I like how the writing is on both sides because the outlets can be put with the ground up or with the ground down. Some power prefer it with the ground up some people like it with the ground down. It actually does not matter which way you put it as long as it is wired correctly. Any way that was why I choose this one because most of the other ones I was looking at only had it on one side.
This also has a handy GFCI tester that I found very handy and works great.
Oh on a side note. A mistake on my part and I do not blame Amazon although I am not sure how it happened but some how I ordered 3 of these instead of ordering just 1. I didn't even realize until after I started tracking the order and saw it said 3 of. I looked closer and realized I did in fact order 3 and I paid the price for 3. Not a major deal though. I will just keep them all just in case I loose one. It would not be in case one breaks though because they have a life time warranty which I guess is also a plus. It would also not be the first tool I have more then one of. I have like 3 hammers and that was because I kept loosing them. I even lost my nice ladies one that was nice and light.
Speaking of ladies tools I would love to see this come in pink. Although I do not think it would sell as their are not many of us women who like this kind of stuff and like pink as well.
This is that tool. I fire up the generator, plug this in, and read the lights. I can instantly tell if I have power and ground and if I'm bonded or not. If I have the time I also connect my multimeter to make sure I have approximately 120 volts at 60 Hz, and I may monitor the voltage and frequency as I start to load the generator to make sure nothing sags as demand increases.
But the first line of defense is this plug, and it's easy enough to use that I can do it when the rain is sheeting down and I'm worried about getting the coffee maker running again. I keep it in a pouch with some other electrical tools so I can also use it to check if an outlet is live before I start working on things, though I ALWAYS verify with a multimeter in this case. I've shaken hands with 120V before and I don't enjoy it all that much.
This Gardner Bender (actually it seems to be a Sperry) not only checks for voltage by actually touching a wire, but can sense it in a wall and help you locate hidden wires. Also, you can put it near switches, outlets and devices and immediately know if power is on there. An aluminum laptop really lights the thing up, as do lamps, bulbs and appliances.
What makes this device work is that it has a tiny little rotating dial allowing the sensitivity to be turned up or down. Quite a wide range actually, from almost off to sensing from a distance.
If there is a live wire in a wall and you turn up the dial, the device will surely detect it and will in fact make it seem that there are wires everywhere in the wall. You have to turn the sensitivity down or move the device back from the wall to narrow it down. I found that you have to wave it back and forth, constantly changing the sensitivity and distance as you go along. You have to retrace your findings, see if you can get consistent results. Eventually you will get it down pretty good
It is a slow process with a lot of manipulation and still you can only get to within maybe six inches or so of some wires, but that is usually close enough. If I did this for a living where time was money I would investigate a more expensive device.
What I do not like is that the dial is very small and has no markings or tactile feeling so you really don't know where you are on the sensitivity scale. It is also easy to move it inadvertently. This really is annoying. A thumbwheel or simply a bigger dial with markings or clicks would be good, best being a digital readout.
This sensor is cheap and it works. Kind of a 3.5 stars really, but very useful still. Hecho en China.
