
Physically, this is an attractive book. It is a nice thick size, with heavy white paper, and is sprinkled with beautiful antique illustrations throughout.
The Victorian illustrations are the reader's first clue as to the author's love affair with the Victorian era. Some readers might be put off by the old fashioned tone and old fashioned ideas in this book. Others, like myself, might find it an interesting change. This is certainly the first homeschooling book I have read which includes instructions for knitting Victorian lace!
Ms. Andreola includes many other interesting tidbits towards the end of the book (after she has spent many chapters explaining the benefits of using "living" books, narration, etc)--for example she dedicates an entire chapter to playing with sand, and another on how to take your children on a pleasant picnic. I found these later chapters the most interesting, and I received some fresh ideas for our homeschool from them.
In short, this is a pleasant and helpful book to read for homeschooling mothers. It will especially appeal to those who admire not only CM's ideas on education, but the Victorian culture from which those ideas came forth. I'm not sure if this book would be a good introduction to Charlotte Mason--it is a bit rambling (in a nice way!) for that. For those wanting to know more about this method of education, I would look for websites to read first before I bought this book (there are many websites dedicated to CM out there).
But if you are a homeschooling mother who is already familiar with CM, or is already using her methods, and you are looking for a bit of inspiration, then this book is for you! I'm so glad I bought it myself, It is well worth the cost.
