The overall plot of “Top Gun” blends elements of 1980s action films with the plot structure of a sports movie, including use of montages and a rivalry between Maverick and Iceman. Interestingly, there is no trophy at TOPGUN as it’s a training school, but that wouldn’t make for as engaging a film without some form of conflict. Also, several of the actions throughout the film would have turned the Cold War hot had they happened in real life. Otherwise, the aerial footage is brilliant, using actual Navy planes in carefully choreographed flights. Paired with Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and Harold Faltermeyer’s soundtrack, the result is a high-octane spectacle.
The film’s legacy included the television series “JAG” (and, by extension, the “NCIS” spinoffs). In fact, early in the production of “JAG,” the television studio re-used much of the stock footage from “Top Gun” as it was still some of the best footage over a decade later. Even elements of Maverick’s backstory influenced that of Harmon Rabb in “JAG.” Further, a “Top Gun” sequel is due later this year, so this is a great way to add the original to your home movie collection.
The story is about a cocky, young Naval Aviator named Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), the son of a pilot shot down in Vietnam. His navigator in an F-14 is Lt. (jg based on his epilates) Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). When the top aviator on the USS Enterprise turns in his wings after a scary confrontation with a pair of MIG 18’s, Maverick is up next for advanced fighter training in Miramar, California. Regarding those MIGs, there is never a country associated with the planes, then or later in the film, although it seems clear they must be Russian.
We get a lot of macho talk when the top pilots arrive at Top Gun school including leading Top Gun gunners, Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazanski (Val Kilmer) and his “back seat driver,” Lt. Ron “Slider” Kerner (Rick Rossovich). When the boys hit the local bar and woo all the pretty ladies in their dress whites, you can understand how this movie became a huge recruiting tool for the Navy in the months that followed its release.
The bar scene includes Maverick meeting his expected conquest for the night, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis) with a vocal rendition of “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. His efforts are gently spurred but the next day Maverick discovers she is a top civilian analyst on loan to the Navy. It’s clear they will get it on, but I always thought McGillis was an odd choice for the young pilot. Yes, she’s older but that isn’t it. She just didn’t seem like the girl Tom’s character would pursue. There will be an aerial crisis during training that changes their relationship as well as Maverick’s flawed character.
Looking at this movie critically, it really falls short of a great action movie. For one thing the dialog is lame, at times cringe-worthy. What saves it are a lot of beefy, sweaty young men and some fantastic aerial photography. The later holds up well today. And did I mention the Dolby Atmos soundtrack? Speaking of soundtrack. Can anyone listen to Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” or Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” without thinking of Top Gun? Recommended.
