Fast for streaming, remote can't control TV power or volume (plus potential remote solution)

Fast for streaming, remote can't control TV power or volume (plus potential remote solution)
For years we've been a TiVo household, but that is changing in the face of increased streaming options, and currently our only tie to regular old cable TV is live sports (and we're not sports nuts, so the cord cutting is probably sooner rather than later). When looking for a non-TiVo streaming solution, we wanted something that was content-provider neutral, which eliminated the Fire and to a lesser degree Chromecast. We took the plunge on Roku, starting small with the new stick.First and foremost, this thing is speedy. The screen and apps are very responsive, and navigation is intuitive. The breadth of streaming support is astonishing.Initially I was going to use the TVs USB port to provide power to the device, but unfortunately what that means is that every time you turn your TV off the stick goes off, and every time you turn your TV on the stick has to boot up. It's not a huge delay, but it's a friggin' delay, so that was a no go for us.Now for the big con - the remote can't control even basic TV functions, like power and volume. As far as I can tell, *none* of the Roku models have remotes that can do this. So, if you have a TV with a Roku, by definition you now need two remotes. They don't even offer a more functional remote as an extra-cost option. What the hell?I went looking for consolidated remote solutions, and none of them worked for us (price, complexity, functionality, etc), and very few seem to support the RF protocol used by Roku. I ended up finding a Kickstarter for a product called the Sideclick, which is an snap-on, add-on for the standard Roku remotes that adds TV control. On top of that ridiculous omission by Roku, the remote also has hard-coded buttons for services selected by Roku (not you). So even if you don't use Sling or Rdio or Google Play, there are permanent buttons for them on your remote, taking up real estate (and NOT controlling your TV).The lack of a 'premium' remote that also controls the TV on any of the Roku models, and the pre-selected, hard-coded remote buttons for services I may or may not use are close to deal-killers for me, because it indicates that Roku is not designing their products for me. Note to Roku if you ever read this, I (and many, many others, based on my research) would happily pay you for a 'premium' remote with the following characteristics:1. Ability to control basic TV functions (on/off, volume)2. No hardcoded service buttons (or have them programmable by the owner)3. KeyboardAs it stands, the Roku stick is a solid device with an overly simplistic and marketing-focused remote. I was stuck between 3 and 4 stars because to me the inability to have an out-of-the-box single remote solution is ridiculous, but you can temper that criticism with the fact that since I found the Sideclick snap-on remote enhancement I've already ordered my second Roku.Picture of remote with Sideclick is attached.

Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2016
This was the first streaming device I've ever tried so I can't compare to other devices. Also notable is that I've hadn't had cable service since 2011 ever since my dispute with Time Warner Cable. Incidentally, my building only has TWC as a provider so I had no choice but to live cable-free, and OTA antennas didn't pick up signal in my unit.
With that being said, this device has successfully turned me into a vegetable of the couch variety. I almost regret getting one of these, as I've lived TV free for so many years and I'm on a mad dash to catch up to the last few years.
But this review shouldn't be about me, it should be about the device, so here are my thoughts:
    Pros:
    1) Amazon Prime had this on my doorstep 3 hours after placing the order. No additional charge. (A++)
    2) Virtually plug-and-play, with the exemption of the initial setup. Once this is done, you can plug into any HDMI outlet around the house and it'll be plug and play hereafter. (A++)
    3) Free trials of Showtime, HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime... (A++)
    4) Zero lag in menus, zero lag while streaming 1080p (but to be fair, my home network is 75 mbps up and down). However, I noticed after running network speed apps that the Roku Stick caps at 24 mbps. This probably was done intentionally, as there is no lag or buffering. (A++)
    5) The companion app for my phone works flawlessly, and really shines when needing to type to search, or even when signing up for new apps. Unfortunately, the app does not work during the initial setup, which is when the most typing is needed. Still a good app. (A++)
    6) So far, there's so much content that I'm still overwhelmed. (A++)

    Cons
    1) The supplied remote that connects to the Roku stick often disconnects. I've read that this is due to interference between the wifi band and the remote. (D-)
    2) The batteries that came with the remote lasted about 3 weeks. I hope that the supplied batteries were just poor, and the new set I put in will last much longer. (C-)
    3) Casting from PC to Roku... I have yet to figure this out. Instructions online make it seem simple enough, but so far, no success. (C+)

That's about it so far. It's been about a month now, and I've started to grow roots into the couch, so I guess it's doing what it's supposed to.
Again, I can't compare this with any other device out there, but I do know that it really can't get much better.

I purchased my first Roku Streaming Stick (actually first streaming stick ever) for use with our bedroom TV. I usually avoid purchasing "new" products until I do my research and am confident the bugs have been worked out but thought I would take a chance with the
this $50 stick. Upon receipt, I plugged the stick into the HDMI port, did the install, and was surprised to see it worked great and provided smooth uninterrupted streaming of all the channels I tried. Great, I thought, at this price I will purchase another one for our main family room TV.

Fast forward one week later and I received my second stick. Plugged it into the downstairs TV (which is actually closer to my Asus RT-AC68W 1900 Mbps router), did the install, linked to my Roku account, and waited for the same great results I had with the first one. Lo and behold the streaming was much slower and the remote did not work consistently. I disconnected and reconnected power, removed and replaced remote batteries but still had no better results.

I dd notice in the settings menu that the Roku was indicating poor signal strength. Very frustrating since this TV is actually closer to my router in distance. Thinking I had a "bad" Roku stick I went on their website for support/advice before I sent it back to Amazon. I noticed they suggested ordering a (free) HDMI extender cable if signal strength was poor. I figured I could give it another chance before sending back so I ordered the extender cable. I received the extender in a few short days and plugged it into my Roku and TV. Voila, the signal strength was much better and the device worked as well as the first one.

Our upstairs (Vizio) TV's HDMI port is configured so that the Roku sticks out perpendicular (away from) to the TV. With the downstairs (Samsung) TV the Roku stick was a tighter fit and actually sat parallel to the back of the TV, close to the cabinet and to other cables. The extender cable enabled the Roku to stick out further, past the TV and probably allowed greater room for the antenna.

If you are having issues with poor signal strength and/or inconsistent remote pairing, you may want to try this extender cable first before giving up or trying a replacement.

Perhaps Roku should just ship these with every stick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Updated review
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2016
UPDATE: Since discovering how easy it is to add extra channels including the live UK ones, I've now given this 5 stars to reflect how good a product it really is. I also have an Amazon Firestick on the other TV but if you're hovering between them, I'd go for the Roku as its much this easier to add extra channels and so far, everything I've watched is in HD. In fact, I haven't bothered sorting out the cables in the loft so the TV in the Sunroom is just using the Roku stick for now, which is more than adequate for our needs.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
I've given this 3 stars but that's because it doesn't do what I want it to. As a streaming device, it works perfectly and is straightforward to install and use. So, really, worth 5 stars in that respect.
My difficulty is that despite being told by Roku staff in the UK that I will be able to pick up UK channels in the Republc of Ireland, it won't pick them up. It's frustrating because the cheaper Amazon Fire stick that I've got will pick up the Irish & UK channels, so I don't know why the Roku won't. I don't write many reviews but thought it worth adding one here as there weren't any other reviews when I purchased this device. It picks up all the US offerings and lots of other international channels in India and Australia so it's doubly frustrating not getting any free UK stuff even though we're so close to the UK. Can't even blame Brexit for this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indian Buyers Please read.... Before buying
Reviewed in India on June 21, 2016
This review is for indian users who intend to buy .
This is a US based streaming service and sole purpose was to be used in US only , so if you're here in India it does come with limitations (infact lots) .
This device works well if you know how to use VPN and DNS lookup to avoid the geo-location restrictions, It has the widest free to stream channels online , Roku does not force any content to us unlike appletv , amazon fire or choromecast.
If intending to use as DLNA device only it supports only mp4, .mkv only not .avi since there is lot of containers in avi .
Next the remote app is amazing but cant be downloaded from playstore or app store since the device is not officially available in India, android users can download the apk file from internet , apple users should have a US store account otherwise cant download .
If you setup this device using a US ip address you can add all the channels and see free content too..
Lastly you have to buy subscription for Hulu, netflix, HBO GO and other pay-per-view channels(this is extra).
The running cost for using this device is high for users in living in India so please be very clear in what way you intend to use this device than be disappointed later and thrashing as waste product in amazon.in
How I use this is , I have a paid VPN service so overcame the geo-restrictions roku puts , plus i downloaded the .apk from internet and from app store using a US itunes account.
Lots of guides are available to help if you're interested in using this device
I bought from amazon.in(Gadgets and Accesories) true genuine US import so it has a US power adapter .very reliable seller, I hope this clarifies a lot about this product for Indian users.
P.S - Roku stick is lot cheaper in US so if you have friends or family there you can get too, since it wont have warranty even if you from gadget and accesories
