What can you do with too many pumpkins?

Rebecca Estelle has hated pumpkins ever since she was a girl when pumpkins were often the only food her family had. When an enormous pumpkin falls off a truck and smashes in her yard, she shovels dirt over the pieces and forgets about them. But those slimy pumpkin smithereens sprout up in autumn, and Rebecca Estelle finds a sea of pumpkins in her garden.

A heartwarming classic for more than twenty years, this story shows what happens when one thrifty gardener figures out how to make other people happy with the squash she can't stomach.

Filled with colorful illustrations from a season of gardening, this is a perfect book for young gardeners and pumpkin lovers. Its wonderful lesson about helping others can be appreciated in the classroom or at home.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Rebecca Estelle hates pumpkins. "What's not to like?" you may be thinking. Certainly, pumpkins are benign, as far as gourds go, and they make for delicious pies. But if you were forced to eat only pumpkins (baked, steamed, boiled, stewed, mashed, and rotten), you might agree with Rebecca, who was so poor as a child that she could only afford to eat the unrelentingly orange squash.

One day, years and years later, white-haired Rebecca was busy not eating pumpkins when--SPLAT--a giant pumpkin fell off an overloaded truck and smashed into her yard. She buried the mess so she wouldn't have to look at it, and, as you might imagine, she witnessed a bumper crop the following fall. In
Too Many Pumpkins, a 1996 American Bookseller "Pick of the Lists," Linda White (who based the book on her own pumpkin-eating aunt Becky) reveals how swallowing one's personal (pumpkin) prejudices can end up benefiting a whole community. Illustrator Megan Lloyd creates spunky, detail-rich drawings that are sure to hold up to the scrutiny of youngsters everywhere. This is an ideal Halloween-time book for those who want to bypass ghouls and goblins (or any actual mention of Halloween) and focus on ... pumpkins! (Ages 4 to 8)" —Amazon.com Review

"Golden autumn hues cast their warm glow throughout this humorous harvest tale. Rebecca Estelle, having survived on various pumpkin dishes during her poor childhood, hates them so much that when a pumpkin accidentally falls into her yard, she shovels dirt over it so she won't have to see or think about it again. In spite of all her efforts to the contrary, she is "rewarded" with a yard full of bright orange globes the following fall.
Not willing to let the windfall go to waste, she once again prepares the dishes she detested as a child, carves jack-o-lanterns from the remaining pile, and then thoroughly enjoys the fellowship of her neighbors lured by the glow of the mischievous carvings. And, of course, Rebecca Estelle saves seeds for next year's planting. Lloyd snuggles White's text into her rich watercolor-and-pen illustrations. Nature's determined bounty spills from formal borders and is tinged with just the right touch of realism to contrast with the cartoonlike Rebecca Estelle and her feline companion. The vocabulary and sentence structure calls for solid independent readers, but the large horizontal format packed with engaging fun makes this title an ideal harvest/Halloween read-aloud."School Library Journal

It is sometimes difficult to tell whether a book is going to have long paragraphs that could lose the attention of little ones, or have so few words that it is mostly a book of pictures. This is a wonderful blend of beautifully illustrated pages and wording to convey the message. If your school uses levels for children's books, it is listed as K-3 Interest level. Reading level is listed as Grade Equivalent 3.9, DRA Level 20, and Guided Reading Level: L. My 2nd grade granddaughter can read this book to me, but reading levels vary within each grade level. I included photos just to give you an idea. A charming story of Rebecca Estelle's journey through the season as she ignores the plants and refuses to tend to them in hopes that they will die. When she discovers her yard is overtaken with pumpkins, we see her kindness emerge. She decides "there are folks crazy enough to like them." In the end the town gathers and enjoys her pumpkin baked goods and she saves seeds for the next planting. Love this book!

What a super fun book!! The illustrations are so bright and lively and the story gave us a good talk about . . .
the woman's industriousness, using past hardship to bless others, the blessing that came to her to help others and the blessing she was to others (community), or how we would have gotten the people to come to our house for pumpkin treats (Would be carve pumpkins like the lady or something else)? Glad I purchased!

Wonderfully written & illustrated! This book was recommended on a podcast, so I decided to purchase it for my kids. We love it! Teaches the reader that good can come from bad things that happen to us & that we can in turn bless others.

4 1/2 yr old loved the colorful, imaginative story. A tad long, but kept her attention. Pretty book

It’s a paperback book about growing pumpkins. A familiar and classic story for fall to get the attention of children and to create a love for reading and a story they will want to read over and over.

We don’t celebrate Halloween. But we want something to read that’s festive and fun for the autumn season. This is perfect! It’s such a fun story with a heartwarming end. This is one that will be a classic!! Timeless. Beautiful illustrations. The kids loved it! Very entertaining. No mention of Halloween at all. It also has good science content (seeds growing) and pro-social skills.
This copy of it is a good size and sturdy, quality pages and binding. I’m very pleased!!
We read as a read aloud to the whole family. We have a 6 year old and a 2 year old. They both loved it! The 2 year old likes finding the cat on every page. The 6 year old liked lithe story’s plot. It’s one we will read for years to come. They won’t outgrow it anytime soon.

My 4 year old continually borrowed this book from the library, so we bought it. She has it nearly memorized. Quite a feat, in my mind. While I like the story and the character arc. Oh yes, ol' Rebecca Estelle experiences some growth in this children's book that spans more than a years time. Even after the 80th reading, I still feel a tug on my heart strings at the end. I also like the set up for Rebecca's original disdain for pumpkins. The writing is crisp and clean.

It's only nearly memorized because I cannot stand to read Rebecca's name as often as it appears. She lives alone- er.. with her cat. I don't need to continually call her by her whole name. And I don't Linda, you hear me!?

This children's book was a family favourite for years, but when it finally fell to pieces from being read so many times, we had to throw it away. I was delighted to find the same edition at Amazon, and have added it back into our family library.
Beautiful artwork, and delightful little story. I highly recommend it.
