Unfortunately, true to the very many complaints, this fountain died halfway into this summer season. I used it for part of last summer and thought it was the cutest thing. It always worked and the other day---poof! Ankway needs to address this and show how to troubleshoot, especially if water is in it. I have always kept this clean. The filter is clear as is the inside after I removed the filter to check on it. I will not buy another. Obviously it is not water proof as Ankway claims. I hope someone from the company reads this and all the very many complaints that are on various websites, including youtube.
I can't say enough good things about this product which I bought along with Best Choice Products Pedestal Bird Bath Garden Decor . It is the cutest thing and works only when the sun hits it. It does not charge up from the sun, and this is mentioned in the product details. So don't be surprised when it doesn't work on a cloudy day. It has little suction cups that hold it in place in the middle of the bird bath and the bottom stays submerged . It comes with different attachments that give a variety of sprays. I have had it for about 3 weeks, and so far it has been working great as indicated. Everyone who sees it loves it. You can also put it in a wide bowl on a deck if you want to relax and listen to the spray of the water.
In full sun, the unit sprays way too high, even after putting on some of the diffusing nozzles included. So, especially if it is breezy, it will drain the birdbath quickly. The pump continues running even without water (there is no "safety" trigger that keeps the pump from running dry). Needless to say, that will shorten the unit's life.
The unit consists of a foam disk with a solar panel with a small DC pump underneath. The foam disk causes the unit to float at the top of the water and the panel harvests solar energy to run the pump.
Because of the design, one drawback is that there is no way to secure the unit to the center of the birdbath. A suction cup is included, but that only works on smooth glass or enamel surfaces. For rough surfaces (i.e. your average cement/ceramic birdbath bowl), the instructions recommend putting small stones or pebbles at the bottom of the birdbath bowl to cradle the pump housing so that the unit will not drift around the dish. But, that works marginally well; as as the water evaporates/sprays out, the unit will come to rest on the pebbles and unless the pebbles you use are all symmetrical, it will come to rest crooked like a poorly landed spaceship and spray water sideways, further draining out the birdbath bowl. If you fill the birdbath too much, the pebbles will not work and the unit will float over the pebbles and drift to the edge of the bowl by the breeze (because it is so light, a light breeze is all that is needed).
Overall a clever idea but needs a bit more refinement to be considered a good product, such as regulating the voltage in full sun, including some kind of trigger to avoid running dry and a means to secure the unit to a rough birdbath dish (I think a small weight on a short string would do), and I may try that next.
I did NOT receive this unit for free or a discount (why are all reviews on amazon of late of people who get items for free?) so this is a real review.
