Save your old chains people!
Bang for the buck I bet it will be hard to beat this tool. Yes, it is plastic. Yes, if you ham fist it while you operate it it will be a little inconsistent but just a little. We are cutting firewood here folks, not cutting a diamond. However, if you take just a bit of time and care while setting it up and operating it this thing will pay huge dividends in money and time saved.First off you do not have to permanently mount it. Grab a C clamp or Bar clamp and find a left hand corner spot to clamp it down on a stable bench. The left side of the base has enough clearance to allow this. The electric motor is smooth and delivers minimal vibration so it wont try to worm its way out from the clamp any time soon but do check it occasionally.Second thing to do is to figure out the degrees your particular chain needs to be ground at. I took a new chain and placed it in the guide then adjusted it till the grinding rock matched the angle of the cutting teeth. 21 degrees for the Stihl MS170 chain.Third thing to do is to adjust both the stops this tool has. Stop one is used to secure the chain horizontally so it doesn't move away from the grinding stone as you lower it into the teeth. The second stop is for how far down the stone is allowed to go into the chain. *NOTE* this needs to be adjusted when you swap from the left cutting teeth to the right cutting teeth. The last adjustment before you start grinding is the clamp adjustment on the chain itself. This is done with a lever that can be pulled out to dissengage the teeth so you can set the lever to where you just flip it back and forth to clamp and release the chain after you pull it into place and back it into the backstop. When grinding grab the free end of the chain and GENTLY pull it down to assure a consistent angle and grind. When grinding do not grind off much just grind enough to get most of the abraded metal on the teeth clean and after grinding all the teeth adjust it to grind off just a little more. This will keep it from getting too hot. After all of one side is done reset the angle for the opposite teeth and repeat the process. The cut pictured above is on an old stump that has partially dried out. I never had to adjust the bite on the saw and the cut, even made horizontally to the ground, is absolutely clean and straight. Prior to sharpening this chain was used to cut a tree stump below ground level because it had grown up through the fence we are replacing. Yeah, it was totally a goner before I put it on the sharpener.Just take your time, be consistent, and be gentle with it and it performs as it needs to. Great investment. What do I dislike about this tool? Probably the fact that now all my friends and family will be bringing me a box of old chains to repair. Ten dollar!!!! You hear me?!?! Ten dollar or go way! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever, Functional, Time Consuming
Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2012
I bought this because we have three different chain saws in the family and one has an odd, 13/64 round file requirement. One of the advantages of this sharpener is that it will sharpen any chain. This is a simple, clever device that works.

In the past I've used a Dremel chain saw sharpening attachment (Amazon) with round diamond chainsaw sharpening burrs (Amazon). It is faster, portable, removes less material and does not require removing the chain from the saw. After using this Buffalo ECSS, the Dremel system is still my first choice. Diamond burrs are good for three chain sharpenings, sometimes four. The Dremel system takes maybe 5 minutes, the Buffalo ECSS takes me about 40 minutes for a 20" bar chain.

As others have stated, the instructions are obscure but it's also intuitive and you'll figure it out. It does need to be mounted over the edge of something and there's a slight edge on the bottom so you know clearly where it goes. There aren't many ways to mount it, there are two 3/8" holes near the back for a 5/16" screw or bolt. I put a couple of brass threaded inserts in my work bench and use 5/16" hex head bolts with a flat and rubber washers.

All the chains I've used have a round cutting profile, sharpened with a round file or similar. This Buffalo ECSS sharpener creates a flat plane. If there's any difference in wood cutting, it isn't obvious. The design weakness of the Buffalo ECSS is the flexibility (slop) in the chain stop. The chain stop is easy to move 1/16th inch, more if you put any pressure on it. This means every link has to be carefully eyeballed and locked into position; very time consuming and it means on my bench I have to get on my knees with a flashlight to line up each link or there's a risk of taking off far more material than necessary, something that's easy to do and will shorten the chain life. The depth control is effective and only requires initial setup.

Again, this works, will sharpen any chain, but it's time consuming. Much cheaper than paying someone else.
