I have thirteen published books, several others in various stages of publishing, and am currently working on my next one... or two... or three.
TIES THAT BIND, from St. Martin's Press, just came out in August. Set firmly in the closed Mormon world, it promises a twisting plot and a surprise ending. One reader deemed it an "amazingly original" plot.
I have dabbled in both dark suspense and cozy mysteries, and am happy to be able to work in both genres.
I have also written for Penguin Putnam, Thompson Gale, BPP, and Sisterhood Publications. I do not have a thing for the word "Sister." I promise. A lot of my titles just kind of turned out that way. Maybe it's branding, and maybe it's eccentricity.
Or both.

There's a lot to like in this book: the humor is great, although I agree with the reviewer who said the jokes about Jenny not having enough to eat wear thin (hee-hee) after the third re-telling. And Jenny is immensely likeable, even though some of her dippiness here and there (like the confusion about cliches even though English is her first language) is a bit hard to swallow. She also has a few "too stupid to live" moments that clearly only exist to further the plot.
Tate Donovan is a sexy, interesting couterpart to Jenny, but their romance remains underdeveloped. That's probably because the series will continue, so no happily ever after was possible at this point. But I still thought the blurbs on the front promising a steamy romance overstate what actually occurs between them.
The author also does a great job setting the scene and describing life in a small Utah town. But there were a few times when my attention lagged, especially when the author drifted in and out of these long passages explaining things that had happened in the past that weren't especially relevant to the plot. There seemed to be a bit of padding taking the place of real character or plot development-- i.e. things sometimes seemed random or scattered. Bottom line for me: the book could have been more tightly edited.
And finally, I wasn't in love with the mystery. It was a little weak and the solution, when we finally get there, isn't particularly compelling.
That said, this is a promising start to a new series with an appealing heroine.
Somehow things begin to change with the poisoned cookie dough, the death of a dance-mom, and the disappearance of her star student. The supporting cast of characters is comparable to those in the Stephanie Plum series, minus one Grandma Lazur, because who can compare to her.
I really enjoyed the plot, and was guessing to end of the who-done-it. I can't wait to catch up with Jenny and her crew again.
I will definitely be visiting the Jenny T. Partridge dance studio in her next installment this fall.
Dance Instructor, Jenny T. Partridge is getting her troops ready for her annual 'take' on the Nutcracker ballet. While she is feverishly attempting to work with the children and calm the psycho Dance Moms, a murder occurs. The murder points directly to Jenny until she, herself, is attacked. Why was one of the Moms murdered, why was Jenny set up and does Detective Tate have a chance with her?
This story had more action and humor in it than I've read in a while. Jenny, is only trying to eke out a living and has to find ways to eat until 'tuition' day. There was tainted cookie dough fundraisers, bombings, physical attacks, shot missionaries and more in this tightly written tale of life in Ogden, Utah.
I will look up this author and hope she continued the series.
My only complaints were that I didn't need a daily countdown (multiple times, at that) until tuition day and Jenny being able to eat. I also thought the relationship with Wilson moved way too fast -- one minute she's a suspect in a murder and the next, for no apparent reason other than his crush on her, she's no longer a suspect and he's trailing her around like a dog in heat. It would've been much more believable if the author had built up the romance over several books.
I look forward to the next installment.

I wouldn't have wanted our heroine's life, but it was so fun watching how she got out of every awkward moment, every anxiety thrown her way, and yet it wasn't like those book that have your gut turning because you feel so bad for them. You just can't put the book down because you have find out how her artsy brain is going to figure it all out.
So many interesting characters and somehow it was written so that we can keep up with it all!! And how is she going to win the handsome guy, because...you know she will!
