Received exactly what I ordered. This is my second time ordering this product. It is good quality and tastes great. I wish they also sell unhulled barley.
I mainly use pearled barley in soups and stews. It adds a chewy wholesomeness, extra fiber and healthy amounts of niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and selenium. I just add 1/2 to 1 cup of barley to the boiling stock as I cook. It also makes a great side dish when seasoned and served as you would wild rice.
Arrowhead Mills pearled barley is a great value - I love that it comes in 6 28-oz bags. It works out to $1.57 per pound, and even less if you sign up for Subscribe & Save. I keep one bag in a kitchen canister for daily use, and store the others in a ziplock bag in my pantry (to protect against moisture and insects).
When I first received my order I was a little disappointed with the barley size, they all kind of small. But after I cooked it, the size actually doesn't matter. I ususlly make barley soup or mix with rice. It's good for making risotto too. When I cook it with rice, I take 3cups of rice, 1cup of barley and use water for cooking 4cups of rice, set my rice cooker for at least 2~3 hours timer. The taste is great and I love the texture of barley. My kids will eat this rice mix without complain. It gives you a lot more fiber compares with just eating rice. I keep my barley in freezer.
Fantastic product, great quality, not so many stones, other seeds, etc. in it. The taste is hard to explain if you have never tried it. It is sort of like rice, as it is easy to add flavor to barley. It does not have a very distinct flavor by itself, but in terms of texture it is kind of hard, very fiber-y.
I love that is it organic and is made with quality. Follow instructions for the best results. I would defiantly buy it again and would recommend to anyone.
This is nice barley, cooks up firm and plump and has a nice texture and flavor, and the price was very reasonable. It'll take us a while to get through all of it but having lots of it on hand is encouraging me to use more of it, as a substitute for rice or as an addition to dishes that I haven't added whole grains to before.
Amazon should require expiration date be posted in decription of product. I foodsaver vacuum packed freezed packed 4 of the 6 bags. The Arrowhead bags weren't air tight so the foodsaver drew the air out of the original bags, which might extend the grains usefulness. I was expecting it to last me at least a year.
I also purchased four bags of Bob's millett. I foodsavered two of those bags and the bags were so thick and tight that the foodsaver did not draw out any of the air in the bags themselves. The expiration date on those was August 2025.
