About this item
- BEST FOR: Ice traction cleats for winter hiking & backpacking, hunting, ice-trekking, ice fishing, and icy trail & road running. Designed to perform like snow chains for boots, the MICROspikes are ideal for use when safety is paramount; trusted by forest park rangers, EMS & first responders, firefighters, police, CHP & sheriffs, surveyors, and ski resort lift operators & snowmaking & snowplow teams. Shoe and boot ice grips for winter backcountry, sledding adventures, and everyday icy roadways.
- SPIKE DESIGN: 12 heat-treated stainless-steel corrosion resistant spikes per foot. 8 spikes at the forefoot, and 4 spikes at the heel ensure optimal traction that aggressively bites into icy terrain.
- ELASTOMER HARNESS & REINFORCED EYELETS: Using a patented eyelet design, tough TPU inserts reinforce key stress points, allowing the elastomer harness to be strong yet lightweight. Constructed from a durable TPE for a secure fit that remains stretchy in cold temperatures, down to -22°F (-30°C).
- ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Welded stainless steel chains provide grip and prevent snow buildup, while remaining flexible and highly packable. Pack size: 5 x 3 x 2 inches (30 in3). The integrated toe bail and tough TPU inserts prevent the toe from pushing through the stretchy elastomer harness.

Last year, 14 October, 2022, my fiancé and I hiked a mountain in Alaska named Donnelly Dome. It is 3,832 feet to summit. It defeated us at elevation 3,064. We were fully kitted out for the snow and cold with food and water. We thought we were prepared, but above that elevation everything turned to ice and rock. We didn’t know that at the time. Our footwear was evidently lacking because we just couldn’t safely make it up the rock face, and I assure you, we did try. Frustrated and defeated, we went home to Pennsylvania. 24 September, 2023 we returned with the identical kits and gear. The one and only difference is we both had on a pair of these microspikes/crampons. This year not only did we summit without a single issue, we did it in record time, with snow and ice above that very same elevation. 6/5 stars would recommend. I’ve since used these on five other hikes, two in alaska summiting another 4,100 feet, and 2,800 feet on the other. The ones here in Pa were only 1,590 and 1,450 feet, but these spikes made the hike easy. And I’m not joking. Downhill is my weakness, and these make it simple and save my legs. I will never hike without them again. Not to mention putting them on when needed and removing when not was ludicrously easy. I regret not buying them sooner. They are terrific in light snow/ice, gravel, hard/medium pack dirt, and light rocks. Not so great in snow deeper than 6 inches, and a bit slippy on actual rocks when your entire foot is contacting ONLY rock.
Sizing, the large was a teensy bit too small for my size 13 hiking boot and was making it curl up the the toe box, so had to upgrade to XL.
The only real downside that I now have is that I notice myself getting a wee bit over-confident with these fitted. So wearer, be wary of that.
In any event, these performed beyond expectations. I currently live in Boulder, CO where snow clearance on sidewalks and streets is shotty at best. At the time of this review it is 4 degrees Fahrenheit and there is a layer of frozen ice and slush covering 90% of the walkable surfaces (anecdotal observation). That is covered by 2 inches of fresh snow. If you're over the age of 50, want to break a hip and sue the city or a property owner...now's your chance.
I left for a semi-regular evening walk at about 9:00 pm (2100 for the sane amongst us). I walked almost exactly a block from my residence using my "slip proof" / "slip resistant" EMT boots and slipped constantly. I also henceforth slipped and fell on my a$$, literally. I have no interest in those figurative speakers.
So, I walked the block back home and got my ExoSpikes from my car (where I kept them should I wonder off the beaten path). As a note, I also have the less extreme ExoSpikes which are just tungsten nubs (which also worked well in a different scenario). But I digress. Have I mentioned the time I lept from a moving train in Boston? Sorry, not applicable.
Long story short, I put on this pair of ExoSpikes and had no issues whatsoever walking on the frozen surface of Hoth, or what I image it would like, to a bar, and back after several drinks. So maybe not the rocky icey hike the makers planned, but a normal's average Tuesday night down the sullied streets of Boulder, CO.
The sizing guide worked very well for these more "extreme" insulated boots. My other pair was fitted using the "non insulated" sizing guide and also fit well for my street shoes.
Oh, and as for the tile. It's not like you're going doff these at your destination, store them, and then don them again when you depart. So know this, the traction you achieve on ice and snow is reciprocal to the traction on wet bathroom tile.

Buying these from a company in America meant waiting 2 weeks for delivery which bore a German postmark but these were far cheaper than any other advertised site, came in the correct box with a Tote sack so well pleased with this purchase.
Used for fell walking in the Lake District when snow and ice are on the fells, no other item can match these, highly recommended.
