My house is approx. 1400 square feet, with the whole front of the house and hallway covered in brand new hardwoods. The bedrooms are carpeted, and the bathrooms are tiled. Our 7 year old Hoover died prematurely (in my opinion for something so expensive), and we needed something that was going to work on all of our floors -- not just the carpet.
What I love about it:
- Easy and fun to use. Once you get the hang of how all the parts work together, it's awesome! It propels itself across the floors without me having to shove it around. The Hoover we had was a bear to push.
- Super light. This has to be half of what our Hoover weighed. The only downside is that it cannot stand up on its own when the canister is attached at the top of the vaccuum, but it has a hook on the front for this reason -- and non-skid rubber backing so you can lean it against a wall while you're working.
- Great LED lighting. My parents used to have a vaccuum with a light on the front, which made it easier to see where it needed to go. This model has a light on the canister and on the front of the main brush roll unit. This really helps clean in low-light areas or areas that have a lot of shadows due to furniture. Even in my bathroom, which is well-lit, the LED made a huge difference in vaccuuming the cat hair out of the bathtub. (I don't know why he likes jumping in there, either.)
- Super long cord. Someone listed this as a con in their review, saying they would rather just move it to multiple outlets. I could not disagree more -- having the 30' cord means that I am able to vaccuum my living room, dining room, entry way, and kitchen while using just one outlet. I can do the hallway, guest bath, and two bedrooms with another. The master suite can all be done with one outlet as well. Plus, even when you have the canister on the hook at the front of the unit, you can still easily wind the cord on the cord hooks.
- Great accessories/peripherals. The motorized pet hair brush makes quick work of getting the cat hair off of our couch and chair. The upholstery tool even has the lint-catching material on it that they use to brush lint off of clothing. And the floor sweeper, with the washable microfiber pad, is a must for hard floors. Now I have to figure out what to do with all my dry swiffer pads.
- Great suction. It noticeably fluffed our area rug in the living room -- so much that even my husband noticed it. It also makes our 25 year old carpets look ... not new exactly, but like they've been maintained a lot better than they actually have. Plus it picks up all of the usual toddler messes: Cheerios, cracker crumbs, ground-in dirt... and it works great on my husband's woodshop debris that gets tracked all over the house.
- Edge to edge cleaning. Especially because the profile on the bottom of the unit is so low, I'm able to get right up into corners, along the baseboards, under the cabinets, and yes, I can even vaccuum under the free-standing bathroom vanity. Because it swivels (at least 90 degrees, haven't tried to get it to do more), I can even get around and behind the toilets. Plus, with the LED lighting, I can see whether I've picked up the dirt (I usually have!). One reviewer wrote that it kept bumping against her cabinet doors. Yes, it can do that if you're cleaning at a certain angle. However, because it swivels all around, I can just turn and get it from the other direction.
- Easy to remove and clean filters. I can easily pop out the filters to clean them, and agree with the recommendation that they be cleaned monthly.
- Great dust cup. I can't imagine having half the capacity by going down one model -- I feel like I'd have to empty it all the time. But this one is large and very easy to empty. I can either leave it on the unit and pop it open to empty it, or I can take it out of the unit and empty it. I've found occasions where it makes sense to do both, and I appreciate the flexibility. I won't say how fast it filled up the first time I used it, because I am embarrassed by how little my old vaccuum must have picked up, but I definitely needed to empty it a few times the first day I used it. Now, I can go for a lot longer before needing to empty it.
- Blade guides on the brush roll. Genius! My husband and I both have long hair, so it often gets caught up in brush rolls. However, it was super easy to open the door to get to the rolls, and then he just used his pocket knife to slice off the hair. No pulling it out of the roll and risking damage to the vaccuum.
- Less noisy than a conventional upright. My almost three-year-old daughter is startled by the sound of most vaccuums (along with other loud noises). While this one has a higher pitched "whine," it is not as loud as our old one. I can even get away with vaccuuming during nap time.
Cons:
- Does not stand on its own. As I mentioned above, the canister is the heaviest part, and it will topple over if left attached to the top of the unit. Even with the rubber on the back of the canister, I have had it tip over a few times.
- Microfiber pad for the sweeping unit gets dirt caught in it, and it doesn't necessarily come out in the wash. This is typical of this type of microfiber material, however.
- Assembly/disassembly. It can take a little while to get the hang of assembling everything each time (particularly because we don't want to install the hanger for wall hanging), since the canister needs to be stored on the hook near the base of the unit. Not that big a deal, just means that it's not quite "plug and play."
Overall, I am extremely satisfied. I have had it a month, and have already recommended it to some family members and friends. Especially if you have multiple floor types -- this saves me from having to switch all the time. It's awesome!
Okay, here is the real problem. I registered the unit with Shark. I called for warranty support. I described the issue, and the wand was determined to be the cause. However, Shark wanted me to pay for the part. It is NOT a normal wear and tear part. And this unit was not used for commercial purposes. In all cases, this should be covered 100%. After telling the representative, this is unacceptable, he pointed out that any Shark product not purchased directly from Shark is not covered!!!! What???? He did tell me that he would send a replacement wand at no charge as a one-time courtesy, but I would have to pay the shipping cost to send me the unit.
So the final conclusion is to not buy a Shark product through a third party re-seller or Shark will not honor their warranty!! This is the one of the main reasons I purchased this unit! A 5-year warranty is a huge selling feature, but no where on Amazon was this disclosed upfront and conspicuously! I am disappointed with the whole issue, and I would like to fore-warn any purchasers of this fact. I will be calling Amazon about this since I have just learned of this and see what they have to say.
I love the vacuum, but why in the world would a manufacturer not honor their own warranty if purchased through Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, etc...
UPDATE: Called Amazon, and they told me that they warrantied the product for 1 year. This is because of the fact they do resell the Shark products and the 5 year warranty is not honored by Shark due to this. So, the fact of the matter is if you want the 5 year warranty, you should purchase through Shark.
Pros:
Small movable head to get into tight places,
two speeds,
easy to clean canister,
long cord,
light weight.
Cons:
Small head makes it feel like you're doing twice the work,
two speeds though I don't really completely know when to use one over the other,
pain to clean the hair from the roller although they do have a nice groove in the roller itself making it easier to use scissors for cutting hair out,
my cord is already ruined - literally tangled to a point that I can't get the shape back (I'd probably advise against rolling the cord around the canister holding as that may have caused it).
Would I buy it again, probably. I do feel like it works well and is lightweight. It's really hard to find the "perfect" vacuum.
