Product Description

Gotham: The Complete First Season (DVD)

Before there was Batman, there was GOTHAM. Everyone knows the name of Commissioner Gordon. But what of his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the layers of corruption in Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? GOTHAM is the origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer Bruno Heller, this crime drama follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city and chronicles the genesis of one of the most popular super heroes of our time. Although the crime drama follows Gordon’s turbulent and singular career, it also focuses on his unlikely friendship with the young heir to the Wayne fortune – a friendship that will play a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he’s destined to be.

Good show but delivered in an alarming way
I really like Gotham and after getting The Flash Season 1 on Blu-Ray, I was excited. But when I got it, I honestly had some problems with it. To give some context when I'm expecting a product from this site, I always imagine in a big truck and being concerned if it's possibly roughed up. Well, the top corner of the case keeping the discs safe came in broken and two discs were not clipped in and after a little digging, I learned that some of the clippings on the binder keeping the disc connected to the set were snapped off. The discs were in good shape but with the intention of lining it up with The Flash Season 1 (that came intact BTW) I really didn't have a case for the discs and I ended up using something else instead. I'm never ordering a DVD or Blu-Ray off of Amazon again (at least not a multiple disc set) and I implore you not to order a disc set like this over two discs. Yeah, it might come intact like The Flash Season 1 Blu-Ray but the damage still makes me regret my choice. I've tried to get a new order but it was already costly and I can't bring myself to. At least the discs themselves was in perfect condition

The story of Bruce Wayne/Batman has been told countless multiple times in live-action. In most versions, we see the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne in front of a young Bruce Wayne and then flash forward to his decision to become Batman. Of course, that pretty much has to be done in the movies so you can have an actual Batman movie. None of the movies or TV shows have told the story of what happened to Bruce as he was growing up, until now. Gotham is an origin story for Gotham City itself as well as the villains whom Batman would ultimately come to face when he grew up. The easy comparison to make is to Smallville, which showed a teenage Clark Kent before he became Superman. Here, a young Bruce Wayne, played by David Mazouz, has to deal with the trauma of the death of his parents, try to be a kid, and start his journey toward becoming a vigilante with the help of his butler, Alfred (played by Sean Pertwee).

The focus of the first season is really on the criminal underworld of Gotham, not controlled by Supervillians, but by mobsters staking out their turf, and the corrupt police department that largely looks the other way. At this point in the story Jim Gordon (played by The O.C.'s Ben Makenzie) is a rookie detective, paired with a grizzled veteran Harvey Bullock (played by Donal Logue). Bullock is one of the loo the other way cops, who sometimes dabbles in being corrupt, and of course, Gordon refuses to do either. The show is in part a case-of-the-week procedural and also has some serial arcs that play out throughout the season. The large ones this season involve mobsters Fish Mooney (played by Jada Pinkett Smith) who has ambitions beyond being an associate of mob boss Carmine Falcone (played by the recognizable character actor John Doman). We also get the introduction of the iconic bad guys including Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova ). The show also has a very strong supporting and recurring cast including Morena Baccarin (from Firefly), Erin Richards, Drew Powell, Carol Kane, Peter Scolari, and more. There are also some swerves and misdirection when it comes to some characters. The season ends with a couple of cliffhangers and a couple of reveals that will set up season two and beyond.

For those who get the Blu-Ray, the show looks and sounds great in HD. The show uses a mix of practical and special effects and everything looks seamless. The Blu-Ray set is a four-disc set. Each disc has deleted scenes for the episodes on that particular disc. All the other extras are on the fourth disc, including a three-part making-of featurette that lasts about a half hour. Then there is a 20-minute feature on designing the look of the series, a 26-minute feature on Penguin, and a 21-minute series of short web featurettes which has more cast interviews. Then there is a DC night at comic-con, a feature that lasts about half an hour and includes material from the other series, Flash, Arrow, and Constantine. Finally, there is a short gag reel.

Overall, the season is very good. Obviously, this is not a Batman show, as David Mazouz was just 12 or 13 when the season was filmed. In fact, while Bruce appeared in every episode, he was not always a focus of the episodes and was often just an ancillary character. While the show was on the air at the same time as Arrow, it was, aside from a blink and you'll miss it Queen Consolidated logo in the pilot, was never established as being in the Arrowverse. In fact, it is not clear exactly what time the show was set in as all of the cars in the show are older but they have cell phones. The show is well written and very well acted, with Mackenzie and Louge doing much of the heavy lifting on the "good guy" side of things. There are definitely some elements from the comics that are incorporated, but the show also aims to tell its own story and not be a carbon copy of any other variations of Batman. It is definitely worth watching.

Even the secondary characters are engaging in this series of stories penned by the writer of The Mentalist.
This is Gotham (circa 2000-2005?) before the Batman begins to bring order to that city (presumably in 2014-15).
A number of the characters from the comic are introduced in their early years with personalities, strengths and flaws that foreshadow what they will become in DC comics canon. The delivery is subtle, believable and the plots and characters are very nicely done.

Little Poison Ivy has an abusive father and raises her few pathetic plants in a small apartment in a concrete jungle.

The casting is flawless, as are the direction and acting. The characters (even the stranger villains) are entirely believable (Oswald Cobblepot particularly so). The writing makes even the "toss-away" characters three dimensional.

A street urchin asks a favor of a burnt out cop in an office full of crooked cops - he denies the request (out of habbit) and she quite casually threatens to "Scream and tell everyone that you 'touched me'". He lurches back from her and gives her a pained expression (despairing that even the children of Gotham have lost all respect for the cops, or that one so young would prove so adept at blackmail) before getting the detective that she demanded to see. That 30 second exchange by Selena and "cop number 6" has an impact (technically, it should have been just filler between scenes).

And again, Selena Kyle as a thief and street urchin looking for her mother is especially well done (and it really is hard to pick a "favorite" in this group - there are excellent scenes for all the primary and secondary characters).

Harvey Bullock, always a nuisance character that I found annoying as a two-dimensional "corrupt cop" - is actually quite a believable, sympathetic character here... even while he's being a completely arrogant, lazy jerk! I really can't bring myself to hate This version of Harvey... and he Clearly sold out years ago.
The writer/director and actor actually conjured up a Harvey that ..... dare I say it..... I actually Like!

The future Commissioner Gordon is the main character of this ensemble - Very intelligently done. Determined enough to take on a corrupt city government, intelligent enough to stay Just under the radar by "playing ball" without actually playing ball. He brings an insightful air of menace to the criminals that he encounters without actually stepping over the lines... a precarious balancing act.
Even his girlfriend, Barbara, is notable in the few minutes that she is on screen. Ideally a sounding board for him to recount the events of his day and plan strategy - she engages and does a lot more than just listen and kick in an idea or two. She helps bring the issue to a head by pushing him into the deep water (with a mischievous grin) all the while providing him with plausible deniability.

Bruce Wayne's presentation as a 12-13 year old was, however, most potentially concerning for me as his was the easiest precursor character to get terribly wrong (see Phantom Menace).

They nailed it!

Bruce the adolescent shows a forceful personality with out showing any sign of youthful petulance (Star Wars Ep 2&3). He comes across as Very intelligent and Very perceptive, but most of all ..... Driven in a way the borders on the disturbing.
Alfred (another strong role) explains to Lt Gordon why he Hasn't called in a psychologist to look into why Bruce seems..... more than a bit ..... different.
A bit too detached, A bit too perceptive - it seems as if he already has an agenda and he doesn't care to explain what it is.

When you ask yourself - could This kid grow up into a man that will make hardened sociopaths wet themselves, the answer for me was - oh yeah. The transformation has already begun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enfin une série dont les méchants sont les héros !
Reviewed in France on March 17, 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars SERIE TV ECCEZIONALE...OTIMAMENTE SCRITTA ED INTERPRETATA!
Reviewed in Italy on March 25, 2017
Questa Serie Tv per quel che mi riguarda è qualcosa che non vedevo da tempo. Vale tutti i soldi spesi!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesante historia paralela a la vida de Bruce Wayne
Reviewed in Mexico on April 3, 2016
