This is a good pack of shop towels. These are much better than the shop rags that I buy at auto stores for garage cleanups. My typical shop rags are only good for oil changes: I would never touch something valuable with a shop rag--they're just for cleaning messes.
These huck towels are pretty nice though. They're bigger than a shop rag (16" x 25") and the quality is much nicer. Not that I'd want to use them on my body, but they're perfectly suitable for drying our cars & motorcycles. They stay together pretty well and don't generate any lint that I can detect.
You get a pack of twelve and the bundle is actually pretty big. They all have nice square corners, unlike my shop rags that were puckered at the corners even when they were brand new. You can also pick from an assortment of colors. I haven't tested these for color-fastness yet, but I'd be nervous about the brighter colors (fuchsia or orange). I've accidentally had one of my red shop rags sneak into a load of laundry with other clothes, and it wasn't pretty. The color is already faded enough on these blue towels that I wouldn't panic if one went through the wash.
EDIT (1/3/11): We just returned from a four day camping trip and I forgot to pack enough dish towels. I discovered that these towels work great in the kitchen as dish towels or tea towels. I don't think I'd want to mix their use though: either use them as shop towels or kitchen towels, but not both. The garage grease stains don't come completely out in the wash, so I wouldn't want to use those greasy towels to dry dishes.
EDIT II (4/24/12): I just bought another pack of these to use as bar towels at my office parties. We have a lot of social functions at work and nobody seems to have any towels to tidy things up. These are perfect for wiping up all the drippy water that comes off cans and bottles when they come out of the cooler. So what's it been now, almost 18 months since I got the first pack of these? They've held up well and I like them well enough to want more. Two thumbs up.
EDIT III (December '12): I bought another pack of these for a Christmas party. I bought them in green this time. The green color is nice, kind of an emerald green. The quality of the towels isn't as good as the first set of blue ones though. These definitely look and feel like shop rags. I tied a few of these to the hot handles of chafing dishes and they were OK. I also used some as bar towels. My wife wouldn't let me use these in the kitchen though; she said they looked too cheap and rough for kitchen towels.
I like this towel for general kitchen duties. Large and absorbent and easy to get clean with a simple washing. Durability is excellent and at the cost easy to throwaway when they become too stained or damaged. Have ordered this rag three times.
Mind you - spray treat with stain remover if you wipe coffee or wine or anything that stains asap. These bleach well but do stain so don't rely on bleach to turn back white if you don't rinse or soap it quickly. I keep a bucket of oxy clean or bleach water and throw in if I wipe a stain. They last for a long time - most get ruined as my husbands grabs them for stains instead of the bag I keep of old ones. The only complaint is really they get so inconsistent in size and every order now will have one or two so off that I wonder if I threw an old one in the wash with the new ones.
I have used the blue ones but I find white are just easier for keeping nice, clients come in the kitchen and I don't know if they think surgical towels are abnormal for bakers but they also just are easiest to deal with cleaning.
Star removed for inconsistent and getting worse size and not quality. The price is creeping up and I'm starting to look for other sources (hint...)
PROS
- absorbent
- dry quickly
- durable
- no fuzz/shedding
- fun color options
CONS?
- aesthetics... They aren't "pretty" towels necessarily. These are made to work.
I can't say anything regarding the "surgical" description but for kitchen and household use, I highly recommend these.
I would avoid drying them. Only 1 got badly damaged ( thread came out )
Besides that they are nice, not super thick but look like quality
Top reviews from other countries
The weave looks different and they are thinner. After just 1 wash, they all came out crinkled and are very difficult to use.
Others reviews about this issue have already provided pictures of the rags in this state, and mine look the same.
No I am afraid to order surgical "Huck" towels from anywhere else as most seem to have the same problem?
