If you've never used this type of binder clip, note that although the photos you've seen might always show them with the chrome-looking parts up, and that's how they have to be in order to squeeze the clip open to put paper or whatever inside them, after you clip one onto something, it's very useful to be able to flip those parts down so that they lay flat on the surface of the paper. That makes the paper mostly flat and therefore the clip doesn't have to create a bulky piece that would make a stack of papers not fit well along with or between other stuff. Like a paperclip, but must sturdier and firmer in its grip, it can fold down and get out of your way.
Also, these can be useful for things other than just small stacks of paper you might not want to staple together, and/or small stacks of paper you need to be able to add to or remove pages from easily (such that staples wouldn't work). I'm guessing that most people see these and just think of office-type or paperwork applications, but there's a whole world out there of stuff these can be useful for, such as...
I also use these and larger binder clips to hold non-paper things together because they create such a firm grip (MUCH more tight than a paperclip, and with a larger range of thicknesses possible for a given clip size, particularly if you compare the useful range of a specific paperclip size).
For example, I use binder clips like these to hold the tops of open potato chip bags together (and yes, I know they make other clips just for that purpose that are much wider, often known as "chip clips," but chip clips also take up tons more space when not in use, especially when you have several of them as you know if you've put a few chip clips on a shelf for storage).
Another random example (among countless potential examples) based on what happens to be in my view at the moment: I have drinking straws in the bag they came in that's open at the top, and without a clip the straws were coming out against my will. One of these tiny clips holds it closed reliably and very firmly, yet is very easy to remove when needed.
There are lots of potential uses of these things, especially given how many things come in plastic bags that don't reseal on their own (such as Ziplocks) after you open them.
And unlike those huge chip clips, these binder clips (including larger ones that might work better for chips, actually) take up so very little space when not in use. So they're handy to keep around, taking up very little space and able to be stored just about anywhere (such as the corner of a kitchen drawer), so that when your random clipping needs arise, you'll have a way to keep bags firmly sealed off and the contents inside, or can use them in other ways such as securing a string to a board, or whatever. The possibilities are seemingly infinite! (I feel a little weird right now getting excited about binder clips, but truly, something so very inexpensive with so many practical uses is kinda exciting, & once you start experimenting with all the things you can usefully clip yourself, I think you'll share in my excitement, even if you're not an office supply nerd like I am).
Note that although you might think that because they only clip a much smaller area than a chip clip, they wouldn't keep the chips nearly as fresh. But I find that binder clips work at least as well, maybe even better, after folding over the top of a bag a couple times and then clipping it shut. These might work better because chip clips have a very weak grip relative to these, which tighten down a WHOLE lot more, holding the folded bag top in place very firmly all the way across, even with just one binder clip.
(The rest of this review addresses Amazon's shipping & the "Add-on" program, so if you only want info about the product itself, you can stop reading here.)
It was odd (& wasteful) that Amazon sent these two tiny boxes inside of a massive, oversized bubble envelope, and with nothing else in the envelope. The waste of that huge bubble envelope is not too extensive given that they didn't include any packing materials in the envelope, but I find it worth noting because they did not send these tiny little things (even the entire box is tiny) along with ANY of the many other items I purchased in the same order, which is the purpose of "Add-on" program (i.e., according to Amazon, to save on shipping costs by offering inexpensive items when you buy at least $49 of other stuff from Amazon so they can sell us things that would cost too much to send on their own!). I know stuff comes from different distribution centers many times, as well as different sellers, but my order had a lot of Amazon stuff and I live near a very major Amazon center, so it's hard to believe they couldn't have thrown these inside one of the several boxes of other stuff they sent me, all of which had lots of room. I can only assume that somehow among all that stuff, these binder clips had to come from a place that none of my other stuff came from, OR Amazon just doesn't have their shipping procedures organized effectively (yet). I'm writing this paragraph in hopes that someone at Amazon will take note and perhaps they can work on organizing shipping a bit better. I love the idea of minimizing wasteful packaging, and to be fair, they have improved that a lot generally-speaking.
They serve as a good substitute for hardware clamps for small jobs securely holding things being glued together. And, this size and the next larger one are effective, while in the kitchen, for holding cookbooks open to a particular recipe when the spine refuses to remain open and lay flat on the counter. There are an endless array of ideas all over the internet. Basically, when it comes to indisputable usefulness, binder clips are the equivalent to a roll of duct tape
