Roland Colton was awarded a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and a juris doctorate from the University of San Diego School of Law. He has had a long career as a litigator and trial attorney. Trained in his youth as a classical pianist, he is a frequent performer at public and private gatherings. He also possesses a passion for architecture and the French language. Colton lives with his family in Southern California and France.

5-stars! Forever Gentleman by Roland Colton is a historical fiction novel chronicling the fortunes, and misfortunes, of Nathan Sinclair. Nathan is a talented architect, and sometimes musician, living in London in the 1860s. Yet, all is not well for young Mr. Sinclair. He faces a debt thanks to a client who has been unable to pay, leaving him at the mercy of a loan broker. Still, Nathan does not despair, though he desperately seeks to pay off his debt. Then, while giving an impromptu concert at the home of a wealthy aristocrat, Nathan runs into a startlingly beautiful woman. Little does he know, his encounter with Jocelyn Charlesworth will change his life drastically, and force Nathan to choose between true love and the fulfilment of all his wildest dreams. All the while, outside forces and unexpected encounters threaten the life of our main character. Will he manage to come out of it on the side of honor, or greed?

Writing Forever Gentleman was a love affair for me, intersecting my passions for music, architecture, art, and the French language. In this regard, I have attempted to weave a tapestry of my passions as a backdrop to a story of romance, mystery and suspense.

As the book began to take form, I became committed to historical accuracy and spent thousands of hours researching life during the nineteenth century, including poring over numerous journals, newspapers and publications from that era. My objective was to immerse the reader in the sights, smells, and sounds of Victorian London, including authentic references to concerts, plays, and other venues referred to in the book.

The novel endeavors to portray Victorian London at its best and worst--a city of beauty and brilliance, but also a city steeped in filth and despair. Every effort has been made to describe the genius of the timeless music that accompanied this distant, melancholy world. While many of the compositions in the book are well known, sadly, other beautiful works have all but disappeared from the concert stage.

It would give me great pleasure if Forever Gentleman inspires readers to search and discover some of these abandoned compositions.

Roland Colton attended the University of Utah on a baseball scholarship, receiving a bachelor's degree; he later played semi-pro baseball in Southern California leagues as a pitcher.

Colton also has a juris doctorate degree from University of San Diego School of Law, and has had a long career as a litigator and trial attorney.

Colton has been an ethusiastic baseball fans all of his life. He was also trained in his youth as a classical pianist and is a free performer at public and private gatherings. He also possesses a passion for architecture, the French language, and lives with his family in Southern California and France.

Colton's first novel, 'Forever Gentleman,' was subsequently released as a music e-Version, wherein readers can listen to the beautiful music performed and described in the book, as it occurs in the story; the music e-Version is available through AppleBooks.

Colton's second novel, "Baseball Immortal," is a trilogy. The first book of the Trilogy, subtitled "The Second Coming of Ty Cobb" is now available for purchase from Kindle or in paperback. Book 2 of the trilogy ("Chasing Ghosts from Legends Past") will be released in July 2022 and Book 3 ("A Season Never to be Forgotten") will be released in October 2022.

History, Memorable Characters, Suspense and Intrigue

This excellent novel has many features to recommend it. The author begins by immersing the reader in Victorian-era London - with the protagonist, Nathan Sinclair, living on the wrong side of town. Through Nathan, the lifestyle of a typical Commoner is vividly portrayed, from the filth in the streets to the meager living conditions to the ever-looming threat of debtors' prison. This is contrasted with the lifestyle of the Gentry, London's elite, and provides an enlightening commentary on Britain's class system during the Victorian age. Throughout this build-up, the novel is true to its historical roots and appears to have been meticulously researched.

As the plot develops, the author does an extraordinary job of character development. Each of the main actors in the plot is given a unique, well-developed personality that is believable and gradually revealed to the reader through superb dialog and interaction with the other characters. The dialog in the novel is entertaining, never forced, and the occasional use of French adds to its believability and charm. This, in turn, allows the author to effectively engage the characters in a number of wild plot twists while staying true to their core personalities and values. He thus pulls off the difficult feat of combining memorable characters with surprising plot developments that still manage to maintain historical accuracy and believability. Characters of particular note include Nathan, Regina, Jocelyn, Sedgwick (my favorite) and the Duke of Wilmont.

As you may suspect, the novel becomes a real page-turner, mostly because of its romance, its memorable characters, the intrigue and suspense of the plot, and the surrounding atmosphere and mystery of Victorian-era London. Forever Gentleman offers the reader a supremely engaging story and an insightful history lesson at the same time. I highly recommend it!

Very fun, well researched historical novel

I had a lot of fun reading this book. The story kept me up late on several nights. I am a big fan of historical novels, and the author clearly did extensive research on England around the year 1870. All the historical details about the music and architecture and the law helped the story, and it had the side benefit of making me understand what England was like at that time. I always do my best to avoid spoilers, so I am going to steer clear of saying more than the way the story was concluded in the end kept my head twirling for days. I am the only person in my group of friends who has read the book, so I am doing my best to encourage others to read so I have someone to talk to. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next book by Roland. This is his first novel, and he hit it out of the park.

Transport yourself back in time, to Victorian England, activating all your senses as you feel the weather and smell city streets of old after a rain, just by reading chapter one. I was mesmerized by Colton's word craft, effortlessly weaving perennial themes of love and class struggle and money morality, including by painting with melodious musical and architectural references. As a financial lawyer, I was drawn to the story of debtors and creditors in days gone by, the cruelty of which influenced our country's adoption of a fairer bankruptcy system, albeit some legal horrors still play out today for some debtors, in only slightly less horrid ways. Buy it, read it, and tell your friends.

For a history buff and one who loves good fiction with interesting characters from all walks of life, this historically accurate and romantic novel absolutely fits the bill. To bring such an endeavor as the construction causing the "Great Stink" in London to life in extreme contrast to the elegance of the architecture and the magnitude of the music being created at that time with such realism was no easy feat. The success of this novel stems directly from the author's obvious love of music, architecture , history and people. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I rarely read fiction but when I started reading Forever Gentleman I became hooked. Immediately, I felt as if I had been transported back in time. The characters came alive to me on the pages of the book and I found myself being swept up in the suspense and drama. The twists and turns of the plot caught me off guard but kept me engaged from the beginning to the end. I can't wait to see this book made into a movie or mini series where the music will even further enhance the spellbinding story. I heartily recommend this book.

Reminiscent of Dickens

I received this book as an Early Reviewer. Since others have given a good synopsis of what the book is about, I will just describe my impressions of the book. Going in, I was expecting something along the lines of a Jane Austen novel. And while there are indeed some echoes of Austen in the lively bantering between the characters, I felt the book resembled Dickens even more, in scope and plot. The main character, Nathan Sinclair, is a typical Dickens' nearly perfect hero, along the lines of Nicholas Nickleby. Regina Lancaster is likewise an almost perfect love interest in the Dickens tradition. Like many of Dickens' works, the book felt as if it could have been serialized, with many cliff-hangers along the way. Some parts, especially the first third of the book felt too long and drawn-out to me. The French dialogue, when used, was frustrating for me as I don't know French and the translations weren't accessible until the end of the chapter. But the author obviously did his homework. His descriptions of the London of that time, the architecture and music were detailed and felt authentic. I felt like I knew and cared about the main characters and couldn't wait to find out how the the book would end. So overall, I say kudos to the author! Well done!
