Alexandra Kenin grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey, and is proud to be a Jersey girl. She studied French and business at Georgetown University and then spent a few years working and playing in New York City. While living in New York, she took a fateful vacation to San Francisco, which influenced her to move to the City by the Bay. But before making it out west, she had some more work to do. She earned an MBA from the Wharton School and an MA from the Lauder Institute—both at the University of Pennsylvania.

After graduation, she moved to San Francisco and worked as a product marketing manager at Google for nearly five years. After leaving Google, she began exploring the city, eventually coming up with the idea for her urban hiking tour company, Urban Hiker SF. Urban Hiker SF was founded in 2012 and explores the stairways, hills, and hiking trails of the city. Alexandra is passionate about travel and tries to visit a new country every year (she’s up to forty-nine so far). When she’s not traveling or out on the trails, she lives in San Francisco with her partner, Brett; her son Dylan; and her dog, Jodie.

I enjoyed reading about the Urban Trails around the Bay Area.

Love this book. Over the years, I have purchased a few different editions of the San Francisco Stairway Walks book (which has been in print for more than 30 years)  Stairway Walks in San Francisco: The Joy of Urban Exploring  and that book is full of useful information, but it is also often frustrating because the routes are convoluted for no good reason other than to shorten them and make them loop back to the starting point (sometimes via a boring route). This Urban Trails book avoids that problem by creating routes that are direct and interesting and not caring if the endpoint is miles away from the starting point if public transit is easily available. The book includes detailed color maps and photos, as well as public transit information so you can easily take the bus back to the start point. You are walking in a city where public transit is very convenient (if sometimes very crowded). The author also suggests nearby walks so you can easily link several together to create an all-day adventure (really hard to do with the Stairway Walks book).

The 50 hikes in this book will take you all year to complete if you do 1 a week and most are worth repeating, so you have years of fun for your purchase price. The size of this book is compact enough that I don't mind carrying it in my backpack.

I do recommend reading the Stairway Walks book as well since that book has more verbose stories about historical sites along the walks, but this Urban Trails books has plenty of stairs as well.

Urban trails is a very practical book for anyone wanting to explore this one of a kind city that is San Francisco. Alexandra clearly loves to hike and it shows in the writing. Easy to ingest, well organized, and comprehensive. What separates great books from good ones is the care and love an author brings to their craft, and this is as sincere and earnest as it gets. You want to hear about all the amazing urban trails SF has to provide? You can't do much better than let Alexandra be your guide, she's a local and no one knows SF urban trails better than her, proof is in the pudding, see for yourself!

Most books I own sit on a shelf most of the time. Not this one. When I'm not reading it, it sits by my front door, next to my jacket. Well curated hikes, with clear directions and good maps. I recommend it to anyone interested in exploring San Francisco on foot.

I've been an avid hiker for most of my adult life, and never really considered "urban hiking" to turn into one of my favorite ways to hike until I moved to San Francisco!

Urban hiking is now my #1 thing to do in the city, and I take tourists and visitors on as many awesome urban hiking trails as possible when they visit. There's really no other way to get to know the city, and Kenin's book highlights all the best trails and hikes to really get a taste of what SF is all about.

I like how she notes the length and difficulty of the hikes, so I can strategize my hike based on timing or who I am hiking with. The size of the book is awesome, and fits nicely into my small backpack, so it's super easy to carry around and reference. I love all the directions on where to start the hikes, and having it as a book v. on my phone is an awesome way to stay present...As I purposely get out of the office or house, and into the nature of San Francisco.

I recommend this book to tourists and locals, and believe it will be a staple book for seeing all of SF's urban treasures for years to come.

I've been waiting too long for a book exactly like this! I've lived in San Francisco for almost 10 years, and this made me fall in love with San Francisco all over again --- I discovered so many new trails and walks and history of SF in kneading through this. The book is well written and descriptive with directions and maps, and most importantly for a guidebook, COMPACT enough to carry around easily and flip through. Highly recommend for not just tourists, but almost-natives like me!

Urban Trails makes the perfect gift for that new person just moving to San Francisco. Not only does it allow you to explore different areas of the city and take vetted trails, but it also has fun tidbits of history that will make you feel like you're an instant expert on the history and mysteries of San Francisco. Even if you've lived in San Francisco for years, I guarantee you will learn something new by buying and relying on this book. Alexandra Kenin has clearly put in countless hours to not only explore, but present a wide variety of options for hikes, but also put them together in a compact and visually appealing way. Highly recommend!
