FIRST thing to note is that this is a DIRECTIONAL antenna with a 70-degree beam... meaning it needs to be pointed in the direction of the station towers you're trying to receive. All of my towers broadcast off the same hilltop (within 10mi), so this met my needs perfectly. If your towers broadcast from different areas altogether, then you'd either need to re-point this antenna to capture the corresponding station when you want to access it -or- you'd need to purchase TWO of these (one pointing one way, the other pointing another way) -or- you'd need to get a multi-directional antenna (which may or may not have enough "oomph" to get them all anyway). Directional antennas will always get you better pickup in the direction they're being pointed when compared next to a multi-directional antenna.
SECOND thing to note is when being used indoors - expect an approximately 50% range drop from the advertised range (Antennas Direct even states this on their website). For whatever reason - Amazon advertises this as a 50mi antenna when the box states it as a 35mi antenna... so being used indoors, you should consider this a 15-17mi range antenna. This is completely normal as being placed on a table-top indoors is much different than being strapped 10-20ft up, outside, on a roof. Just something to consider and understand prior to purchase.
Just to recap... the Micron-XG is an excellent antenna if used PROPERLY. If your stations all broadcast from within the same 70-degree beam pattern this antenna captures from, then it should work MUCH better indoors when compared next to any multi-directional antenna. If you have stations broadcasting from different areas however, then please consider the options I listed above prior to purchase.
Every antenna I have ever bought in the past (even though they were analog) went back to the store because they grossly underperformed. It has been years since I bought an antenna, and so, even with digital TV, I was a little skeptical. Setting it up where I wanted it to go served no issue whatsoever. I plugged in the antenna, positioned it with the help of the converter box, and found the ideal position. The picture is comparable to that of satellite, and I am really impressed. Not only can I watch the channels I want to watch, but I can also record any program with the best of quality. And I'm sure that with every other model (the ones that capture signals from over 65 miles), it only gets better.
This is a product I highly recommend.
I came home and set the thing up which is easy to do and I pointed it in the direction of the station towers and performed a channel scan. Even without an amplifier, this thing pulled in 87 channels, many of which were crystal clear, HD channels! Sure a lot of them were in different languages other than english, but I have a large amount of english language channels including most of the major local networks such as KTLA, KNBC-LA and KCBS-LA. The local channels were displaying in perfect clarity!
I went a step further and configured my Home Theatre PC to use an HDHomerun TV Tuner along with XBMC installed. The HDHomerun add-on for XBMC worked even better than the scan I did with my HDTV's channel scan. With the HDHomerun add-on's channel scan, I pulled in 95 channels, even KCOP and KTTV which were unavailable before. I bought an RCA DTV amplifier and did a rescan on my HDHomerun and I got 105 channels! This time, many of the channels with somewhat average signal strength were listed with a much higher signal rating. The graphic representation of signal strength went from yellow to green.
Even without the amplifier, I found this product's performance to be excellent considering my distance from the towers. Combined with an amplifier, you should be able to exceed the listed range of 25 miles by at least 10 miles easily. Keep in mind that this all depends on whether or not you have huge buildings or mountains between your home and the station towers. I live in a large apartment complex and my unit is in the interior of the complex thus, there is a barrier between me and the station towers. But that barrier could not stop this antenna from pulling in 105 channels. With the free OTA channels I get from this product, Netflix, Hulu-Plus and the XBMC application on my HTPC, I was able to cancel my DirectTV service with fear of missing out on my favorite shows. The service I was getting from DirectTV cost me $80.00 a month and was only in Standard Definition! What a rip off!!!
My total monthly bill has now been reduced by $80.00 and I'll never use Cable or DirectTV for TV again! Cheers to all who have successfully "cut the cord"
Great Product.
