I have had over the years many earbuds and still use several of them. (for different reasons). For travel, I often use a pair of Shure in ear (ear occluding) ear buds which probably have the best overall sound. They are somewhat difficult to position properly and only use them when it is ok to occlude outside sounds and when it is worth taking the time to position them properly.
I have a pair of Bang and Olufsen (non-occluding) ear buds that I use fairly often. Very good sound (although not as good as the Shure), but again, it takes a little time to position them. They are also not always the most comfortable to wear. I do not wear them for cycling, given their cost and concern over sweat damaging them. (Also, not sure how they would fit with my helmet, etc).
For cycling/biking, I have used mostly a fairly inexpensive Sony sport ear buds, that hook around my ear lobes. They have held up fairly well over years of use. The sound is mediocre, and they don't occlude my ear canals, so outside sound is pretty good for biking. They do have an issue with the left one falling out at times when they get sweaty. Also, the cord occasionally will catch on to some things when walking (door handle, bike handlebar, etc).
That being said, I came across the AfterShokz in a review on a bike website and figured I would give them a try. Not much of a discount on Amazon, but figured I would try them. They are packaged nicely and the instructions are fairly simple and seemed good. They feel like a quality product. They connected easily to my iPhone bluetooth. I was considering trying to connect them directly to my Apple watch, but figured the connection may be better directly to the phone. (The only disadvantages that I see, are that if I answer a phone call using the watch face prompt, the sound stupidly does not switch to the headphones (that is an Apple oversight, in my opinion). Also, if I had any music on the watch, I would not be able to listen directly without the phone. (I have not, as of yet, ever put music directly on the watch).
I was concerned that I may have some problems with shared real estate with all my bike gear. I put on a skull cap (Halo brand), then a bike helmet. (Specialized). I then put on the Aftershokz. Last, I put on a pair of Oakley prescription sunglasses. (arms are fairly large for glases). Overall, all fit fairly well.
I then went for a 40 minute bike ride, mid day, in the Florida heat and humidity. Although I was aware of them on, I cannot say at any time they were uncomfortable which is good. At no time, did I have to worry about them falling off. It was nice, not having to worry about the cord catching on anything or the earpiece falling out of my ear.
The sound was pretty impressive, considering they were not even in my ears. Not as much bass as the Shure ear occluding buds, but pretty good sound overall. I would not want all that bass while biking anyway. I found I could listen to my music louder and it sounded much clearer, without feeling concerned about missing something with the road noise or traffic. It seemed like a near perfect compromise between hearing road sounds and hearing the music well. (Much better than riding with one ear piece in, which I have done at times in the past as well).
I got a phone call during my ride. (Something that was difficult to answer with my cheap Sony, headphone only, buds. This was simple. I reached up with my left hand, quickly felt the button my left earpiece and hit it once. The person seemed to hear my responses without diffculty, and I heard them loud and clear.
So overall, at least on the first day.....I am fairly pleased. Build quality very good, Design very good, Sound very good, Price, fair, but I guess you get what you pay for. Comfort with all my bike gear in place.....so far....better than expected.
As an addendum: I have used the headphones now for another week or two and still fairly impressed. Have found that putting them on first, before my skullcap and bike helmet, and before my glasses (all in that order), seems to work best. Only one day did I seem to have trouble keeping the left part keep slipping off, and when I got home from my bike ride, found that the sweat was keeping it moving around, only because I had not put them on properly. If I take the time to make sure both sides are firmly hooked around my ears before they settle in front of my ears, they do not slip or move much at all, through my entire ride, even if I sweat in the Florida heat and humidity.
Sound quality was still felt to be quite good, as is the ability to hear road noises, unless the volume setting is fairly loud.
Another addendum, now much more than a year old. Quickly became my favorite earphones. Great for biking.....walking. Use them for everyday use to listen to podcasts, music. The only exception, is for plane travel, the Shure earbuds are better....since the open air design of the Trekz allow the engine noise of the plane to drown out the sound of the music or podcast.....but used the for travel and several trainrides.....and the Trekz were wonderful. Buy a lot from Amazon....and quickly became one of my favorite purchases.
As an addendum, about a year and half after purchase, I had some issues with the on/off button, and the company support via email was great. They not only make a good product, but they stand behind it. Within 2 weeks, I had a new unit replacement. Great product! Great customer support!

In Depth:
My job currently is to deliver pizzas and I wanted a way to be able to listen to music/audiobooks in and out of the store without getting my boss mad. She has a no headphones policy, but after seeing that these are open ear she has not told me to take them off; although I am treading lightly... So how are they?
Simple answer: Awesome. The music quality is very nice and clear as well as having volume that can be very loud. The whole experience is very natural. Being able to hear classical music or the Interstellar soundtrack while gazing at the stars is something else. I am no sound expert but these are very decent. Connecting these to devices is super easy, although connecting to a computer can sometimes be a bit more complicated. Mic works great. Over the past month or so that I've used these I've had to call a few people and they were rarely able to tell I was in a car; keep in mind that I drive a diesel car. The dual mics definitely do their job. Although I've had some trouble interacting with windows and getting the mic to work properly which is why I put it on as a con.
Controls are simple in design but have a very intuitive multi function that makes these things easy to use. Looking at the device you will notice that it has 3 buttons: 1 on the left and 2 on the right. The single tap on the left button allows you to pause/play and answer/end a call. The double tap allows you to either skip to the next track or redial the last person you called, depending on what you are doing. The volume controls on the right are also malfunction. If you hold down the volume up button it will allow you to power on the device as well as enter pairing mode if you hold it down a bit after that. However, if you hold both buttons down it will change the EQ mode on the device. *It also has more functions like battery level, but these are the main ones.
With most headphones they usually have a built in sub to give you that nice bass that you love and expect. With these, since it's a little bit different technology, it uses vibration to simulate that effect. Although it does a great job it can be a bit off putting for some and it's nice that you can turn it off. It took me about a week to get used to it, but I leave it on because I prefer the sound quality.
The battery on this thing is rated for 6 hours, but it usually took between 6 to 8 hours to drain it; Which lasted me a long shift then getting back and still being able to listen to an audiobook. Do keep in mind I pause and play the device often because I still consider it rude to talk to a customer while listening to music. It also didn't take long to charge it. I didn't measure anything but I would say an hour to fully charge is a fair estimate.
Gaming on these things was actually very interesting. Like I said before the entire sound experience was very natural and being that these have a pretty low lag, for Bluetooth, I did pretty good on Overwatch playing with these. By no stretch would I recommend these for professionals, but in a pinch these a very comfortable.
The build quality on this is really good. It has a soft plastic around it that makes it as comfortable as it is going to get for $100. It also has this flexible band that connects one side to the other that not only protects it from you accidentally sitting on or dropping it, but also keeps up the pressure that you need to in order for sound to be transferred to your head. I have no trouble letting my younger siblings use these, which is something I can't say about most of my expensive items.
The range is really the only negative thing I have to say about it, but it isn't really a deal breaker. Although I have to bring my phone with me when I get out of the car to bring a customers pizza to their front step, it excels in the quality and functionality it brings to the table so it doesn't really bother me all that much.
These things are comfortable, again, they are as good as they going to get for $100. However, every so often they will rub my ears the wrong way or give me a head that will be irritating. But I think it is just a matter of learning how to use this device and after about a week it won't happen as much.
Although I haven't had a lot of time to test this out, using these in a gym may not be the best for some. People like to tune out everything and just focus on their work out routine. Although they do come with earplugs you can easily spend $10-20 on a pair earbuds that will have a similar sound quality. However, for me I've used them long enough that I would be perfectly comfortable using them at a gym; So it really just boils down to personal preference.
Although these are rated IP55 not having these water proof is slightly annoying. But it protects against sweat, dust, and even some rain; So I'll remain neutral.
Conclusion:
These are my favorite headphones right now. I use them so much I have fallen in love with them. Everyone that i've shown them too has said they really like them. Yes, you can find cheaper versions of this and some like the Zungle that are in sunglasses. But most of those have terrible sound quality or aren't loud enough. Plus Aftershockz will set up cancer awareness promotions that donates a portion of the profit, on the pink ones, to help people with cancer. At the end of the day it's your money but with these you are guaranteed quality.
Top reviews from other countries
I've received the Aftershockz and fell in love instantly.
Now keep in min you won't have deep bass nor incredible HiFi sound quality. But you'll have decent sound quality and safe riding where you can hear your surroundings (unless it's on max level which can be freaking loud).
I use it mostly to listen to music, haven't tried podcast or radio while riding. You will have the occasional loss of what you're listening to if your environment is noisy or you're speeding down a hill. But it's quite acceptable and frankly this is what I expected.
I use them indoors to call my girlfriend or participate in videoconferences, as well as listening to podcasts. No complaints there.
Questions I had before and can now answer:
- you can wear the headphones with sunglasses and helmet without any problem. You won't notice it and it's not as bulky as you might think
- max level is too loud and quite honestly not terribly comfortable as the headphones vibrate quite a bit. normal volume is perfect and is not uncomfortable
- is it awesome? yes it is!
- mic quality is good for call and videoconferences
TL;DR
the headphones are very good, and suitable for most uses. If you were thking about buying them, go!
