I think the people writing poor reviews need to sit down and play with this toy themselves! It would do them some good. I feel like people are just giving up on it because they don't want to slow down for a second and think about how to make it work. i feel like this is a left brain/ right brain issue.... There are some people who just don't think this way. Or don't want to be bothered doing something that they have to think about maybe?? Just because you don't get it right away you should give up??
I purchased this for a 3.5 year old. It's perfect for her! She has a wonderful time moving the pieces around and using the ribbon to get the animals to spin. If one doesn't spin she rearranges then ribbons or the pieces so they line up better to make it work. Then she winds the ribbon up and does it again.
My child is one that builds and arranges her own way vs following the story. She isn't making anything complicated but she is on the young end for this toy. She is however realizing okay in this position the kitty doesn't move. She is then problem solving to make that kitty move. She seems to have little problem making it work properly on her own. When I saw her interacting with this toy and able to do it on her own. I was so thrilled! And I love to see the joy and pride of accomplishing the task. I ordered the princess float set for her and her cousin who is also 3.
I actually enjoy playing with it myself. It kind of felt like I was getting back to basics that I haven't had to use In a while but it was fun and engaging. I'm not sure what it is about this toy. I like the colors. I like the material. Even the box seemed sturdy and nice.
In conclusion it's absolutely a great starter kit it is basic and simple and has amazing potential to go far. I would love to see the company put out some more advanced concepts too. But if you actually watch some of the videos people are posting about how they have used the set they really are imaginative. These kids are clearly thinking outside the box to create. Something us adults don't get to enjoy enough of today This set was created to draw interest and create fun imaginative play using scientific concepts not to make them into Ivy League engineers.
I think the best part about Goldie Blox isn't the toy at all. It's their successful marketing campaign to redefine girl play. While one could say that the recent girl builder movement started with Lego Friends (which actually received backlash about some of the stereotypes they perpetuated), suddenly building stuff is cool for girls, and parents are rethinking the princess and Barbie paradigm. My suggestion for parents: this might be a fun toy for your little girl, but make sure you get other more awesome engineering and building toys. MagnaTiles. TinkerToys (the wood ones are much cooler than the plastic). Marble runs. Lincoln logs. Twig blocks. Unit blocks. SnapCircuits. Dominoes. Let this be the beginning of a toybox full of building and engineering toys, not an isolated toy among an army of Disney characters.
