Here is a Great Upgrade to make for the drill.

Here is a Great Upgrade to make for the drill.
(I posted this on amazon.ca, and am pasting it here as well.)Latest edit is posted at https://www.amazon.ca/review/RV4SE89WQH1U3/ref=pe_1086170_134824320_cm_rv_eml_rv0_rvHere's the deal.Powerful, solid, but very unbalanced in the hand and awkward for these old hands. Two fingers end up on the trigger so that rules out using the middle finger properly for grip.I just bought it and regret not having tried the balance first in a store.I am devising a fix however, and will update this when done. It involves shaping and bending some vinyl sheet like from siding or trim, so that my middle finger will end up holding the body rather than than the trigger. (edit - The fix is superlative, will soon add pics.)So, a one inch by four inch (approx) piece is cut to about 1/2 wide where it wraps around the trigger to hold the middle finger, but allow the adjacent fingers to still do what they do, bent into a U/V-shape that fits over the trigger and I'll glue to the body, so the finger isn't on the trigger.Warm the vinyl over careful low heat or a hair dryer or soldering iron tip, not too hot. and fold it over 1/2 inch - 5/8 inch pipe or dowel to bend it to an approx. 30 degree angle.Shape it as necessary, (Dremel, snips, sandpaper, masking tape, knife, pencil ) and use some heat to soften an area and then pressure to shape it onto drill. Repeat till you get a decent fit, and let the glue fill the voids later. Elastic bands hold it in place while glue sets. Wet fingertip shapes heads onto oozed adhesive.Test fit with double sided tape, adjust and glue with polyurethane construction sealant, or your choice of plastic-friendly adhesive. Sand the vinyl where it gets glued to roughen it a bit.I let one side set up before doing the other, or get an extra pair of hands.(I ruled out small screws because there is electrical stuff underneath in that area. That would have been easier.)Only the index finger will be on the trigger when this is done. The middle finger will be holding the drill body even though it still held over the trigger. As it is the balance and grip of this fine drill is wrong.Think of it more as a two-handed drill.Oh, the drill had an unexpected bonus, it has a bubble level, horizontal and vertical, in the upper corner.I had not noticed that feature.I will soon post images, but my fix much improves the drill.DeWalt should sell a retrofit guard kit like this. They can contact me for the royalty set-up.Funny footnote. The drill I bought in Canada says:Made in the USA - From Global Materials - Up top here it says Made in China.Images are: A paper template that shows the final shape I ended up with. I am right-handed and the size of your fingers and grip will likely be somewhat different, and you may end up with a wider or narrower shape or different placement. You can always apply a little more heat for a better fit, but not to the drill itself, need I say.The blue dots on the template mark where I drilled 1/8 inch holes so the glue would push through and act like a rivet head. In hindsight 3/16 might be better. Perhaps a fourth hole on each side. The rest show various stages of the job and the final glued fix.A little bit of shaping was needed for the index finger and ring finger to clear the new vinyl piece while depressing the trigger. That accounts for the little dip on top and the rise on the bottom of the template. Final shaping can be done once the glue is solid. It can be perfectly comfortable.Btw, if and when I need to get inside the drill, I suspect it will be easy to detach the vinyl on one side. And more still. I have roughly calculated the slowest speed at about 100 RPM, and with this better grip it is easier to control speed right through the curve.I just tested all my drill bits to see what needs replacing and try the drill out. What I did, imho, makes the drill twice as good, and I give it 5 Stars with the upgrade.Pics below, but the latest edit at amazon.ca may have a few more details for those actually attempting this.
