Kershaw Leek Knives
One of the most popular of Kershaw knife series, the Leek, has a slim, versatile, modified drop-point blade with good slicing capabilities. The high performing blade steels sharpen to a razor edge and hold the edge for a extended use. The three-inch blade is perfect for most tasks and the slim tip allows the knife to excel at piercing and detail work. SpeedSafe Assisted Opening allows for easy blade deployment with the use of a simple pull back on the ambidextrous flipper. The variety of colors are fade-resistant, scratch-resistant and permanently bonded to the anodized aluminum handle.

High-Performance SteelSandvik 14C28N steel is a high-performance steel with increased nitrogen in the formula for excellent corrosion resistance and hardness. The overall highest performing knife steel in the world that still maintains the productivity benefit of being fine-blankable, 14C28N steel is ideal for knife applications which place high demands on edge sharpness, edge stability and corrosion resistance. |
Attractive Blade FinishKershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect. |
Fast DeploymentUsing a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure. |
Convenient PocketclipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side. |

One-Handed FlipperKnives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection. |
Durable HandleStainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip. |
Secure Locking SystemKershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle. Designed to keep the blade inside the handle, the Kershaw Tip Lock system is featured on all Leek and Scallion SpeedSafe knives. This simple slider, when engaged, ensures the blade will not prematurely open if not in use. The Tip Lock system is located where the tip of the blade meets the handle scales in the closed position. A press of the thumb activates the Tip Lock for secure, safe knife use. |

The actual blade is very sharp and has a great edge. As mentioned by some other reviewers, the blade tapers to a very small point. If you plan to use the blade as a screwdriver or to pry something, it may damage the tip, but I have not tested it.
Probably my favorite thing about the knife is the SpeedSafe opening mechanism. This thing opens very quickly and smooth with one hand which is a great feature. No "wrist action" is needed, just a press of the index finger and you're ready to go. I have a Leatherman knife that I love, but the "blade launcher" requires a lot of wrist flick to actually get it to open fully. The safety slider is simply operated and good to have on a blade that opens with such velocity, especially if you plan to keep it in your pocket.
When the blade is opened, the locking mechanism is actually the frame/grip of the knife. This helps keep the blade very slim. The lock is very sturdy, but it doesn't seem to engage 100% unless you manually press it in. I don't think it is a performance problem at all, but it's worth noting. Perhaps it will once I use it often enough.
This is the first Kershaw knife that I have purchased. Its packaged with the manual in a small black and red Kershaw box which looks nice and clearly states "Made in the USA". Not some plain white box with a big made in china sticker.
I would definitely recommend this knife to anyone looking for a nice looking and reliable knife. It would also make a great gift. It looks, feels, and performs well.
This is my 5th Leek knife in 8 years. (TSA owns my first 4. DOH!). So it’s not a quality issue.
The stainless steel is softer than you may want for prying things, but I bent one once and easily straightened it in a vice.
Comes very sharp in the box. After a few uses just a couple swipes on a fine diamond stone bring it back to factory sharpness.
It will get light surface rust if you put it away wet, but the rust scrapes right off with a little thumbnail pressure.
Weight, size, and slender design make it comfortable and out of the way when in any pocket. (Verified by TSA agents always noticing it before I do.)
This being my 5th Leek, sometimes they arrive very hard to open or a little loose. A couple seconds with a torque driver will get the tightness action exactly as you want it. One tightening usually lasts a year or so.
I found the safety catch a little tedious for one-handed use, so I just tightened it in the permanently unlocked position. Haven’t had an unintentional opening so far.
I have large hands and they have never felt as though they were slipping on the handle.
It’s my go-to sailboat knife.
If you need a sharp, versatile, light, comfortable, and low maintenance knife for daily use you’ll be happy with this.
If you need to cut down a forest, pry open paint cans, or store it in the ocean floor, you won’t be happy.
The knife is a standard liner lock. I like the fact that the blade is very thin : it looks nice and works well. Don't pry stuff with it ! (I have a micro prybar keychain for that!)
The small sliding piece that is supposed to keep the blade closed is useless and difficult to slide back, and is made of plastic: it will get cut into over time, and seems pretty flimsy. It is removable easily though. The clip is reversible (tip up or tip down carry) but is always on the same side of the knife. It is good, but when reversed from the original position lets about 3/4" protrude from the pocket, I like "low riding" clips more.
The thumb studs, which are on both sides of the blade, are useless: too close to the knife, they do not provide enough leverage. The spring assist of the blade make them even dangerous to use as well : to open the blade using them requires a lot of force and the blade jumps open making your thumb land on the serrations...
Use the protruding "button" instead on the edge of the knife, it works perfectly and is faster and completely safe.
Overall, it is a small and well made (but well sized) knife, which is on the heavy side : it weighs heavier than a SOG Trident Tanto (which has a zytel handle but bigger thicker blade). Great for carrying in a pocket, as it is pretty thin. I like it !
