All around is a great camera, and I will recommend it, I have owned also all the Phantoms line up to the the 3 . Happy with DJI great products, haven't had to use their customer support so right now I am happy
I recommend getting this from the seller YaLa, By mistake they send me the charger cables of the European version, the promptly contacted me and send me the cable for USA plus a great gift.. I have been an online buyer for years and had never had this great experience,, Have to recommend YaLa seller because of their great service and good and honest values
I really didn't like it at first; I came SO close to returning it, but it grew on me as I learned a few tricks.
The two biggest issues for me are the Smartphone interface and its 20mm lens and 1+ meter minimum focus distance. It has other issues as well but I've also found solutions.
THE LENS PROBLEM
Combine a wide angle lens with a pretty far minimum focus distance there are just a lot of shots you can't take, or at least can't take well. At first I found it pretty useless for product videos; instructional videos, interviews, because you can't get tight enough or even fill the frame properly. The lens also has a noticeable amount of fisheye distortion up close. The X3 camera also has a very flat depth of field making the footage less interesting than I hoped.
Solution: If 1080p is acceptable for you, the DJI OSMO has pretty good digital zoom. Just make sure your at least 1 meter away from your subject and you can go up to about 1.4x without any significant loss of quality.
Outdoors you'll also need a Neutral Density filter to keep frame rates low and smooth. (I shoot at 1/50th second shutter) Unfortunately DJI decided to go with an absurd 35.8mm lens thread rather than the standard 37mm so you'll need proprietary filters. They make no screw-on macro lenses (which would really help) at this proprietary size.
Overall the video is pretty highly compressed but looks pretty good outdoors when shooting in manual. The OSMO uses a small sensor so like most small sensor cameras, it has a significant quality drop indoors or in low light.
THE PHONE PROBLEM
The app is actually a lot less buggy now than earlier users reported (I'm on Android with a modern phone, LG G4), but it still crashes almost everytime I start it up. Open the app again and it usually works.
Using a phone to frame shoots less than ideal. The fact is that these phones just aren't designed for use outdoors as a video monitor. They are too dim and have highly reflective, finger oil gathering screens. Plus I need my phone for other things and I don't want it's battery dead at the end of a shoot.
That said, DJI should really sell their universal phone mount on its own for car & bike attachment - it's the best I've ever seen. Fantastic and clever engineering. It is very heavy though compared to the OSMO and kind of awkward since its way out to one side.
SOLUTION: With a bit of practice I've been able to shoot with no phone. I use the phone at first to configure the camera, then turn it off and put it back in my pocket. It actually works surprisingly well. The OSMO points easily like a flashlight so if you don't need precise framing of the shot this is the way to go.
Alternatively, I've also used the Osmo in my right hand, while keeping my phone in my left not attached. This allows me to adjust the angle camera independently from the angel of the phone which works really well.
HORIZON LEVEL GLITCH
OSMO looses the horizon often while filming and develops a significant tilt. You can go into settings and manually or automatically calibrate the horizon. But that doesn't fix it for long, you'll have to repeat this again and again.
It's got other little issues as well, just seems to have a mind of its own sometimes.
SOUND
As other reviewers have mentioned the sound is atrocious; not even good enough for a scratch track. I don't really consider this a problem though because it has an audio jack and even just a $4 plug in mic can be used for vastly improved audio. I use a RODE VideoMicro and the OSMO 360 mount which provides fantastic sound.
Other Issues
It needs an integrated tripod mount. OSMO rosette is the only mounting point for anything, and while it has a standard 1/4 screw , its recessed into the grip you can't really screw in anything larger than DJIs proprietary accessories, at least not well.
The case it comes with is well made and cool, but has no room for the MUST HAVE accessories (microphone, mount, charger, and spare batteries, so its unfortunately it's kind of useless. It also opens from the bottom instead of the top which is a poor design choice.
HUGE loss of quality when doing time lapse; I have no idea why it can’t take a decent photo once every 2 seconds but it’s cant. The OSMO cuts the resolution down to just 720p and piles on the compression.
Very poor time lapse performance.
Significant loss of quality plus cropping when shooting 1080p 120fps. Works a bit better at low ISO, but certainly not quality 1080p.
Conclusion
I suspect that their X5 camera and a couple lenses would make this a far more versatile tool. But that's another $2000, and the OSMO platform is just isn't refined enough to invest that kind of money in right now. At that price it just needs to work. No phone, no gimmicks, or bugs, just pick it up and shoot.
But for what it does do: decent quality, wide angle, stabilized HD video, there is no better value. It still has a way to go though; and a lot of advertised features down really come through. If your planing to use it professionally, I'd suggest waiting until version 2.
SETUP: This device beeps the entire time until you unlock the head and connect to the camera. It will make you feel rushed and frustrated especially if you’re using the device for the first time.
SCRATCHED PHONE: Mounting a large iPhone to it may require you to remove your iPhone case. That’s the mistake I made because the harness scratched my phone, which is simply too big for this device.
SOUND: I knew I wasn’t going to get quality sound, but it’s way worse than I imagined. This device gets so loud that it almost entirely masks out recorded conversations.
If you’re looking for a quick from case to field solution, this device isn’t it unless you’ve got a lot of patience.
When this company starts taking UX and UI seriously I’ll consider their brand again.
Cheers.
