Pros:
You can peel and core apples probably 3x as fast. So if you were taking an hour to cut apples for pies, you can easily cut that down to 20 minutes. Spend that time with your family or baking, not peeling apples. So the peeler basically pays for itself giving you back your time.
Peels and cores and spiralizes. I used the attachment so the whole apple turns into one spiral. Just quickly use one or two passes with a knife to turn that stack into half-moons or quarters (or smaller if required), and it's ready to go directly into your baking. So easy.
Cons:
Doesn't auto-start very well. There are some tricks you need to know. Like you have to jam the apple on pretty hard directly through the core, or else the apple may spin without "starting" and this can harm the unit. I also almost always had to push the peeler gently to start it. There is a safety lever for this. But it's not "idiot-proof". It requires a little finesse and you'll mess up one or two apples as you figure it out.
Overall:
Massive time saver. If you only go to the apple farm once a year for one bushel of apples, the unit still pays for itself in saved time. Add all the other possibilities to that, from potatoes gratin to zucchini spiral noodles (zoodles), and it's totally worth the investment for any home cook.
Finally, my spiralizer took a dive to the garbage. I was getting tired of having to dig it out, set it up and then get to spiralizing. Too many pieces, blades got stuck, I hated the suction cup feet and it was 80% plastic. I found myself using a small hand held spiralizer more often. So, I wasn't spiralizing as often as I had anticipated.
Yesterday, I used the KitchenAid Spiralizer attachment for the first time (just received it a couple days ago)...so simple and easy to set up! I Love KA Attachments. I only needed to connect 2 pieces into the main attached unit...the spiral attachment desired and the piece for holding the fruit/veggie securely. It was too simple. The instructions were simple to follow, and it includes a guide for each attachment blade, type of veggie/fruit and speed to use. My KA Pro 6 (15 years old) handles KA attachments with ease and this Spiralizer Plus attachment was no exception. My "Kitchen Magician" (Pro 6 adopted name) doesn't even get warm, the organic zucchini and squash sliced quickly with ease and all uniform in thickness. Even with cutting my zucchini and squash in half, the "veggie noodles" were super long...longer than premade spaghetti noodles.
All Parts are so easy to clean (pre and post use), and the included box (sturdy cardboard with magnetic close and foam dividers) is sturdy enough and houses each piece conveniently. I'll eventually just put these in a drawer for even more ease of use (like I do with all my other KA attachments), but the "box" will last a few years. I love that the majority of this attachment is all metal. The large main piece is solid with only enough strong plastic/nylon for inserting/attaching the blades, and the blade attachments just have enough for snapping into place. It's simple and made well for it's purpose. I will definitely enjoy using this even daily...very convenient and easy to use.
I haven't attempted using harder vegetation like "beets" even with my junky table top spiralizer. I can't wait to test this KA attachment out further. It's built sturdy, and I believe it will handle well...just need to follow the suggested blades and stand mixer speeds, in the included guide. As a caution to anyone using their KA Stand Mixer for use with attachments, ALWAYS feel the top of the machine...if it gets warm, stop and let it rest...then finish. It is very rare for my Pro 6 to get slightly warm with using any attachment, but machines outside of the professional line will warm up quicker.
I definitely recommend, but I generally recommend KA attachments to those with pro line/professional series; which are built to be work horses in the kitchen...the motor is important; especially if you'll be using attachments and your mixer often; like I do.
