When Hattie finally agrees to take a temporary job in an accounting firm to pay for her basic needs, like shopping and chocolate, she is once again in the middle of a dangerous situation with coworkers and a possible rekindling of romance with Alan Wellborn.
There is just the right amount of fun loving humor to offset the suspense and danger surrounding Hattie throughout her adventure.
As the reader I found myself routing for Hattie to overcome her bias about accountants, solve the mystery of suspicious deaths around her, and find out maybe Alan isn't the jerk he appears to be. Temporarily Insane is a thoroughly enjoyable story with believable characters. I recommend you get to know Hattie Cookes in her most recent adventure! Hopefully there will be a third Hattie Cookes fiasco coming out soon!
Temporarily Insane is a romantic comedy mystery, Book Two in the Hattie Cooks Mystery Series. Book One in the series is Temporarily Employed.
Temporarily Insane is a fun, quick read that I had a hard time putting down. In Sommerville, Author Vicki Batman has created a setting that feels genuine, peopled with real and likable characters. I especially enjoyed the lead character Harriette (Hattie) Cooks, with her snarky wit and sass. The action is told by Hattie, in first person.
Here is a snippet about Hattie and her friend Trixie. Trixie is trying to convince Hattie to accept the perfect temporary position Trixie has found for her — in an accounting firm (not her favorite place to work):
".... Quit being obstinate. This job's perfect."
Obviously, Trixie seemed overjoyed with her efforts to match me. She continued her sales pitch with assurance.
"You're highly organized. Great with people. Professional. A true asset. Just think of all the typing, filing, and phone answering — skills you excel at."
Typing, filing, and phone — oh my!
"And you dress sooo well."
---------------------------------------------
Hattie eventually realizes that, if she is going to continue to dress sooo well, she's going to have to suck it up and accept this dreaded accounting firm job, so she can pay for her couture habit. Since this is a murder mystery, you can correctly surmise that things don't go well for Hattie. To find out everything that happens regarding this temp job, and regarding Allan (her heartthrob from Book One), you'll just have to READ THE BOOK!
I recommend Temporarily Insane to all fans of romantic comedy mysteries. I think it will particularly appeal to fans of Vicki Batman's other works.
I really enjoyed Temporarily Insane by Vicki Batman, and award it Five Stars!

Originally published on my blog Jane Reads.
Hattie makes her living as a temporary employee or “temp” accepting short-term job assignments. Her latest is as an Administrative Assistant for a CPA firm. The title of this book must stem from Hattie’s job interview because that entire scene was the zaniest of job interviews from start to finish. Nevertheless, despite her misgivings, Hattie needs the job and accepts the position, taking readers on a wacky ride.
Detective Allan Wellborn is “hot.” He and Hattie had known each other from childhood. Hattie muses over circumstances from the previous novel that brought them together again, but not as close as Hattie would have liked. “Temporary Insane” finds Hattie and Allan still as “friends,” with Allan involved with another woman.
When two auditors at the CPA firm turn up dead, Allan and Hattie find themselves in the mix – both professionally and personally.
The humor is dry-witted, the mystery theme almost like something out of a Hallmark Channel movie, the identity of the killer freaked-out this reader, and the romance? Let’s just say Hattie is a true heroine.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.**
Hattie Cooks is assigned to another temporary job at the one place she never wanted to step foot in…an Accounting firm. She can type, file, and answer phones with the best of them, but give her a column of figures to add up, and she’ll run screaming from the building.
But in order to fund her shopping AND chocolate habit, she sucks it up and takes the job as assistant to the president of the firm. Settling nicely into the job, she begins making friends until the day she literally runs into the skinny, skanky, overblown Barbie doll the love of her life is dating. Determined to stay on good terms, Hattie does her best to maintain even footing when around her.
Suddenly, men she has become friends with, and even one she dated, start dying. Hattie starts nosing around, desperate to make sure the police don’t suspect her for the deaths.
The author has such a humorous voice for writing this type of story, and they are always fun to read. I was hooked from the beginning and all the way to the very surprising twist at the end! Oh, and you’ll definitely want to read this book with a bag of peanut M&M’s, because I came away with such a craving for Hattie’s favorite chocolate treat!
