Their reunion under siege
Unfortunately, Hope is far from done with Theo Taggart. Obsessed with her prize experiment, she will do anything to get him back. If the only way to finally break him of his past life is to kill Erin and his son, then she's only too happy to oblige…

This book, let me tell ya...
I'll admit going in that I was iffy on Erin. In the previous books, I couldn't quite put my finger on it. There was just something about her that kind of half rubbed me wrong. Like, I didn't mind the ball-buster attitude but there was just something. When Faith got her to rage after Theo "died" and then when she finally admitted she was pregnant and wanted to be a mother to TJ, my opinion started to change. Then she was able to look at finding Theo with hope and it looked better. I did get frustrated with how easily she tried to walk away from Theo in this book though. She spent so much time promising that she was going to love him and wait but then there were several times where Theo was a moron so she just started to give up. I did like that when she wasn't giving up, she was all over letting him feel his way through. She knew who he'd been and she could still see that, even if he couldn't. I did find myself laughing when she took off the kid gloves and just started pounding him when he needed it. I did like the fact that she was the one to take out McDonald in the end, even though I kind of wished there'd been a little more of a fight to it. But her comment about McDonald knowing who won was really kind of amazing too.
Theo! God, Theo Taggert! On the one hand, I got that he was dealing with stuff that wasn't easy. But literally everyone and their cousin was calling him on his crap and he still held onto his guilt until it was almost too late. I kind of hated how he didn't really try with TJ initially. Like, at first, I could see him going with the "the kid" thought process because while Erin had always been with him, he didn't have anything to connect him to TJ at the beginning. But even when he was considering something with Erin, he still refused to try and acknowledge TJ. I did like Nick's basically smacking him between the eyes with his conversation. And then when Robert came in and did it to. Of course, the pages may have gotten blurry for some reason (I think the onion ninjas were sneaking around my apartment) when Theo really held TJ for the first time, when he was realizing that TJ was seeing him as he was now, instead of who he'd been before McDonald. I also liked Ten's conversation with him before he and Erin left; he pointed out that yeah there'd been a bad call but he also pointed out the ripples from said call.
And Hutch! Oh, my Hutch! While everyone seemed to be wanting to believe, I still wondered. His disappearance in the last book was too easy. I will admit to being slightly surprised that it was Ian's idea; I'd kind of been thinking there was something with Ten and/or Fain going on instead. But I loved that Hutch seems to have had a small chance to kind of shine and prove to himself who he is. I loved how Ian embraced him when he asked to come home (those damn ninjas made another appearance at that point too...I think I have an infestation I need to find). I was a little surprised at the whole thing with Owen but given what happened, I was kind of glad that Erin was able to figure out how to forgive him. And I kind of want to see his story. I really want to see Robert's story though...he's clearly got a past of some kind and everyone seems to have their own theories. I'll admit that him finding family of some kind would be nice, but there's a part of me that kind of hopes he doesn't have like a wife and kids waiting for him. Not just because of his crush on Ariel (and I do want to see something come of that). I did like how much he cared for Theo and how he tried to help as best he could.
This isn't the most lighthearted book Ms. Blake has ever written, but it does have some comedic moments. Mostly, though, it's about Theo trying to adjust to his new normal, and letting go of his self-directed anger. It's about Erin learning to give Theo what he needs, when their whole relationship prior had revolved around Theo giving Erin what she needed. It's about how all couples change and grow, and the adjustments that need to be made so we don't lose our way. Granted, most of us don't have mad scientists trying to kidnap us and wipe our brains, but still...the story is relatable. Sometimes, tragedy helps us grow into the person we need to be in order to move forward.
My favorite scenes are when Erin gives up on trying to be the sympathetic, loving wife, and gets back to being real. And whenever another man touches Erin, or looks at her, and Theo's lizard brain kicks in, memory loss or no.
My very favorite scenes, though, are the ones in which Theo is asking his brothers if he had loved Erin. And cue the tears... Oh, so heartbreaking. As a reader, every time Theo asked this question, I remembered all the scenes in all the books that showed so eloquently how much he loved Erin.
Some of the story is told in the form of expanded scenes from earlier books. I loved seeing the whole picture of events that had been alluded to, but not expanded upon.
And Ian...I don't think I have ever, or will ever, LOVE a character as much as I do Ian. He tries to be such a tough guy, but with his family? Total mushball. Irritable, cranky, occasionally violent mushball, but mushball nonetheless. And he's so funny.
Bottom line - As a long time reader of the Masters and Mercenaries series, I could not have asked for a better payoff. If you are new to the series, don't start here. Start with The Dom Who Loved Me, and work your way through this remarkable extravaganza of love and family. M&M is one of the best series I have ever had the pleasure of immersing myself in. I would recommend to anyone who loves alpha males with marshmallow centers when it comes to their women. And lots of comedy. And terrific story arcs, with lots of action. And uber hawt sexy times. Just buy the series. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! If there's one thing that Lexi Blake can do very well, then it has to be the way she injects so much emotion into her characters that you just have to feel it, sympathise, and return it to them.
Although I felt very sorry for poor old Theo, I have to say that there were times that I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or (like Erin did) punch him in frustration! I couldn't help but coddle him a bit myself as he went through all the trauma of regaining his memory after it had been wiped by the evil Doctor Hope MacDonald as he often seemed like a lost little boy.
I found that this particular story was often a bit of a tear-jerker as they stumbled their way through Theo's new/old life (whichever way you want to look at it) and examined the flashbacks he had of the way things used to be.
I highly recommend the latest installment of the Masters and Mercenaries series, this is a "must-read" and you'd miss out if you didn't!
