Rule Breaker (Unbreakable Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 213 ratings

Leilani Kealoha wants to be set free. Of family expectations. Of generations of prejudice.

Chafing at rules made by the proud Hawaiian men in her family, she yearns to discover herself and hungers to explore the world. Her adventuresome heart? Longs for something even greater, deeper.

The last thing she expects is an East Coast
haole surfer to hold the key to everything.

Mason Price is done walking his parents’ path. Done with social acceptance—with cold politics.

On a surfing quest to reinvent himself, Mase finds an exotic beauty standing on his towel. But it’s her feisty bargaining that catches him off guard. When he challenges her with a “Truth or Shots” drinking game, she unwittingly reveals more than she’d intended about herself…and him.

The raw truth stuns him: She’s suffered like he has, is lost like he is—keeps secrets like he does.

But will young love and shared situations be enough to conquer racial and cultural divides?

Lines in the sand…were meant to be crossed.

Rule Breaker is a compelling and poignant story that pushes boundaries and challenges the reader in so many ways. About love, your own prejudices, and even feelings on the environment. These authors have an innate ability to write like no one else. They deliver and craft stories that do not fit the mold and for authors like them in this world, I am grateful."~ Biblio Belles

~ Winchester Book Reviews
"I tend to avoid books that are set in Hawaii like the plague, it's a little quirk of mine and has to do with the fact that I am a born and raised Hawaii girl and am a little picky with how my islands are portrayed...as I kept turning the pages my wariness faded away and I before I knew it I felt like I was home. The sights, smells, tastes and sounds were right there in front of me..."

What a great love story. From the first sight to each was pure love. Good story all the way, with thought to feelings, heritage, right and wrong.

Rule Breaker is the second book in the Unbreakable series by Kat Bastion and Stone Bastion. The first book is called Heartbreaker and I read it earlier. I enjoyed that one, and I couldn't have been more excited.
Unfortunately, it was just not my thing this time.
The characters development was very good, but I think you should have left out the Hawaiian terms, because it was confusing to read.

Leilani Kealoha sometimes feels like she’s trapped. Trapped by tradition and trapped by circumstance. The only time she feels free is in the water. She loves the pure euphoria of catching a wave and letting it take her away from all of her troubles.

So when her brother asks her to help him recruit Mason Price to represent his custom made sailboards in competition, she has no idea that he will be the one to challenge everything she knows about life and love.

Mase is used to attention. His natural talent on the waves and golden good looks are a beacon for beach bunnies everywhere.

The trappings of professional surfing don’t appeal to him at all. He’s not in it for the money or even the girls. He’s in it because the solitude of the perfect blue-green wave helps him forget the pain of his childhood and that makes the risk worth it - even if it’s just for a moment.

But when he meets Lani, he knows instantly that he has to discover everything about this beautiful Hawaiian girl. She’s both a mystery and a wide open book. And if she would just trust in his heart, she would see that they had the power to overcome the past and any obstacle that the outside world could ever place in their path – together.

Rule Breaker is Kat and Stone’s most soulful book yet! They have imagined a world where true love can heal any hurt. Love for Mother Earth, love for each other and love for yourself.

Combine all of that with their signature sizzle and the result is a deeply satisfying romance that feeds your mind, body and soul – and you’ll simply savor every page…

YUM. Break all the rules with sexy body on cover. I really enjoyed this book.

I went into this optimistic and thankful that someone was writing a story with a Hawaiian character. I left feeling as though someone of another culture does not have the right nor the insight to speak on ethnic and political topics of which they know little to nothing about.
The synopsis mentioned "prejudices", I had hoped the writer/writers would in the very least mention prejudices on both sides, rather than painting Hawaiians as hateful racists... I assure you, our feelings are justified and earned. The atrocities against Hawai'i and it's people were never mentioned. The fact that our country was ILLEGALLY stollen and continues to be illegally occupied by the US (search “International Association of Democratic Lawyers Hawaiian Kingdom” if you don’t believe me, the fact that Americans living in Hawai'i at the time went around beating, raping (women AND children in front of their husbands/fathers) and killing to acquire the deeds to our lands, the fact that white people who came to Hawai'i called us (and STILL call us) "Mokes" which they explained at the time came from a time when they were in another country and a farmer called a donkey that was untrainable and therefore considered a dumb, worthless, animals to be "put down" because couldn't contribute anything (in other words, they are saying we are dumb, worthless and should be killed), the fact that we were banned from dancing hula, from practicing our culture and beliefs and even from speaking our language... it was illegal until the 80's, or how about the fact that we are still looked down upon by so many tourists that visit our islands and the tourist turned residents that still treat us like "Mokes". Sometimes I think that people from the mainland feel as though Hawai'i is far enough away that they can freely and openly act like the superior race because no one back home will find out.
But the author(s) didn't mention any of that, of course. Why? Well I can only assume, and my assumption is they aren't Hawaiian and therefore dont care to give an accurate view of the topic. This book was about Hawaiians, the main issue the couple had in the book was a Hawaiian family standing between them and it was written by caucasians. That's about as appropriate as a white person writing a book about black people being racist towards white people and leaving out the history of why that came to be... which is to say its not appropriate at all.
All that aside, the biggest issue with the book was the author(s) saying that Hawaiians got some of our land "back". WRONG! America has never given so much as an inch of land back to the Hawaiians. I can only assume you are referring to Homestead lands, which are OWNED by America and rented to Hawaiians… and the most important note of this, is the land they’re renting to us was stollen from us in the first place, so we’re made to rent our own land from the country who stole it from us. They allow Hawaiians to rent the land for cheap, but legally they have to charge something or Hawaiians could have a legal claim on the land AND even then they have rules and stipulations of who THEY (America) consider "Hawaiian enough" to be allowed to rent these lands and even then people are waitlisted for decades to get the land.... my own father died (at 80 years old) STILL waiting to get land.
There's responsibilities when writing of other cultures, you have a responsibility to give accurate and full information... you gave misinformation and one-sided opinions.

*****
If you got through all of that, kudos and mahalo. Here's my review of the actual book:

The characters development was very good. A lot of the time characters in books seem generic and forced, however in this book I got a clear feel for each characters personality, even the supporting characters.

I think you shouldve left out the Hawaiian terms, it was confusing to people who arent Hawaiian (which was your main demographic) and it didn't seem or feel authentic to me as a Hawaiian, it seemed more like things a tourist would overhear and try to use to "fit in".

I honestly feel as though the whole situation with her family seemed forced. It was the main issue between the couple, the drama all romance novels need to make the "happy ending" worth it, however all it took to resolve the issue was her talking to her family... if that's all it would take, she could've and should've had the discussion from the beginning.

Would I recommend this book? Being completely honest... being Hawaiians, no, because I wouldn't want these stereotypes and misinformation spread further. If I wasn't Hawaiian and didn't know any better, still probably not because I tend to only recommend books that I feel are 4 or 5 stars, books that I'll remember for years and years, and I dont feel as though this book made that sort of impression on me... maybe for the wrong reason ie misinformation and a misrepresentation of my people, but not the story itself.

A beautiful read, so much more than the cover suggested. One of the most satisfying reads for a while. I loved the way the story was slow burn which allowed Mase and Lani’s story time to build to feel their connection, the environment around them and the cultural differences. Too many books I have recently read are too short to feel any warmth/connection between main characters.

An epilogue that was used in the correct way as a wrap up to the story. A second part epilogue say 5 year on – would have been great.
