When River is adopted by the James family at thirteen she not only gains parents, but a caring big brother in Oliver. Everett being Ollie’s best friend, he’s never too far and she forges a strong friendship with the boy too. He shows a protectiveness over her right away that got me swooning. He’s truly so sweet with her, knowing the harsh upbringing she had.
The story span over a decade where we see their relationship’s lines being blurred by new feelings. The fact Everett is in a relationship makes their romance forbidden and heartbreaking. It would be so easy for him to go for River, but Everett also has some trauma of the past making his decisions difficult to make. He’s definitely a man of his words and breaking a promise isn’t easy for him.
I cherished River and Everett’s romance! Their relationship evolving through the years into something so strikingly significant and powerful. It’s my favorite aspect of the story; their friendship that’s so effortless right from the start and can only turn into a love so potent.
As I previously said, I loved this book. The reason I didn’t rate it higher has something to do with the pacing and the fact some of the most pivotal scenes are only vaguely described. I wanted to feel River and Everett’s passion when they unleash their forbidden feelings for each other and I was left a little disappointed with the way it was brought.
Overall, the connection between River and Everett is what captivated me about this story. It’s utterly gorgeous, yet tragic. The prose is really beautiful and the supporting characters are so interesting and add another dimension to the book. Now, I’m more than excited about Ollie’s story, The Truth About Tomorrow. From the epilogues I know that one will be angsty and forbidden AF!!
River is thirteen years old when the story begins. A wonderful character to get to know, her pain was so deep, her vulnerability so raw. It was very easy to connect with River and get to know about her and the life she had led up to that moment.
Everett is the boy who captures her attention with his caring ways, his loyalty and friendship means everything to River but he was also so indecisive that at times he frustrated me beyond belief. Both have a story to tell, both have lost their way in life and are looking for the right path to follow. This story is told in duel perspective going back and forth in time, which helped to get to know each character to the fullest.
The subject matter in this book was very well written and although painful at times to read I did enjoy it very much. I also loved the way the author captured the family circle, how important it was and what a massive part it played in this story. There were many exceptional secondary characters which added to the joy of reading this book. Add in some angst, lots of secrets, and a smidgen of taboo and what you have here is a phenomenal story you won't want to miss. Just perfect !!!

River and Everett definitely did not make the best choices but sometimes people take what they think they deserve. Everett with staying in a relationship do to a promise and to make his parents proud of the man he became. After the pain and suffering River went through, becoming the person she finally feels she aloud to set free, and being in love with a man she could never have. Pushing all to reasonable thinking and taken over by the overwhelming need puts them in a position that changes everything.
Reading about Rivers past and what she went through is not something you take lightly. The strength and growth to being to trust again and open up shows how love and compassion can change the course of a persons life. Finding her voice and her passion for art leads her to a life she never even considered possible.
The pain that comes with losing both parents a such a young age, then both grandparents as a teenager, feels unbearable. Everett feeling stuck and accepting what he thinks he deserves leads to questionable choices, feelings of numbness, wishing for a different life and berating himself for the feelings he can’t control.
“Someone told me a long time ago that trust is like an eraser; it gets smaller and smaller until there’s nothing left. I don’t want it to disappear, so I don’t use it much.”
“Believe me, River, if I had you, I’d have all of you. There’s not one piece of skin that I wouldn’t see, touch, or kiss.”
“River James will always be mine, even if she doesn’t want to be. Even if she can’t be.”
“Everett Tucker doesn’t have to break my heart, because I broke it myself by loving him.”
“The truth about heartbreak is that there is no such thing. It’s your soul that shatters, along with every fiber of your being that screams for another person.”
What stood out to me most was how well crafted the characters are. Their is a good development curve for all of them especially River and Everett. And the best part is the even the secondary characters are handled very well and play an active role in pushing the story forward. Overall, i would prefer describing it as story of growing up and finding oneself more than a romance with touch of forbidden. I liked how delicately it handled River's past in the foster system and the focus on her new family - Robert and Bridgette and Oliver. The emphasis on family and friends was portrayed and beautiful, but where it faltered was in the 'love story'. I wish their love story was fleshed out as much as the individual characters and their backstories. With River i could still understand, but i couldn't quite grasp how and when Everett starred liking her. Except the both of them having a good understanding and respecting each other for their pasts, i didn't see much of their chemestry. Also I felt, the author was holding back from getting too much into the 'cheating' aspect and just grazed it. I would be more invested if she could dig deeper into it. Considering it's her first book, the hesitation is understandable. This book definitely wasn't boring. There was a lot happening but didn't drag out much and there was no over the top drama. I am definitely jumping into the next book ;)..
The emotional rollercoaster reading this book, one minute happy the next frustrated especially at him!!!!
I’ve been shouting at the book whilst reading it, ‘come on your stupid man’ was often shouted however he redeemed himself a lot phew!
Am now looking all her books up as she’s a author I’ve not read before, her ability to make you feel all the emotions is amazing a true talent.
The love River and Everett have for each other is soo beautiful and feels as though it’s an everlasting sort of love!! And Everett’s want and need to be there for River... ugh my heart ❤️❤️
The James’ are such a beautiful family and I’m so happy with how they treated River, how Ollie really took her in under his wing and became the best big brother ever! And how River called Robert and Bridgette, Mum and dad with such confidence.
The storyline is just so beautiful. A great read!

Spoilers ahead: I thought the writer sometimes wrote too much and went off on a tangent at times, and it did get boring. She attempted to perceive River as strong but vulnerable, and I felt that at times, she made her too weak. Everett's story could have been written better to give a better understanding of why he stayed with Isabel for so long...argh. A promise, really?! Steph was a small, comic relief to a rather intense and frustrating story.
