2015 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist (LGBT Category)
2014 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist
"One of the 10 Best Indie YA Novels of 2014" -
Foreword Reviews

"
A Boy Like Me is a big-hearted novel narrated by an unforgettable character: Peyton, a boy trapped in the body of a girl. As he navigates his complicated coming-of-age, Peyton's powerhouse voice - funny, sad and charming, riding edges of both humor and pathos - renders his experience universal. I cheered Peyton on even as I cringed at some of his understandable missteps; continued rooting for him through the book's sweet surprise of an ending; and carry him with me now as I do anyone, real or imagined, who touches my soul." - Lisa Borders, author of The Fifty-First State and Cloud Cuckoo Land

"Tara and Peyton's story progresses like a classic forbidden-love romance. A reader would be hard-pressed to not care about these characters by the end of the book. The book is ultimately realistic without being utterly bleak, smart without going over the heads of a YA audience, and impactful without being moralistic, or extending the meaning of Peyton's individual life too far beyond him to somehow stand in for "all" trans youth." - Mitch Kellaway, Lambda Literary

"This story of a trans boy falling in love with a girl in high school is delightful and heartwarming in all the right places. Wood perfectly captures the intensity and immediacy of adolescent ups and downs." - Emerson M. Fuller,
Foreword Reviews

"A classic love story! Wood gets all the details of a trans individual coming-of-age into this novel. From the feelings about clothes, to the relationships with parents to the negotiations of life at school, this story rings true. Wood takes care with her setting and makes life, as painful and joyful as it can be, realistic. This novel is a great examination of what it means to come to terms with who you are and what it means to be true to yourself." - Alex Myers, author of

I started reading a Boy Like Me on Saturday. Once I started, I could not put it down and wound up staying in until I finished even though I really did not want the book to end. The characters in the book were so well developed, I felt I knew them personally and became vested in their story. I laughed and cried many times while reading. I always know I love a book when I continue to think about the story a week or so after I finish reading. The story was touching and memorable. I think everyone has experienced times while growing up where they felt different or awkward and can empathize with Peyton's struggles. The story was a good reminder to embrace and cherish what makes each of us unique. I highly recommend this book.

Warning! *possible spoilers*

This book is one of my all-time favorite stories about a trans character because unlike most of the other books I've read on the subject this one follows the main character's journey from a young age up until his realization and eventual acceptance of himself as a transsexual person. At first, like me and many other transpeople, Peyton has absolutely no idea who he is or what is going on within himself and we get to read along as he figures it out and comes to understand himself. This is a fictional story but it could have easily been any real transman's story and that what made it so great to me.

This book was a pretty quick and good read. The voice is strong and the characters are well developed. The story is sweet, and I didn't want it to end.

I gave it a 5 because the story and writing are good. The story was slightly predictable, but in a good way. I cried a little when it ended because I really connected with the main character and well, I just didn't want the story to end.

I recommend this book to anyone, young adults and adults alike. If you or someone you know is struggling with their identity or self acceptance, or you want a good love story to read give this book a shot.

A Boy Like Me is an important addition to the LBGT YA category of books. There are few books out now dealing with transgender issues in teens, and even fewer novels from a first person perspective. I'd have loved to give A Boy Like Me five stars, But I found it lacking in a few key areas. The main character, Peyton, was well-written and truly believable, especially in her interactions with and emotional turmoil with her first and only real love Tara. But I was pulled out of the story somewhat by wondering about her emotional response to several of the events in her life. i found myself wondering things like how did Peyton feel about paying all the bills for the household? How did a teen barely in high school make enough money to do that? How did she really feel about her father walking out so abruptly?
The book started a little slowly for me and I almost put it down. I'm glad I didn't, because once Jennie Wood really got going with Peyton's story i was totally captivated. There's one book out there now that I feel really captures the feelings of a girl dealing with her own transgender issues and that's Beautiful Music for Ugly Children. Jennie Wood comes close in her first novel. I look forward to her second one.
