Product Description
Amazon.com
With its increased capacity, the RIKON 70-100 12-by-16-Inch Mini Lathe gives you the opportunity to do more with less space. This powerful, smooth-running lathe offers unique features like a 12-position index head for accurate pattern work, easy access for quick speed changes, a convenient tool holder, and the ability to add multiple extensions.
Largest Mini Lathe in the IndustryThe RIKON Mini Lathe features the largest capacity in the industry, and with options for multiple extensions, it allows you to work with larger pieces. With 12 inches over the bed and 16 inches between centers, the RIKON Mini Lathe gives you space to do your work while maintaining a low profile on your workbench.
Change Speeds Quickly and Easily
With the easy-access speed change feature, the Mini Lathe lets you quickly change speeds--from 430 to 810, 1,230, 1,810, 2,670, and 3,900. An access cover opens up to give you room to adjust the drive belt, and it features a handy chart for determining spindle speed. A conveniently located and easy-to-use locking arm and tension-release lever are also used when adjusting the speed.
Indexing Head for Detail Work
Unique to the RIKON Mini lathe, a 12-position indexing head allows you to lock the work piece in multiple positions for improved accuracy in detail work. You can easily perform detailed pattern work on projects such as straight fluting, grooving, drilling, layout, and more. The 12-position indexing head also allows the spindle to be locked in place for easy removal of face plates, chucks, and other accessories.
Self-Ejecting Tail Stock Saves Time
Since you won't need to use the knock-out bar to remove the center, you can save time and reduce frustration with the RIKON Mini Lathe self-ejecting tail stock. With a ram that can travel up to 2-1/2 inches, the tail stock can also be moved along the lathe bed by loosening the locking lever and then relocking it in the desired position.
User-Friendly Features Offer Convenience
Several convenient features make the RIKON Mini Lathe easy to use, such as a flip-up handle for mobility, a nylon face plate washer that prevents accessories from sticking to the spindle, and a tool holder near the back of the machine that gives you easy access to your centers and knockout bars.
Accessory Options for Versatility
With several accessories available to customize the RIKON Mini Lathe, you can tailor this machine to fit your needs. You have the ability to add multiple extensions, use differently sized tool rests and face plates, and you can mount the RIKON to a stand that adjusts to your working height.

Everything looked great and I'm thinking to myself "I'm feeling pretty good about getting this lathe vs. the jet 12x20" but then I see that the manual and the tool rest are missing (what a bummer, I had wood ready to turn and all)! So, Im not concerned about the manual but a tool rest would have been great!
I really hope to update this post with good info about Rikon's customer service and I hope they correct the problem very fast (Im thinking 5 star product once I get as chance to use it). Until then, I can't even get started and therefore have no review about how well it works. Otherwise, spurs line up perfect (and I mean PERFECT), motor runs smooth and quiet and everything looks/feels great.
UPDATE: I received the 8" tool rest and the manual within 4 days. In the meantime I had bought a curved tool rest and turned two bowls which verified my initial thought about this lathe ... it's fantastic, 5 stars all the way. The locking arm that holds the tool rest is machined a bit loose however it has not stripped out and I don't think it will anytime soon. All in all this is a well made machine for the money and it turns out Rikon customer service is very good also.
It was bigger then I expected, the price was great, the range of speed was good, and the power is pretty awesome too.
My complaint is that the way you change speeds is by moving the motor up and loosening the pulley, moving the belt up or down the pulley's lowering the motor to re tighten the pulley and secure. It takes enough time to notice and if you're doing a lot of changing gets tedious. However, if what you are looking for is a wide range of good specs, this is the biggest inconvenience I found with the design of the lathe itself and everything else works just perfect.
Other complaints not having to do with the design of the product:
The shipping box I received it in had holes and had been thrown and dropped, I had read previous complaints that this happens and sure enough the problem still exists. When I received the box, it was delivered upside down with no indication on which side was up, so my lathe was sitting feet up and resting on the plastic cover that covers the pulleys (now the cover is bent) but besides that, the lathe was so heavy and sturdy that I plugged it in and it ran perfect first try. just know that the shipping company doesn't care to lug your stuff around for you.
It is now July 5th, and as of yet, I have not received anything from RIKON. I would have to say that as of right now, no matter how happy I may end up being with the lathe, I WILL NEVER buy another tool from RIKON.
I received the lathe earlier than expected which was nice. it seems well built, material wise. I turned a quick piece and i regret not having a knob or variable speed dial. I left the belt at the fastest setting. This is MT 2 and everything seems smooth out of the box.
There are some weird assembly defects. See attached pictures. I will update you after I turn a few batches of pieces. The belt door was bent. A screw wasnt set straight. The points are off by a hair.
