4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 3,810 ratings

Ever since the birth of his daughter, Nalla, Zsadist has been regressing further and further into the life he led before he met Bella, his beautiful shellan. He has been waking up in cold sweats due to nightmares from his past, hasn't made love to his wife, and won't hold his baby girl, for fear that he might hurt her. While Nalla's presence had consisted of only joy and excitement in first couple months of her life, now it seems to be driving the couple apart. Bella is afraid that she and Nalla just may need to leave her hellren.

But then Zsadist gets injured on a mission to fight the lessers and because he hasn't been feeding from Bella, almost loses his life. Could this near-death experience create the motivation to pull this couple back together? Or has the gap between them spanned too far for redemption?

Father Mine, a novella set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series is a story that I somehow seem to have missed out on when I first started reading the series in a frenzy. Anyone who has read my reviews on the books in the series would know that Zsadist is by far, my most favorite hero, and it is with excellent reason.

In Father Mine, the focus is on the continued struggle Zsadist has in terms of his past. A past that is as horrific as they come, where he had been taken as a blood slave, kidnapped at a tender age, and all sorts of atrocities subjected to him by the female that had kept him captive.

Zsadist comes with a wealth of pain in his heart, a soul that had numbed down in order to protect himself, an anger that had been destructive in its force and zeal that had simmered down upon mating with Bella. Even that had not been the easy journey that most romance stories would have made out of it. No. Zsadist had to work for every inch of peace he carved for himself, and the pregnancy along the way had just been another curveball that life had thrown his way.

It is in Father Mine that Zsadist’s past once again rears its ugly head in the form of nightmares that are all too realistic for him. Even though Bella knows that Zsadist’s inability to connect with their precious daughter Nalla comes from elements of his past, she has no idea of the depth of the horror that still has the ability to lock him down and get the best of him.

I believe that Father Mine and its conclusion was a much needed one in terms of Zsadist and Bella’s relationship. JR Ward’s love for Zsadist’s character shines through whenever she writes about him. Not that she doesn’t give it her all when it comes to other characters. But there is something special about the way she takes care of Zsadist, which is perhaps one of the reasons why a large percentage of readers fall, and fall hard for Zsadist and remain Zsadist loyalists throughout the series.

Bella’s insecurities as a woman who has given birth, whose physical and mental health had been subjected to a whole lot of ordeal in the process is also taken into context. The way Zsadist erased every single one of her doubts was just the icing on the cake when it came to this novella.

Loved, loved, loved this novella. An excellent installment in terms of Bella and Zsadist’s story to give their story the ultimate conclusion. Because just like real life doesn’t serve you with a happily ever after on silver platter, this made their love, pain, and struggles all the more believable and their happily ever after that much more worth it.

Recommended for fans of Zsadist!

Final Verdict: Sheer perfection is Father Mine in every single sense. Nothing more, nothing less.

Readers met and fell in love with Zsadist and Bella in J. R. Ward's third New York Times bestselling novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lover Awakened.

As a former blood slave, Zsadist bore the scars from a past filled with suffering and degradation until Bella came along and helped heal his emotional wounds. Now, though, with the birth of their child, the demons of his past have been resurrected, called forth by the innocent eyes of his beloved daughter, Nalla. Unless Bella and Nalla can bring him back with their love, he may be lost to them forever.

Father Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood #6.5) -

Short and sweet. Pure perfection! Zsadist and Bella were already one of my favorite couples in this series and this added little bonus was just what I wanted. If I could score it higher than a 5 I would! There were so many good moments in this book but I think my absolute favorite parts were J.R. Ward’s descriptions of Nalla. How adorable is this kid??? She is gonna break some hearts… well if Zsadist doesn’t bash the suitors faces in first.

SPOILERS!!!

A small part of me is glad that Z couldn’t remove his bands… I completely get the psychology of it and it may have helped him on the surface but those bands, as horrible as they are, have made him who is. This strong, powerful, and protective male wouldn’t be who Bella loves if he had not crawled out from such despair. Darkness is sometimes the only way we can appreciate the light…

Oh! My fav couple Mary and Rhage… baby drama. Tough stuff. I can’t wait to see how that plays out. Now onto the next one!

This novella was short, sweet, and to the point. Ward returns readers to the world of the BDB with the same in your face writing that we’ve come to know and love from her while also giving readers a chance to revisit one of my favourite couples and get to know them on a much more personal level. I quite enjoyed this quick divergence from the usual action packed, gritty lives of the men of the BDB. Seeing Z in the home setting, dealing with the aftermath of his life while caught up in the current circumstances he finds himself in was eye opening. Bella’s side of the equation was equally intriguingly developed.

On its own this was an ok story, but as part of the series it was fantastic. Ward filled in a great deal about the relationship between Bella and Z while also further developing Z as an individual, both in the past and the present. I loved this jaunt back into their relationship that gave me a much fuller picture of this couple and where they stand now.

This was really good book I love this couple. Since the birth of his daughter, Nalla, Zsadist has been regressing further and further into the life he led before he met Bella he is not feeding he won't hold his daughter or talk to her about what's going and to make matter's worse they haven't had sex in months. Bella has had enough she tells Z that she is leaving on the night that she calls Rev her brother and ask if she can stay at one of his house's Z is hurt when he falls through a floor trying to help someone that two lesser had in a house that they were checking out. All Z can think about his getting back to his Bella. When he gets home they talk and he tells her that he is having dreams of his time as a slave and when he is afraid of holding his daughter. These two has some really hot sex and I thought that it was really sweet how he held Nalla and read to her. I also liked how Mary and Dr. Jane was able to help both Bella and Z. This was a really sweet short quick read with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to listening to my next book in this series.

❤️ Z's story was both hard to read and so filling to see his progress through everything he's been through. This little short novella just ties everything up in a perfect little bow! 🎀
I loved every minute of this. Thank you J.R. Ward for adding in this heart touching story!
