p.s. I could not find the country of origin anywhere on the box or the flashlight -- I'm guessing China based on price and since that's where all these things come from now, but the box has an American flag and "God Bless America" printed on it. Unlike a lot of the Chinese-made junk, this one at least seems to be designed in America (and they did a good job on that).
p.p.s. My flashlight arrived in just 24 hours, before I actually got the shipping notice -- thanks Amazon!!
I love the fact that it runs on a single AA battery as I keep a couple extra in my EDC and that it is small, light weight and has a clip that keeps it secure in my bag. It did not come with instructions but there is a link printed on the outside of the box to a video online that show you how to change modes and focus width. I like this method of instruction. Less paper waste, less cost to the maker which translates to less cost to the consumer. If however you live in the 18th century and don't have internet access you may be SOL.
As far as downsides I only see a couple:
The beam is pretty narrow even at it's widest so if you are looking for something to light up your entire backyard this isn't it. I believe this is a function of the size of the flashlight though (it very easily fits in a pocket) and does not impact my needs so I don't knock any stars of for it.
The beam adjustment (from narrow to wide) relies on pushing the front lens casing forward and backward on the shaft instead of the more conventional method of twisting. This relies on friction to work and I am dubious of any product that uses a friction point to operate as these points typically wear down over time and render the product useless. Again, this is a potential problem or may not be a problem at but something I will be keeping an eye.
Anyway, I love this little guy and am happy to have him in my EDC. I suspect I will get many years of use out of him.
Pros:
Build quality. It is considered a "tactical" light and it feels very solid and sturdy. Even the battery compartment and the thumb switch feel well made. I was impressed for a $12 light.
The light itself, is a nice white light. No real yellowing to speak of, which is really nice.
Cons:
Brightness. Here is where my disappointment came in. This light claims that it is 300 lumens. There is no way that this is a 300 lumen light. While it is very bright, especially when zoomed down to a small diameter spot. I can see how people are impressed with the brightness. However, I feel that the people who are impressed with the brightness, have never had a nicer quality light. I took this light and compared it against my smaller Fenix E11. The Fenix is rated around 105 lumens and adjusting the zoom on the J5 to match the diameter of the Fenix, it was barely brighter. For a 300 lumen light, it should have put the Fenix to shame, but the Fenix, which is barely bigger than the AA battery that powers it, held it's own. I should also note that the battery in the Fenix has been in there for months as it's the light I carry in my backpack.
My next test was against my Black Diamond Storm headlamp that is rated for 160 lumens. The storm has a very broad beam and setting the J5 at that width was not brighter than the Storm. The J5 was noticeable when I zoomed the J5 completely down and viewed them across the yard. Admittedly though, the Storm isn't meant for distance and did light up more of the yard. I also compared it against some sub 100 lumen lights, such as a Maglight, Garrity, and an off-brand light from Walmart. The J5 was noticeably brighter than those, as expected. As a last test, I put it up against my Bushnell Pro 500 lumen light...just for kicks. The Bushnnell outshined it, both literally and figuratively.
I have two more cons for me, which are more pet peeves than anyone. The first is the squarish beam. I just don't care for it. Does it affect the functionality or brightness? Nope. Just prefer a nice bright circle. The next is the size. It was a little smaller than I expected. In my hand, the head of the flashlight is all that extends past my palm. Which isn't bad. It's a nice size to toss in a backpack. However, if I was wanting something for "tactical" use, I would want something with a little more meat to it. The small size, when paired with the tactical look and feel (lots of ridges and edges) make it a little awkward in the hand. It does, however, have a solid pocket clip, so I gues it's supposed to be smaller.
Now, would I buy this light again? Probably. The build quality of the light is worth the $12. It also is a bright light for $12. Would I recommend this light? Probably. However, I would want it known up front that I feel that these lights are in no way 300 lumens. So if you are wanting a decently bright, well-made cheap flashlight then I would say go for it. However, if you need something that's 300L or better, then I'd save my money and put it towards a more expensive flashlight.
Lastly, I have a complaint, but as it is not singluar to this flashlight, I won't place it in the cons sections. This light has what I consider a failing that even some of the more expensive brands to there have. That is the way they do the multi-function. The J5 has a high setting, low setting, and strobe. Pressing the thumb button once, turns it on high. Pressing again turns it off. Pressing a third time turns it on low. 4th time off. 5th time strobe. 6th time off. Then the cycle starts again. So what does this mean? Well if I turn on the light and use it on high then it is fine. However, if I go back and need it again and turn it on then it will be on low. Use it another day, well now when I kick it on it is on strobe. So each time I want to use it high, I have to cycle through the myriad clicks to get it back to where I actually want it. Again, most of the expensive lights also have this issue. My other lights also have this issue. I wish they'd come up with another solution. Maybe turning a switch on the barrel to lock it into whatever mode you choose.
Top reviews from other countries
Here are a few other things I really like about the J5 Tactical V1-Pro:
- Uses only one AA battery. That makes this flashlight more portable, since AAs are available pretty much everywhere.
- IPX 4 rating = splashproof from any angle.
- 1/2 button press to switch between the 3 light modes (High, low and strobe)
- Sturdy construction. This thing feels solid in hand.
- Adjustable head to change beam focus.
- Sturdy clip to hook this on to pants or in a back pack.
I'll be carrying this with me everywhere I go now.
I'm very pleased with this flashlight.
Excited about my massive special forces style torch I pictured myself walking with my family through the forest in the dark of the night. Suddenly we were confronted by a group of would-be thieves armed with knives and threatening to harm us. As they got closer I pulled out my secret weapon, shining it into the face of our attackers, stunning them with the super bright flash before driving it into the face of the biggest one and taking him down, followed by his friends one by one. Scared and badly hurt, they begged me for mercy before running off into the cover of darkness. My sons cheered for joy as their hero Daddy saved the day, my other half watched in awe, visibly excited that her man the alpha male had shown such bravery and bravado to protect them.
I strolled back to our lodge with my chest puffed out and my massive balls dragging along the ground. I woke suddenly to a knock at the door and realised I was back in reality and that the postman had arrived with my amazon parcel.
"Maybe they're sending it later" I thought to myself as the postman handed me the small parcel, way too small to contain my massive tactical torch. Intrigued, I ripped open the packet. As the contents became visible my face dropped and my heart sank.
"What the f is that?!" I asked myself. It was my tactical torch. It was tiny. Not even big enough to knock out a squirrel if one decided to attack me.
I quickly checked Amazon in the hope that they'd sent me a miniature version by mistake. But there had been no mistake on their part. The only mistake made had been by me. I didn't think to check the size.
So there I was, my fantasy in tatters as I prepared for our trip. There was no time to buy another before we left.
I realised then that I'd have to put up with the disappointment of my below average length tool and suddenly I knew then how my girlfriend must have felt.
I'll still give this 5 stars though, purely because the light is powerful, it's well made and very lightweight.
