Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this outrageous parody of a survival guide, Saturday Night Live staff writer Brooks prepares humanity for its eventual battle with zombies. One would expect the son of Mel Brooks to have a genetic predisposition to humor, and indeed, he does, and he exhibits it relentlessly here: he outlines virtually every possible zombie-human encounter, drafts detailed plans for defense and attack and outlines past recorded attacks dating from 60,000 B.C. to 2002. In planning for that catastrophic day when "the dead rise," Brooks urges readers to get to know themselves, their bodies, their weaponry, their surroundings and, just in case, their escape routes. Some of the book's more amusing aspects are the laughable analyses Brooks proposes on all aspects of zombiehood, and the specificity with which he enumerates the necessary actions for survival-i.e., a member of an anti-zombie team must be sure to have with him at all times two emergency flares, a signaling mirror, daily rations, a personal mess kit and two pairs of socks. Comic, though unnecessarily exhaustive, this is a good bet for Halloween gag gifts and fans of Bored of the Rings-esque humor. 100 line drawings.

Zombies!!!! Who doesn’t love zombies!!
This book is amazing for anyone who is into zombies and the lore. It goes into depth on how to survive an apocalypse. Of course, apocalypses aren’t real but the way Max Brooks writes in here makes it seem like it could be real and the advice and survival tips he gives us makes so much sense. Makes me feel like I’m ready to take on a zombie apocalypse! I’ve also had this book for about a year or two & it’s still in mint condition!

My best friend lent me this 17 years ago when we worked together. I began to read it and, for whatever reason, just put it away.

I just finished Mel Brooks's "All About Me." Mel mentions, and I had NO idea, that the author, Max Brooks, was his son!

I went downstairs to find another book and what basically jumps out at me? "The Zombie Survival Guide." It is not in the most pristine condition; certainly not as my friend lent it to me.

I decided to surprise him with not only the book, but the buried memory that I could now return the book he let me borrow so many years ago. He had forgotten all about it and, when I laid my memories on him, we both got a great laugh out of it.

Warning! Do not read this book, thinking it an actual compendium of survival tips,in case of any contact or attack by the "undead."

He may not have purposely intended this to be as funny as it it, but, it's Mel Brooks's son...How can one not read thus as what it's meant to be, a tongue-in-cheek compilation of survival tips, just in case of a zombie outbreak.

Test yourself with this helpful little quiz to determine if you need to study the Zombie Survival Guide before our next outbreak:

1. Which of these weapons is the best all-purpose primary weapon to keep handy for a close quarters zombie elimination:

a. Grenade, b. .22 caliber rimfire weapon, c. crossbow, d. crowbar

2. which of the following locations is the most defensible choice of "fortresses" against a long term zombie siege:

a. hospital building b.military complex c. Your home's basement d. police station e. shopping mall

3. True or False: a zombie can climb up a ladder

4. True or False: a zombie can reanimate after being frozen solid

5. True or False: zombies are afraid of fire

Answers: 1. d crowbar 2. b. military complex 3. False 4. True 5. False

This quiz doesn't even begin to cover the topics explored in the ZSG, but my friend if you answered even one of those five questions incorrectly, it signals that you do indeed have some serious gaps in your knowledge. The ZSG is a good primer for preparing yourself for that inevitable day when the undead rise with an insatiable appetite for fresh human flesh; not a complete education by any means, but it will point you in the right direction for further educating and training yourself in the event of Class1, 2, and/or 3 outbreaks. At the very least, the ZSG outlines some indispensable plans as well as supply and equipment lists for various survival and tactical scenarios.

The final section of the book contains synopses of recorded zombie attacks thoughout history. From @ 60,000 BC in Central Africa to 2002 AD U.S. Virgin Islands, the stories of more than fifty documented attacks and outbreaks are summarized here chronologically for our convenience. What we can learn from reading this section is how various people either survived or failed to eliminate their zombies. Knowing what worked (and what didn't) can give us greater understanding of our undead foe. It also underscores the importance of following the recommendations outlined in previous chapters of the ZSG to prevent the further spread of the virus (oh, you didn't even know it was a virus? Then you're really in deep without this book!).

A footnote to scriptwriters here: many needless deaths - and undeaths - may have been prevented if so many Hollywood zombie movies had not spread misinformation among the world's population. IF you wish to better serve mankind, as well as write a logistically accurate zombie screenplay, you should consider using the ZSG as your production "bible". Just a thought...

If you are the type of person who believes in readying for emergencies such as fires and earthquakes, then why wouldn't you safeguard yourself and your loved ones against the statistically realistic possibility of zombie attacks. Absolutely every home should have a copy the Zombie Survival Guide!

I would have given The Zombie Survival Guide 6 stars. But I have to remove one star as the book failed to take into account business continuity issues.

Clearly a Zombie invasion could have a catastrophic impact on the infrastructure required to operate the global economy. I urge you to commence the development of/or the updating of zombie invasion preparedness plans for responding to the widespread socioeconomic disruptions that would result from having large numbers of people infected or eaten. Your business and retirement could depend on it.

A zombie invasion will not affect IT systems directly, but it would likely cause considerable economic disruption through its impact on the workforce and on business activity. The good news is that this is one virus which won't be running amok through our systems. Some possible strategies include:

* Make your workforce aware of the zombie invasion threat and the steps your business is taking to prepare for it.
* Assess your business continuity preparedness for this type of workforce outage scenario and try to improve it (if necessary).
* Assign someone in your business to track the media for unusual occurrences such as the unusual deaths, people being bitten and infected, secret police or military activity or anything else that may indicate the start of a zombie invasion . He or she should regularly review business continuity plans and update them in response to new information.
* Establish or expand policies and tools that enable employees to work from home with broadband access, appropriate barricade security measures and network access to applications.
* Expand online transaction and self-service options for customers and partners.
* Work with customers and partners to minimize any disruption by developing coordinated crisis response capabilities.
* Bulk-buy flowers and coffins as part of your business continuity preparedness for a permanent workforce outage scenario.
* Assign a special response teams in your business to as snipers on the roof and on the perimeter to shoot anything that is undead.
* Set up email auto-responders to communicate: "Sorry, I'm out of the office due to death."
* Barricade uninfected employees in their homes with broadband access and then paint a red cross on the door. This reduces the need to travel to and from work in a zombie infested landscape.
* Leave a full set of instructions on how to reboot the servers for the next generation emerging blinking into the post-apocalyptic landscape.
* Try to stay calm. But be prepared to relocate to a remote and defensible location at a moments notice.

Excellent book with very few oversights and characterised by clear, logical thinking. Maybe it’s an English thing (Remember Agincourt! “V”) but for skull splitting, close combat, hand to hand weaponry you just can’t top the ol’ mediaeval War Hammer. So lethal that even the armoured knights wanted them banned for being “unchivalrously” efficacious. Also, much easier to get hold of, than the WW1 Trench Spike. My only other point is not a criticism, but I was very disappointed to find out that in reality zombies bore no memory of their previous habits. Part of my escape & evasion plan involved heading for a nearby vegetarian community. In the worst case scenario of an infection taking hold, I was hoping to be surrounded by zombies who would be chronically conflicted by their former dietary habits, thus rendering them reluctant to eat me, only to ultimately stagnate in a state of deep unresolved depression. Oh well, plan B, then! PS. When getting a nightsight for your gun, remember to go for Image Intensifying rather than thermal. Zombies have a rotten heat signature (literally!).

I’ve read World War Z, and I loved it. It’s not the common horror book but a plausible narration that captures de mind. This one is the same: written as a manual, it speaks in a logical way of approaching an ilogical threat. And even if zombies don’t exist, the need for “thinking out of the box” remains.
