“Lutz develops riveting suspense by slowly revealing the events that first sent Tanya/Amelia on the run, while pouring threats on her gritty heroine’s increasingly tenuous bids at survival. Binge-worthy fare, especially for those drawn to strong female protagonists” (Booklist, starred review).

From the author of the
New York Times bestselling Spellman Files series, Lisa Lutz’s latest blistering thriller is about a woman who creates and sheds new identities as she crisscrosses the country to escape her past: you’ll want to buckle up for the ride!

In case you were wondering, I didn’t do it. I didn’t have anything to do with Frank’s death. I don’t have an alibi, so you’ll have to take my word for it...

Forty-eight hours after leaving her husband’s body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. It’s not the first time.

She meets Blue, a female bartender who recognizes the hunted look in a fugitive’s eyes and offers her a place to stay. With dwindling choices, Tanya-now-Amelia accepts. An uneasy―and dangerous―alliance is born.

It’s
almost impossible to live off the grid today, but Amelia-now-Debra and Blue have the courage, the ingenuity, and the desperation, to try. Hopscotching from city to city, Debra especially is chased by a very dark secret…can she outrun her past?

With heart-stopping escapes and devious deceptions,
The Passenger is an amazing psychological thriller about defining yourself while you pursue your path to survival. One thing is certain: the ride will leave you breathless.

Best New Books of March 2016 Select by GoodReads * LitHub.com * Bustle.com

“At the outset of
The Passenger, Lutz's narrator knows that her only chance for freedom is to lose herself, and thus, leaving one dead man behind, she hits the diamond lane of America—and storytelling—with a carload of identities, including the reader, who is carried along as both passenger and pursuer. This tenacious and resourceful heroine will keep you chasing, rooting, lip-biting, and above all reading until you reach the ending you never saw coming. My advice: buckle up.”
—Tim Johnston, New York Times Bestselling Author of Descent

"A sharp, clever, and utterly compelling thriller about a woman running from the mistakes and misfortunes of her past. Terrific."
—Chris Pavone, New York Times Bestselling author of The Expats and The Accident

"With whip-smart writing and a breakneck pace,
The Passenger's clever plot twists and sharp characters are sure to keep you guessing long into the night, hoping against hope that its complex protagonist isn't nearly as guilty as she seems."
—Kim McCreight, New York Times Bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia

“[Lisa Lutz] steps smartly out of her comfort zoneto write a dead-serious thriller (with a funny bone).”
New York Times Book Review

“The kind of suspenseful, character-driven mystery the term “page-turner” was coined for”
Boston Globe, Best Books of Summer 2016 select

The Passenger is a maze of plot twists and turns that you won't see coming.”
Chicago Tribune

“[A] dark, readable, intelligent novel…Lutz belongs in a conversation with writers like Gillian Flynn, George Pelecanos and Megan Abbott.”
USA Today

"Binge-worthy fare, especially for those drawn to strong female protagonists."
Booklist (starred review)

“When the answers finally come, they are juicy, complex, and unexpected. The satisfying conclusion will leave readers rethinking everything and immediately turning back to the first page to start again. Psychological suspense lovers will tear through this thriller, a new direction for best seller Lutz (
How To Start a Fire). Fans of her beloved ‘Spellman Files’ series will have high expectations, and if they are open to a new genre and a darker energy and intensity, they will find her trademark independent narrator, smart writing, and rapid pace delivered here.”
Library Journal (starred review)

“Lutz's pacing is excellent, and the interior monologue captures what it would be like not to have a name or, even worse, a valid ID. Lutz provides some great suggestions for going on the lam (a lot of hair dye and car switching is involved), but at its core, this is a novel about identity: a slippery notion which depends upon both how the world sees us and how we see ourselves.”
Kirkus Reviews

“Lutz’s complex web of finely honed characters will keep readers turning the pages.”
Publishers Weekly

“With
The Passenger [Lutz] has re-introduced herself as a more serious—and intriguing—author of crime fiction.”
Washington Post

“Lisa Lutz is a brilliant writer. You need to read all of her books, but read
The Passenger first.”
The Irish Times

“In her thrilling standalone,
The Passenger, Lisa Lutz keeps the pace blistering without sacrificing characterization.”
Shelf Awareness (starred review)

“If your idea of fun involves a dark, twisty noir about a woman on the lam—stealing cars, dying her hair in seedy motel rooms, and constantly changing her name—Lisa Lutz’s
The Passenger is the book you need. Lutz’s turn at the road novel raises all kinds of vexing questions about who we are and who we belong to as her heroine tries to evade her shadowy past.”

Lisa Lutz’s The Passenger kicks off with such a great opening that it’s almost a relief when the rest of the book lives up to it. It’s the story of a woman named…well, honestly, that’s complicated, given how many names she has over the course of this book. So let’s just say that it’s the story of a woman whose husband falls down the stairs and dies in a genuine accident. But she’s a) not that upset to see him go, b) worried that people might think she did it, and most importantly, c) seems awfully nervous for the police to go digging around. So she packs up and hits the road, calls a mysterious benefactor, and gets a new identity. And that goes well…for a few pages, at least.

Honestly, that’s about all I want to say about The Passenger, which is one of those books that are far more fun to read if you don’t know anything about them. Suffice to say, our heroine is on the move, constantly shifting identities based on the events around her, and only gradually revealing to us, the readers, exactly why she’s on the run in the first place. Even better, Lutz constantly raises the tension and the stakes, with dangerous run-ins, suspicious friends, and a kindred spirit who might be using her for nefarious means. It’s a gloriously twisty plot, one that uses every twist for maximum impact, whether to increase our unease or to stun with revelations.

But even better is our heroine, a complicated figure who lives comfortably in a world between villainy and heroism. Not a good person by any means, Lutz’s heroine also isn’t the antihero we might suspect; she’s a survivor, through and through, and as we learn more about her, her actions become more and more understandable. Her narration and pragmatic worldview make for a great aspect of the book, and the perfect companion for the twisty plot. The result is a great read, especially for the summer; it’s light but compelling, twisty but never unfair, dark but never horrific – in short, it’s a complete blast for anyone wanting a great thriller.

As is usual I received this book free for the purpose of review, this time from "Shelf Awareness." Despite that abundant kindness, I'm utterly honest in my assessment.

The book describes itself as a thriller but I'm not completely sold on that assignment of genre. Really it's more of a personal/crime drama. Our protagonist gets into some pretty tight spots and has to do absolutely anything she can to get out of them including... well, crime.

To the positive, the book is smoothly and well written. The text drips off the page like soft cream and you can get lost in the prose after only a few pages. The pacing is fast and pulls you along very steadily but never really reaches any huge crescendo. As you read you're immediately plunged into a cloud of mystery on the very first page that's not entirely resolved until very nearly the end.

To the negative, many of the plot-level details were rather implausible. Our deliciously strong protagonist pulls herself out of tighter and tighter spots until you can't quite believe that any of it was possible. It is only the author's writing skill that makes this palatable. In the hands of a lesser wordsmith the plot would have fallen to pieces like overcooked fish. As it stands, you take the gravy along with the lumps and never mind a bit.

In summary, this is a book for readers who like a strong and clearly empowered female protagonist who gets the job done but doesn't feel hindered by the saddle of 100% credibility. "The Passenger" is a book to be gobbled down in one delicious bite on a cold winter day off. It's not going to win any literary awards but it will keep you mentally engaged and interested in what's going to happen on the next page.

Terrific book. It works as a thriller, a character study (of a number of characters, all wrapped up in one), and as a how-to book about how to get lost in America by going off the grid. Ok, I may be exaggerating about the last one, but the first two are definitely true. The book is smart, exciting, fast paced (though it also has depth), with bits of dark humor sprinkled throughout.

I won't go into the plot since (a) you can get that from other reviews, and (2), it is way better to discover it for yourself, with the help of the author, and the skilled way she slowly clues you in as to the reason for the main character's fears and caution.

I've read all of this author's other novels, including the excellent, laugh out loud Spellman family series. They are all great, find them if you haven't read them, and read them. I won't say The Passenger is the best of them, (though it might be), but it is definitely a different type of novel than her previous books.

Is it a "crime" novel? I don't know for sure. But I DO know it would be a crime not to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual story well told
Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2017
This is an unusual story very well told. The protagonist is on the run and changing identities as she goes. A fascinating look at "how to" lose one identity and engage another. Since every page is a suspenseful drama, I'm unable to give too much story line away without ruining it.

Suffice it to say, I stayed up half the night to finish the book, absolutely dying to know what caused the girl to make a run from her first life which kicked off this whole process. Although the subject might have been difficult, the read itself was easy and ultimately satisfying.

I'm going to search Amazon for more from Lisa Lutz. I like this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars My best read for 2016!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2016
The review on the cover says 'utterly compelling' but I don't think that even scratches the surface in giving this thriller justice. This novel is already my best read of 2016. Our lead (going by several different names throughout the course of the book) is a fiery, young woman who sheds identities as she flees- from what? We don't know until the almost end. What we do know however is that Blue (if that's her real name) may be helping or hindering her fight for freedom. We also know that despite the actual crimes our protagonist does commit, she does so with reason, and not because she's mad or bad- stopping the age old debate in its tracks. With sharp sentences and a narrative set in a realistic tone, we are offered an authentic view of life on the run, and justice prevails, so does love. This psychological thriller will have you on the edge of your seat, but from the half-way point, you will try to savour each and every word. A little twist in the end (another revelation) fits perfectly, concluding this fabulous read. I can't wait to read more from this author. Lisa Lutz sets something new and original in the psychological crime thriller genre. Lovers of thrillers must read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Break neck paced thriller
Reviewed in Australia on April 30, 2016
"The Passenger" by Lisa Lutz is a highly recommended fast-paced thriller about a woman on the run. I was in the mood to read a thrilling, fast-paced, and above all entertaining work of fiction, and The Passenger fit the bill. Lisa Lutz's writing is crisp and smart and for the most part she keeps things moving. I felt pulled into the novel within the first few sentences as the opening of Lutz's novel sets off at a break-neck pace and keeps it up until the end.
The story goes:- Tanya Dubois is her current identity, but one she's going to have to lose soon since her husband died after falling down the stairs. Tanya can't afford to have too many questions asked about her so she packs a bag, grabs what cash she can, hits the road until she reaches a dive motel where she can dye her hair and make a call on a pre-paid phone to someone from her past who apparently owes her a big favour. She asks him to send her more cash and a new identity so she can ditch her current name. Now she's on the run looking for a new start as Amelia.
Initially, Tanya is not an easy character to like. She is cold and comes across as rather opportunistic as she takes advantage of the people who cross her path. However, as more information about her past is revealed through a series of e-mails spanning several years, it is much easier to view her actions in a much more favourable light.
You never quite know if Tanya/Amelia/Debra, etc. is innocent or not. The ease in which she can slip into a new name and identity is disquieting, to say the least. What exactly went on in her past that she has this connection? Lutz does a brilliant job making you care about her protagonist and there are enough twists and turns to make this surprising but not far fetched. The writing is masterful, sharp and smart. The scenes are well-crafted and carefully plotted while keeping the quick pace, which encourages a sense of urgency while reading. Lisa Lutz brings the novel to a dramatic but surprisingly, uplifting conclusion. I loved it.
