I wish I hadn't bought this.......
1 Star
I wish I hadn't bought this.......
I have never owned a Dyson before, but I had heard good things about them. My wife wanted a cordless vacuum for quick clean ups downstairs and I try to make a habit of not buying junk. I did some research and was most impressed by the Dyson V8's 40 minute runtime. Couple that with Dyson's reputation of high tech, forward thinking and I was sure that paying three times more than most other cordless vacuums was a solid idea. Once I received the vacuum and read through the manual I felt taken advantage of. Dyson set their own bar so high in their own description that I had no choice other than do be sorely disappointed in the V8. Here are my four concerns:1). This is by far my biggest complaint. The other three complaints are minor, but this one isn't. The only battery spec you will ever see advertised as of 8/30/16 is "up to 40 minutes". In fact, the box says "40 minute" with a picture of a battery. The box has no asterisk, and no explanation. Once you open the box and read the material, you will find that this vacuum only has 25 minutes of battery when used on low suction with the motorized carpet head, and only 7 minutes on night suction. I have no issue with the 7 minutes on high, my issue is with the 25 minutes on low suction with the carpet tool installed. I feel like that should be explained everywhere they advertise "40 minutes". Honestly, I feel like they're deceptive; and I thought Dyson, as a company, was above that.2). Dyson consistently advertises their products as "carbon free" which means they are carbon brush free, known as brushless. They even included a small white booklet (see picture) with this very vacuum basically saying that the electric motor hasn't changed in 100 years, but Dyson is so freaking awesome that they use brushless motors. Well, on page 12 of the user manual, under "operation" it says "this machine has carbon fiber brushes." (See picture) So basically I'm still not clear if this motor is an awesome Dyson technologically superior advanced "brushless" motor, or the old brushed version that they say hasn't changed in 100 years. Why is this relevant? Brushless motors are stronger and use less battery. Also, brushes are a consumable item, meaning they wear out and need replacement.3). Dyson has always advertised that their vacuums never lose suction. The owners manual extensively covers how to unclog several areas of the vacuum.(see picture) The fine print of the warranty says that clogs are not covered by warranty. (See picture). So if my vacuum is clogged, does it lose suction? Of course it does.4). There are two filters that need to be washed in water and air dried for 24 hours at least once a month. I have never had to wash filters on my vacuum before. Maybe I'm just getting old and behind the times on this one, and if so, you can just disregard this criticism. Just be aware, you'll need to "wash" you vacuum monthly.Basically, I'm mostly disappointed with Dyson's marketing and advertising tactics. I feel lied to, I feel cheated. If you understand that this vacuum has a 25 minute runtime when used with the carpet brush or hard floor brush, then it's really hard to justify paying $599. Shortly, the Dyson rep will chime in and explain that you indeed can achieve 40 minute run time using the crevice tool or duster. That's great, maybe you should explain that when you advertise your specs. I, like most people, planned on using the hard floor and carpet brush heads exclusively, so I will exclusively get 25 minutes, never 40. For that reason alone, this is going back.

This is one expensive cordless vacuum so I give it 5 starts realizing it's priced out of many people's idea of reasonable. BUT it is a magnificent piece of equipment and perfect for my needs. Given my needs - the price is reasonable.

Initial use experience: I opened the box and "read" the instructions very briefly. The instructions are pictures - and I prefer words. But I get that they sell world-wide and this is efficient. Anyway, the instructions are not necessary to get the thing operational. The attachment points for attaching the wand to the handle and the accessory to the wand are marked and obvious. Everything attaches with a satisfying CLICK. And more amazing, the unit had juice in it so no more than 90 seconds after getting the box open I was vacuuming.
PROS: Up and ready to use in seconds. Simple to click the parts together.
CONS: I would prefer a choice of words rather than just pictures. But it's not a big enough problem to down grade my 5 stars

Use Experience: Using the V8 is easy as can be. It handles quickly and it's very articulated heads makes cleaning in corners and around legs of furniture easy. Changing accessories, or going from the "electric broom" to hand-held mode couldn't be easier. Again, everything snaps together with a pronounced click. The wall mount is very well thought out. You string the charger into a spring mounted area that allows you to snap the unit into the wall mount AND connect the charger in one quick motion.
My particular use is that we live out in the country on a long gravel driveway. Dirt is a way of life out here. But mostly we track in dirt and as much as we wipe our feet, or take off our boots as soon as we get inside - the area around the door has dirt. If left unattended we could grow tomatoes there after a while. And worse, that gets tracked deeper into the house. We have a very open plan so entry leads into kitchen leads into living room. So I need to be able to clean up that entry area - and part way into the kitchen often.
The V8 on max makes very short work of that. It picks up everything and leaves the floor much cleaner than I can get it with a broom. And since I have it hanging in the laundry room right by the door which everyone uses - it's handy and not a chore at all to grab a few times a day.
PROS: Works wonderfully for my use - easy peasy to change accessories or go to hand held version. Good suction, great cleaning
CONS: It took me a while to figure out which accessory is used for what function. I'm sure some people found it totally intuitive. I didn't. But again, the negative is not worth lowering the score.

ABOUT THE BATTERY LIFE: OK, I've heard people complain that the long battery life is only on the lower suction and with some of the accessories. Well for my use, I run it on Max, with the motorized head - which is supposed to only give 7 minutes of use. So far I've never gone below 2 out of 3 bars on the charging light. If I were using this as my primary and only vacuum - that would be frustrating. But to spot clean - even spot cleaning the whole house, going here and there, not running it turned on through the whole house - I don't take 7 minutes. FOR ME - the battery life is fine. But consider how you will use the unit.

Cleaning and maintenance: Here's where I might have gone 4 or 4.5 stars. But I'm sticking with 5 because the design is so elegant and easy to use that the fact that I had trouble with it and had to call Dyson didn't cause me to downgrade it. Here's what you do to empty the canister. You lift one lever, lift the big "thing" on top of the unit up, and it automatically opens the whole bottom of the canister dropping all your dirt into your garbage can. Very easy and elegant. But... the first time I did it it worked fine. The second time I couldn't get it to drop open the canister bottom. I called tech support and they told me not to be afraid to really give it a strong yank - which I did and it opened out. Once opened the dirt falls out. Unlike other vacuums that require taking out bags holding the vacuum in an awkward position - so long as you're holding the unit over the garbage can it empties easily.
I also found that one of the filters, at least where we are with all of the fine dirt, as well as gravel clogs up quickly. So I've had to wash that out already - and I've only used the unit for 2 weeks. But again, it's heavy use.I found out that I needed to wash it out by calling tech support, which answered promptly and listened while I ran the machine and diagnosed the problem then and there.
PROS: Empties easily and completely. Excellent phone in tech support.
CONS: Seriously, I'm not that weak and I really needed to yank at the unit to get the canister to open. But again - for my use that seems a minor problem. And my husband has no problem opening the unit.

Summary: True confessions - I've bought 2 vacuums before this to address the dirty entry way problem. One was a small shop vac and the other a corded hand held. Neither came close to the Dyson V8 in solving my specific cleaning problem. It also does other things - no doubt. But this is perfect for spot cleaning with major OOMPH. If that's your need - this is your machine.

I purchased the Dyson (214730-01) V8 Absolute Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner in August 2016, and it has been a game-changer in my home cleaning routine. The convenience of a cord-free and hassle-free vacuum, combined with powerful suction, makes everyday cleaning an effortless task.

The V8 Absolute shines with its impressive run time. It offers up to 40 minutes of consistent performance when using a non-motorized tool, and the suction power in Max mode is a robust 115 AW. This vacuum is not just about power; it’s also about intelligent design. It’s lightweight and versatile, making it easy to maneuver around the house. The instant release trigger is a thoughtful feature, ensuring battery power is only used during cleaning.

One of the highlights for me has been the up to 30 minutes of fade-free power with the soft roller cleaner head, ideal for hard floors. The direct drive cleaner head is another standout, providing up to 8 minutes of fade-free power in Max mode, which is perfect for deeper carpet cleaning.

The whole machine HEPA filtration system is a blessing, especially for those sensitive to allergens. It captures particles effectively and expels cleaner air. Moreover, the filtration system is a washable lifetime filter, adding to the convenience.

Powered by the Dyson digital motor V8, this vacuum is engineered to pick up both ground-in dirt and fine dust from carpets and hard floors efficiently. After several years of use, it still performs exceptionally well, which speaks volumes about its durability and the quality of its design.

The original price I paid was $599.00, and seeing its current price drop to $399.99 is fantastic. It's a testament to the product's design and longevity that it's still part of Dyson's product lineup, especially when most companies frequently change models.

If the time comes to replace it, I would definitely consider buying it again. It's not just a vacuum; it's a long-term investment in maintaining a clean and healthy home environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reconditioned and works like a charm
Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2019
I was nervous buying a reconditioned Dyson but have had no issues with my reconditioned V8 Absolute. I had read V8 absolute vs V10 absolute review by Consumer Reports, and was keen to get the V8 over the V10 based on their assessment. Could not source the V8 absolute new in Canada so opted to go the reconditioned route. It was “as new” as advertised, and what brought me comfort was the fact that it is reconditioned by Dyson and you are able to register the reconditioned product with Dyson on their website. It works very well (I have a corded dyson which has been gathering dust since getting this stick). I am able to vacuum a hardwood, carpet and tile home of 1200SF or so in one charge. The only thing that’s a bit off putting is that it simply stops working when the battery runs out — no warning. It takes about 4hours to fully recharge. I opted not to have it plugged in all the time as I store it in a closet that doesn’t have a wall plug within reach of the recharging cord. This isn’t an issue; I just make sure I recharge it before I hang it back up in the closet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth it
Reviewed in Australia on January 30, 2019
Look this is a lot of money for a vacuum cleaner, but honestly it's worth it. I never would've thought I'd pay this much money for a vacuum but I figured if a dishwasher or washing machine is worth it, then this is at least worth a try and it is. Purely for the convenience of it. Suction is amazing and I initially had reservations around whether the battery would last long enough but no issues so far. Because you don't need to pull out a big vacuum and plug it in everytime, you can literally pull it out for 30sec and clean a rug which then means your overall weekly vacuming or whatever it may be isn't needed. You can do it in bursts whenever needed. That being said I have vacumed a 3 bedroom house and still had plenty of battery left. I think this is because it is a trigger which means it's only powered on when you're actively vacuming. If you're moving around you just release the trigger
