Discover how to master and enjoy the lace-like, intricate, often mysterious-seeming leno weave with this comprehensive guide. For new weavers and advanced-level weavers alike, the book combines historical information about leno with the best practical instructions and "secret" tips resulting from the author's years of research and sampling. Leno weaves, also called gauze weaves, are very sheer, yet at the same time very durable because they are made with four warp threads that are twisted around each other. Here, colorful photos of leno fabrics and step-by-step instructions, along with seven beautiful projects, help weavers learn leno pick up and many other techniques and structures like bead leno and Tarascan lace. This is a one-of-a-kind resource for anyone who wants to learn to create this versatile weaving structure or further refine their leno skills.

The book is well laid out and the projects seem easy to read (I'm a new weaver, so this technique is a little advanced for me).

Beautifully illustrated, high quality book!

I am very glad I purchased this book, but ... The photo reproduction of samples that are in dark colors is awful. This is a very sad thing. The publishing resolution of the photos is a big disappointment. A magnifying glass does not help either. But the text that goes with the photos is great and the drafts for projects look very nice. It would have been nice if I could pick out a photo of a technique I want to try instead of guess work. Covers techniques: pick up, bead leno, patterns with bead leno, special yarns, and Tarascan lace. Summary: book is a great technique book. Photographs leave a lot to be desired. Glad to have it for the good information.

This is an excellent book. Some people complained about the pictures, but I sit by a light and had no problem seeing details. She has done a thorough job and it is the only leno resource out there.

A previous reviewer said the color registration of photos of samples woven in dark thread is "awful." That was kind. Many photos are useless as tools for understanding the weaves because there is almost nothing to see but blobs of color. (Note to publisher: dark purple yarn on a black background is a no-no.) Some light colored samples are washed out to almost white. If one is looking for projects to reproduce, be aware that two of the seven projects 1) require significant sewing; and 2) have vague directions (ex: warp width: three inches wider than project; warp length: enough for project). If one is looking for instruction on the mechanics of leno, the technique discussions are reasonably clear. The book is only 64 pages long, which includes the glossary, bibliography and author bio. For the price, it is expensive for what one gets. I won't say I'm disappointed entirely, but this isn't one I'm going to recommend to weaving friends.

I used this book to investigate the process of leno. However I have a rigid heddle loom and this is geared more to someone with a four shaft loom. It is still interesting to read and if I upgrade it will be a reference guide.
It does have a chapter on pick up leno, but I wanted to learn about doup leno which is not covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for rigid heddle and multi-shaft looms!
Reviewed in Australia on September 22, 2018
I hummed and haa'd a bit before buying this, and I am soooo glad I did buy it. I've done a bit of leno and other lace weaves in the past, I enjoy hands on weaving, so the hand manipulation and use of a pick-up stick did not worry me. Along my travels I have even picked up some doup heddles, which so far have remained unused because hand manipulation is easy once you understand how its done. This book is so inspirational that a weaver friend, who has never tried anything like this before, suggested we do a WAL together! This book offers Tarascon Lace as a bonus, so there is plenty to learn and keep us busy.
One of the criticisms aimed at this book has been the difficulty with seeing the photos and distinguishing what is what, so I was surprised to find that its not as bad as I feared. I am legally blind and could make out what I needed, but that could be because I already knew what I was looking at, and understand that some of the lace weaves are not very easy to work out for people who are visual learners. Looking at the finished item is not as easy as examining a photo of overshot, for example and since Leno usually uses the same colour warp and weft its hard to disinguish.
I found this book easy to understand. Its quite likely that those who have a limited experience with weaving could have difficulties at first, but reading carefully, and the help of a search engine where the photos need clarification should help most people work their way through without too many problems. You do not have to do this on a 4 shaft or greater loom; leno is just as easily, perhaps even more easily, learned using a rigid heddle loom or limiting yourself to two shafts. It cuts out some of the complications and distractions so you can concentrate on the threads you manipulate without worrying about picking them up from the right shaft.
So warp up a loom and get hands on! Manipulating the warps and weft with your fingers may seem strange at first, but its well worth the effort for the beautiful results. And the author does not let us down with her discussion of the topic or her teaching.
